Entries must be postmarked by May 28.
Also, Kenny will be running the Washington State Supershuttlecock
Junior Badminton 2003 Summer Camp for kids ages 5-19 during July and
August, also in Bellevue. Details are also available on Kenny's web
site.
Hentley Liem alerts us that Seattle Badminton Club, which plays at
the Northwest Center gym, will be closed Sunday, May 4 due to the
Junior Badminton Tournament.
The 66th Annual Washington Open Closed Badminton Tournament is May
15-18 at the PRO Sports Club in Bellevue. Details are on the entry
form which is available in the files section of our Yahoo Group,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SeattleBadminton/files/. Entry forms
must be postmarked by Monday, May 5. See you there!
The Washington State Whole Health High School Championships
tournament is May 3-4 at the Northwest Center gym in Seattle.
Details are on the entry form which is available on the
Supershuttlecock web site,
http://www.students.washington.edu/kennylu. Entry forms must be
postmarked by Friday, April 25. Students in high school, middle
school, or elementary school may participate.
Daffodil tournament concluded successfully over the weekend, here
are some of the highlights:
- There are 77 entries, the most ever in the tournament history.
Due to the higher than anticipated turnouts, the downside is the
women single and double event had to be played on Saturday evening
and 1 21 points game in men's double event, since the gym hour was
pre-booked. The tournament director promised that he'll be prepared
next year and hope to see as many if not more turnouts.
- Annie Po came out of semi-retirement to win the women's single
event, hopefully she'll be inspired to play in more tournaments.
- Grace Qiu and Evelina Shin teamed up to win the women's double. A
lot of us probably missed some fun match to watch in women's events,
Marty and Kale teamed up and played mixed style, it probalby was
fun for Marty to take the man's role for a change.
- In men's single, Peter Collins got to revenge his semi-final loss
in Washington closed againt Kenny Lu. Peter played steady
throughtout the whole match after some initial jitter
in the first game. Peter came from behind to win the first game,
lost the second game and took the third game convincingly.
- In mixed final, we saw a rematch of Washington closed mixed fianl
between Marty Fagnon/Robbie Hankins and Grace Qiu/Kenny Lu. The
very experienced pair of Marty/Robbie again won the match in 2 games
and they had to come from behind to take the 2nd game.
- Experience again prevailed in men's double, Andrew Soo/Robbie
Hankins won the final against the young Kenny Lu/Peter Collins in 2
games.
- Clinton Chen teamed up with more manly (badminton playing wise)
Grace Qiu in men's double event and lost a hard fought B's final
against "instant replay I'll show you how I made the bird drop over
the net" Tony Lee and John Tong. Some of the men are inspired and
want to participate in women's events, well, you have one year to
work on the figure.
- Young and improved Eric Yu played well in the tournament even
though he lost the men's B final match to very tough Kevin Yu (not
related). It showed that hard work does pay off, keep it up, Eric.
- There are quite a few juniors participating in the tournament.
It's great to see more young players enjoy playing badminton, even
though some of the more mature players would hate to lose to
the younsters.
- Yes, age and maturity still count, David Jeschke won the men's C
single final match against very young Gary Stendsland in 3 games.
- It's always a good thing no major injury happened, Alice Fong did
hurt her angle chasing the bird in a mixed match, they had to
default the match even though Alice was ready to play after 10
minutes of rest. We also saw her partner Rayomnd of Vancouver BC
showed his gentle touch caring/counseling his partner during the
injury.
- Maybe it's age, Some players could not participate due to injury.
Geoff Stendsland will be off for another 2 months. Ufilya Davis
found out about her injury right before the tournament and
had to pull out of the tournament the day before the tournament.
She was so ready for the tournament. She'll be off for 4 months.
Andrew Soo had to withdraw his mixed event due to some mysterious
injury. Get well soon, everyone.
- For those who could not attend the social afterwards, you missed
the free gourmet pizzas and some great door prizes (thanks to local
Sei Adachi and other sponsors). The grand prize is a $130 racquet
won by Diana (one of Kenny Lu's students), now she'll not have
excuse not to practice hard.
- We also want to thank everyone helping out in the tournament.
They worked hard to make the tournament run smoothly, of course, the
food, who can forget the little gourmet sandwiches and
the devil eggs.
See everyone in the State Open next month.
Joe Moelders called to report that Open Women's Singles and Open
Women's Doubles have been rescheduled from Sunday to Saturday at 6pm
for the Tacoma Daffodil tournament this weekend. This is due to the
fact that they received more entries than expected for the
tournament. So if you are playing Women's Singles or Doubles you
need to show up on Saturday instead of Sunday. If you have any
questions call Joe at 253-272-9883.
Steve Ellis writes, "Highline will be closed the week of April 14
for spring break. We will resume play Monday, April 21, and with
the exception of Memorial Day, Monday May 26, will continue through
Thursday, June 19, when we will close for the summer. We expect to
re-open in the fall on Monday, Sept. 8."
Eric Lee and Kenny Lu are helping to organize a badminton camp in
Spokane this summer for kids ages 8-17. I've posted the
registration form with details in the files section,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SeattleBadminton/files/.
Badminton to return to "traditional" scoring
22/03/2003 : Badminton÷Õ scoring system is set to return to its
ø·raditional?system, following a vote at the International Badminton
Federation÷Õ Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), held in Eindhoven, the
Netherlands, earlier today.
The Badminton Association of England (BA of E) led the campaign for the EGM,
dissatisfied with the manner in which a decision to change the scoring
system was taken following the 2002 IBF Annual General Meeting last May.
The BA of E claimed that IBF Council did not act as directed by the AGM when
it chose a scoring system option that had not been proposed to the AGM, and
was concerned that the new scoring system (3 x 15 in men÷Õ singles and men÷Õ
doubles; 3 x 11 points in women÷Õ singles, women÷Õ doubles and mixed
doubles) was perceived as discriminatory to women.
Today at the EGM, which was chaired by IBF Vice-President Tom Bacher, the
delegates resolved that IBF Council had indeed not acted as the AGM
requested and so the scoring change made at the 2002 AGM was annulled.
There was a second proposal from the Badminton Association of England in
which they pushed for a change to a best of 5 games to 9 points system
across all events. However, the BA of E announced that, to ensure full
support for the future scoring system to be used, they would not press for a
vote, and their resolution then received no seconder.
Therefore the official badminton scoring system will revert to the
ø·raditional?system: namely best 3 x 15 in all events, except women÷Õ
singles, which will be played under a 3 x 11 format.
The new system will come into effect from 15 April 2003, with dispensation
on request to IBF being available to certain organisers to vary this date.

