Hi All,
I'm new to this group, so please excuse me if this question has been
asked before. I tried a search, but didn't find much.
Besides Kirk's Bikes, and Grand Bicycles, are there any other shops in
San Diego that cater to tandems? Does anyone know if Grand Bicycles
is still open?
I'm looking to purchase one of those independant pedal systems for
tandems, which allow the captain and/or stoker to pedal at different
RPMs. I need the type with the freewheeling chainrings, and the
synchronizing ring on the right side. This is for a personal project
I am building.
Thanks in advance for you help!
Vay
I recalled that one couple had a setup like that. They hung their tandem on
the hitch-mounted rear rack. They were cited by the cops because their bike
extended a foot on both sides. I understand that the legal limit is six
inches. You might check this out before committing to a hitch-mounted rear
rack.
I, myself, use a Thule tandem rack where the front bracket pivots. You
install the front fork on the bracket and it turns as you lift the rear end
of the bike on to the V-groove. However, we have a SUV which makes it
necessary to prop up the rear end by about foot so that the fork will reach
the bracket. But, I do not worry about being pulled over.
Also, even with single bikes, I have had problems with hills (think Laural
Street) and driveways with rather sharp bends that if a bike is too far out
on the hitch-mounted rear rack, the tire will hit the surface and literally
get lifted right off the rack!
And one more thing: Watch that exhaust!! There will be hot air coming out
of it. I've had a tire blown from heat expansion generated by the car's
exhaust.

On our 4-runner we use a hitch-mounted rear rack, as Chris suggested.
Swear by it.
On our Corrola, though, we use a regular ol' trunk mounted strap-on
rack, the kind that hooks onto the trunk hinge joint and under the
back bumper. Will your hatch back accept one of those racks? Ours
probably cost in the $40 range.
The bike does stick out past both sides of the car, even with the
front wheel/bars turned 90 degrees, but we just watch those side-view
mirrors and have not had any problems. As one might expect, it's a
little wobblier than with a single bike, but the balance point of our
bike is very near its center so it's not precariously unstable or
anything. It holds just fine on surface streets & freeways. We've
driven this setup to LA and back no problem. I personally might not
plan for it on bumpy gravel/dirt roads if it's that kind of camping
you plan, just because it might get to wiggling and the rack could
possibly do some cosmetic damage to the vehicle. Our rack is actually
pretty old and relatively wimpy, so a new unit might even dispel
those concerns. But like I said, for regular roads, can't beat the
price and minimal hassle.

Good morning Sarah,
I will be riding from San Luis Obispo to San Diego in April. Could you
tell me the best way to go from the bike trail (after Gilman Rd) to the

Affordable is the catch. A Yakima or Thule rack with extenders works
very well, but will cost about $500 including the tandem mount. It's
also not really removable. Otherwise, hitch mounted racks by Badger
work very well, though the GTI is not exactly the typical hitch mount
car.

Hey again tandem buddies,
My wife and I own a hatchback. (BTW: I recently promoted one of my
girlfriend captains to wife, and she promptly broke her
foot. ;-) :-( I forget whether I mentioned the wife development...)
On to the topic at hand: tandem racks! Our car is a cool little VW
GTI. We can fit our KHS Alite mtnbike in the car, with the back seat
folded down. That works for day trips. How about for camping? Has
anyone come up with an affordable, flexible rooftop rack solution for
a little hatchback?
When I ride with my other captains, they've got little SUVs, and
we've whipped-up good tandem racks bolting angle iron to the existing
roof racks. This GTI doesn't have any roof rack...
Thanks,
Fred
Hi all,
Ya, if you recall, I was the stoker with a new KHS Alite, running fat
Richie knobbies for offroad. The rear wheel seemed to come out of
true after each hard ride...
I took it back to Chuck at Pacific Coast Cycles, and he noticed that
the rear wheel wasn't dished properly. Since I bought the bike
through him, he fixed it for nothing, though it took a long time in
the truing stand. He blamed KHS, and partly himself for not
double-checking their work.
Since, the bike's been a dream. We pound through potholes, hammer up
rocky trails, and the fat knobby hasn't rubbed yet. It is kinda
frustrating that I had to take it in so frequently, but I am sure
glad that it is fixed.
We've been riding around Lake Hodges each weekend morning, more or
less. It's super fun, out there early, with almost no one
else. Chilly though! I'm glad I'm not the captain!
;-)

