Hi everyone,
On behalf of Hentley Liem, who did so much behind the scenes to make the
67th annual Washington State Open the biggest and best tournament here in
Washington State in the past 30 years or more, I'd like to thank all the
people who contributed to the tournament's success. I don't want to list
names because I don't want to leave anyone out, but it was certainly a team
effort. I'm very pleased to have worked with all of you.
I'd also like to thank the 165 participants (about 20 more than each of the
past two years). For the most part, everyone was on time and fairly
attentive when I called matches. There were some exceptions, however, and I
know from time to time, I probably ruffled some feathers. Not all the draws
worked out as well as I would have liked. Several players did not play as
many matches as they should have.
Having run at least one tournament pretty much every year since 1991 (and
usually two or three), I've decided it's time to take a break. I just want
everyone to know that it's time for someone else to take responsibility for
making sure the tournaments are scheduled well enough in advance, that a
venue is secured and that a tournament committee is put in place with
specifically designated tasks. If these things are not done in a timely
manner, it's basically impossible to organize and conduct tournaments with
as many entrants as we recently have experienced. If you are at all
interested in seeing that the Washington State Badminton Association
continues to host tournaments, I urge you to contact WSBA President Geoff
Stensland.
Take care,
Steve Ellis