Clinton Chen writes,
Some of the tibits I collected for the WA closed:
- In Men's A double semi-final and final matches, experience
prevailed
again, Andrew Soo and Mike Kee first dispatched young Kenny Lu and
Peter
Collins in a 3-game match and then won another hard fought 3 game-
match
against Alim Santoso and Boris Poon. Despite all the golf playing
and
minimum badminton last several months, Andrew didn't miss a beat
and turned
on the turbo to put away last several points on the deciding third
game.
Maybe golf is a real sport, hmmn, Geoff should consider picking up
golf
(Geoff had to default Men's A single and double semi-finals due to
an
injury). Alim, you're not allowed to go back to Indonesia without
winning
the final, we'll miss you.
- We start seeing the changing of guards in Men's singles as the top
older
and mature players stop participating the events (injury or other
priority,
Dr. Soo, where are you ?). Kenny Lu first won the semi-final match
against
his double partner Peter and won against another young gun Yishan
Zhao in
the final, some of the rally seems to go on forever.
- New comer Grace Qiu took the first place in Women's single, her
first ever
win in single event. We do want to encourage more female
participants in
the event, otherwise we may have some male players dressed as woman
participating next year.
- It may be the first time in Seattle badminton history that two
brothers
play against each other in the final. We saw Curtis and Gary
Stensland
played their heart out in the Men's D single final, the younger
Curtis did
prevail. Move over, Serena and Venus.
- The lone representatives from Spokane, Eric Lee and Ted Horobowski
did
well in the Men's open and 35+ doubles, they are the C runner up in
both
events, lost to teams from Seattle with both matches going to 3
games.
Better luck, next time.
- The always animated Ricky Pesik (on the badminton court only)
provided the
most MANLY shouts/screams throughout the tournament, especially in
Men's B
double final, some of the screams did echo the whole gym, Ricky, you
animal.
But then, after a frustrated scream, he would calmly asked for the
score.
- In the "This Can't Be The Score" department, Mike Kee asked the
score in
the middle of 2nd game of men's double quarter-final, without
changing any
expression Kevin Yu answered 14/14 and ready to serve, you should've
seen
the astonished face on Mike Kee.
- President Hentley put in double duty in substituting two men's D
double
semi-final matches, it would've been interesting to see Hentley
playing in
both teams in the final had his team won both matches.
- The best supporting equipment to share or not goes to Clinton
Chen's knee
brace, John Tong borrowed the already soaking wet knee brace when he
sprained his knee in the men's B final match and later won the match
with
it. Just don't ask what the knee brace smells like afterwards.
The 54th Annual Tacoma Daffodil Badminton Invitational is Apr. 12-
13. Details are on the entry form which is available online,

be postmarked by Apr. 4.
Steve Ellis writes:
The 2003 Washington State Closed attracted its biggest turnout in
perhaps the past 25 years with 83 players participating. Overall, the
tournament seemed to run smoothly, and to the best of my knowledge, it
was completed without anyone suffering any serious injuries.
Certain individuals contributed significantly to the tournament's
success. First and foremost, once again, is the hard work of Hentley
and Alice Liem. Hentley reserved the gym, coordinated the medals and
t-shirt orders and delivered the snacks, much of which his wife, Alice,
prepared for tournament participants. It's easy to take for granted
everything they have done at the tournaments the past couple years
because they do it so well. Hentley also prepared the entry forms and
collected entries. Alice and Kale Fong helped him with the data entry.
Riley Bryce and Hentley handled registration, making sure everyone got
signed in and got their t-shirts. Jennie Chan once again did an
outstanding job designing the tournament logo for the t-shirts and
medals.
Li Qian did a great job handling the data entry for the draw sheets.
Rena Wong, with assistance from Carla Furukawa, made sure that play
stayed on schedule, an important consideration since we had to be out of
the gym at a certain time. On Saturday, Rena arrived 8:45 am and left
at 11 pm. The final men's 35 doubles match ended at about 10:59 pm with
the third game finishing with a 17-16 score.
For the Washington State Open, we are planning on about 160 entries,
easily the biggest tournament in this area in the past 25 years. We
will need considerable help. If you would like to volunteer to help
with setting up and taking down, registration and seeing that matches
start in a timely fashion, please let Hentley or me know.
The Open is scheduled for May 16-17-18 at the Pro Club (thanks, Annie
Poh!). We expect to have the entry forms out in the middle of April.
We hope to have five events in each of three age groups and expect
players from Alaska, British Columbia, Oregon and perhaps California.
Once again, thanks for supporting the 2003 Washington State Closed.

Steve Ellis alerts us to the following schedule adjustments for the
WA Closed tournament in Seattle this weekend:
There will be no matches at Seattle Badminton Club Thursday.
Mixed doubles Friday night will be played through semifinals.
All men's doubles players should be at the gym no later than 2:30.
If we start later than that then chances are good we will only play
doubles through quarterfinals Saturday.
Sunday's matches are tentatively scheduled and times will be posted
on the draw sheets at the tournament.
You should arrive at least 30 minutes before your match is scheduled
to start as we hope to run ahead of schedule.
If you would like more specific information about when your first
match is scheduled, contact Steve Ellis at steve0302@....
Also, Kenny Lu has put together a website for his Seattle-area
Supershuttlecock badminton coaching. The site is at
http://students.washington.edu/kennylu/. Check it out!
See you at the tournament!
Entries for the WA Closed tournament are due tomorrow! The entry
form is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SeattleBadminton/files/.
The postmark deadline is already passed so email
hentley.liem@... to make arrangements.
There will be no badminton at the SeaTac community center next
Saturday, Mar. 8, due to the tournament.
The 56th Annual Washington State Closed Badminton Tournament is Mar
6-9 at the Seattle Badminton Club gym. Details are on the entry
form which is available in the files section of our Yahoo Group,

must be postmarked by this coming Wednesday(!!!), Feb 26. See you
there!
Brian Tomisser, SeaTac Recreation Services Coordinator, writes:
As just an FYI, I wanted to let you know that the City of SeaTac will be
trying to expand our badminton to two nights a week. Starting February
19th, we will have Badminton on Wednesday and Thursdays at the North
SeaTac Park Community Center. This change will remain as long as the
numbers on Wednesday remain solid.
Steve Ellis writes:
The Highline Badminton Club will be closed Monday, Feb. 17, and
Thursday, Feb. 20, for mid-winter break.
Hentley Liem and I are hoping to secure sponsors to defray the cost
of the Open. If you know a business that would want to be mentioned
favorable on our entry form and t-shirt in exchange for a cash
donation, please contact us. The tournament is expected to attract
around 150 players, some from as far away as Alaska and Hawaii.

The Washington State Open has been rescheduled for May 16-18. The
change was necessary to secure the facility. It will be held at the
Pro Sports Club in Bellevue. An official announcement will come
later with datails and an entry form.
Many of you know Nami, a dedicated badminton player here in Seattle and
friend of the community. Marty Fagnan writes, "Unfortunately for us
Nami will be leaving, heading first to Boston and then to back to Japan
this Tuesday. So we're giving her a goodbye party after badminton at
NWC this Sunday (Feb. 2). It will be at Marty and Tim's house (2919 1st
North, Seattle 98109) anytime after 6:30. Feel free to bring a little
food or drink to share or not. Any questions call Marty (206/281-9051)
or Tony Lee. Hope to see you Sunday."
Ufilya Davis suggests that to solve the venue problem that the Open
tournament schedule matches for Friday and possibly even Thursday
evening. Steve Ellis splits the difference, wondering how Friday
afternoon matches would affect participation. If Friday afternoon
matches would prevent you from playing in the tournament, or if you have
any suggestions for solving the venue dilemma please email Steve
directly at Steve0302@.... Your input is needed. Thank you!

The WSBA faces a tremendous challenge this year in holding the Open
tournament. The Pro Club has decided it can't close the entire gym to
basketball during a badminton tournament so as a result that facility is
no longer available.
Right now the best alternative is probably two venues -- Northwest
Center and North SeaTac -- where one half of the draw would be played at
each facility with the finals probably held at Northwest Center on
Sunday.
If anyone knows of an affordable alternative, at least eight courts for
$1,500 or less, please contact Steve Ellis (206-323-6436) as soon as
possible. Keep in mind that many facilities require insurance
coverage. To secure tournament-only insurance coverage, USABadminton
must sanction the tournament and that means at least a $15 surcharge
per person.
Unless I hear otherwise, I'll proceed with the two-venue approach.
Also, the dates for the Closed are March 7-8-9 at Northwest Center and
for the Open, April 25-26-27.
Thanks for your support.

All the feedback indicates that the more than 100 participants in the
2002 BCD tournament December 14-15 at the Pro Club had a great time. I
certainly did because I had to do hardly anything thanks to the
contributions of so many others who deserve to be recognized:
Annie Poh and members of the Pro Club badminton club as well as the Pro
Club staff, especially Shawn Smith, in helping to set up and take down
all the necessary equipment. Also, Annie did a great drop on the draws.
Hentley Liem for securing the t-shirts and medals. He and his wife,
Alice, did another exceptional job on getting all the food together and
making all the sandwiches.
Hentley, with help from the Fong sisters, Kale and Alice, also put
together the spread sheet with all the entry information. Li Qian and
Hentley handled the registration, which appeared to go very smoothly.
Rena Wong, Annie and Carla Furukawa at the starter's desk kept things
rolling along in a timely manner.
Jennie Chan contributed her creativeness in designing the t-shirts and
medals.
On Sunday afternoon during men's doubles, Glenn Unruh, a veteran local
player, was accidentally struck in the face by his partner during a
hard-fought rally. Despite considerable bleeding, Glenn is doing fine
and expects to resume playing immediately. He suffered no fractures but
required 11 stitches. He wants to thank everyone who assisted him after
this accident.
Depending on the availability of the EBBC gym, the Washington State

On a separate note, players living in North King County and South
Snohomish County will be glad to know that the irrespressible Betty

Subject: Permanent badminton facility in Seattle
Dedicated local players are creating an association to build a permanent
badminton facility here in Seattle. They need your support, and have
asked me to pass along the following release.
----------
BADMINTON FACILITY ORGANIZERS SEEK FUNDS
Universal Badminton Association (UBA) intends to file as a
non-profit corporation with the State of Washington and is seeking
501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS.
The purpose of UBA is to promote badminton and develop players
of national and international stature. To accomplish this mission, UBA
requires a dedicated playing facility supported by the Greater Seattle
badminton community through memberships and unsecured loans.
The facility most likely will be built south of Seattle.
Initially, it will probably have eight courts, a viewing area, office
and small locker rooms. A later construction phase will include
lounge/meeting area, fitness area and snack bar/kitchen.
To accomplish its goal of constructing and operating such a
facility, UBA needs to raise at least $225,000 in addition to the
$275,000 already pledged.
At this time, UBA estimates that the majority of the pledges
will not need to be deposited until the middle of 2003. UBA expects to
open the facility by the third quarter of 2004. However, to go forward
with the design, planning and permit process, UBA needs your support in
pledges of at least $5,000 per pledge.
The repayment of these loans will be based on the membership
growth in the facility. Repayment will begin six months after the
facility starts operating at an interest rate and time schedule to be
determined before the pledge is deposited.
If UBA is unable to secure pledges of at least $100,000 between
now and September 1, then it will assume that insufficient interest
currently exists in the Seattle area for creation of such a facility.
Please let at least one of the UBA directors - Steve Ellis,
Geoff Stensland, Tony Lee, Hentley Liem or Clinton Chen-know if you can
pledge at least $5,000 to this project.

Thank you for supporting Seattle badminton!
Hello. I have been running the Seattle badminton email list since Kenny
Ngai left a year and a half ago. I wanted to move it to a Yahoo Group
for various reasons and discovered this group already existed. The
owner of this group, Kevin Yu, has generously permitted me to merge the
mailing list into this group.
Soon you will see Seattle-area badminton announcement emails that used
to come from badminton@... posted to this Yahoo Group
instead, and soon there will be a lot more members. However, the list
has been changed from unmoderated to moderated to keep messages to a
minimum.
Before I announce the change to the email list I will post a few
messages that were sent out recently to the mailing list so they are
available in this group's message archives.
See you at badminton!