The following is from Kirk Newell. Please respond to him @ kirksbik@... cell: 760-390-1555
The Big Event is upon us. Below is an announcement from Kirk with the final details of the weekend.
Here's the latest info on the upcoming Borrego Blast Tandem Weekend, Jan 21 & 22 at the Borrego Springs Resort, www.borregospringsresort.com.
There are currently 33 teams from San Diego, L.A., and Yuma planning to attend the weekend! Other's are welcome to come at the last minute, but should inform me by email, kirksbik@..., particularly if you plan to attend Saturday's buffet lunch, so that I can inform the restaurant of how many to expect.
Both Saturday's and Sunday's ride are scheduled to roll off from the cul-de-sac in front of the Arches restaurant at the Borrego Springs Resort at 9 AM. Please plan to start assembling there by 8:30 AM to allow time for announcements, socializing, and photos (some cycling press expected). Saturdays ride is a 60 miler to the Salton Sea and back with just enough climbing (and subsequent downhill) to keep it interesting. As this is primarily an out and back route, teams can reverse direction at any time for a shorter ride distance. At mile 55 (and after 1 PM) there will be a soup, sandwich, salad & desert luncheon served for us at the Crosswinds Steakhouse at the Borrego Airport. This looks to be an enjoyable event, with quality fare and our complete run of the open restaurant & bar area, along with the upstairs observation deck. Cost of the luncheon is $15/person, payable at the door. This price is all inclusive, with only alcoholic beverages costing extra. Please support this event, as I have guaranteed the restaurant a 50 person minimum (which should be no problem with over 65 people doing the ride).
Saturday evening, the MASCOTS are organizing a happy hour/potluck which will be held outdoors at the Anza Borrego State Park Palm Canyon campground. There will also be a group campfire at this gathering.
FOR THE POT LUCK WE THOUGHT BECAUSE OF THE LATE HOUR OF THE LUNCH ON SATURDAY, WE WOULD DO AN APPETIZER POT LUCK ON SATURDAY EVENING. PLEASE BRING AN APPETIZER TO SHARE WITH THE GROUP AND A DRINK OF YOUR CHOICE. ALSO BRING A CAMPING CHAIR TO SIT AROUND THE FIRE RING.
Sunday's ride will be shorter (30 miles), but will climb 5 mile Yaqui Pass. This ride received rave reviews 2 years ago, as the subsequent long decent can truly be described as "E-ticket"!
For those arriving early on Friday and looking for something to do on Friday evening, the high quality local community theater is showing "Underpants" a comedy written by Steve Martin. Their web site is at www.bspac.us . Also, anyone wanting to do a spontaneous dinner Friday night, meet in front of the hotel at 6:00 and we will decide where to go for dinner.
Route slips, along with altitude profiles, will be made available online next week. This should be a great weekend! Trudie and I look forward to seeing and riding with all of you then.

This is a short note to give you an update on SDTC membership and corresponding SDCBC membership. First, for those sharp-eyed enough to notice, Sarah and I have moved the Tandem Club account from Union Bank to Western Financial Bank. Union Bank had sent us notice that they were changing the minimum balance requirements for non-profit organizations to $3000 for a charge free account, and it would cost the club a monthly charge of $7.95 just to keep the account open. Western Financial allows us to keep the account open with our customary $1000 minimum balance for free, saving the club nearly $100 per year in charges. They also have given us a deposit only debit card that permits us to make deposits at ATMs, which should allow us to keep the account more current by expanding the hours of access.
Second on the list is that the SDCBC has experienced in 2006 a increase to the mailing and printing charges for the ChainGuard paper newsletter to the point where our (and other $5 a year clubs) dues do not cover the costs of printing and posting them anymore. Tom Lettington has become the new SDCBC webmaster, and has placed all current and a few past year's ChainGuard's in Adobe PDF format available on the www.SDCBC.org website. A vote of the SDCBC board suggested that $5/year club members should receive the ChainGuard by default as an email "link" (the ChainGuard PDF file is not embedded in the email, but the web link to it is) when the paper printing goes out. Members may (temporarily) request that they receive a paper copy, but if enough SDTC members do request it we will need to become $10/year members and raise our dues to match. I have passed on the email addresses of all 20 SDTC teams that have renewed as of January 15, 2006. You may opt out by replying to the email notice for the ChainGuard if desired. The PDF file can be printed out and is identical to the paper copy that is mailed.
Along those lines, there are three sets of SDCBC letter mailings that go out annually - a notice that your membership in SDCBC is about to expire; a notice that your membership has just expired (and sometimes the collection that I do for SDTC membership crosses in the mail with some of the members that have already renewed, so we apologize to anyone that has had that experience), and a third letter thanking members for renewing, and requesting that if you are a $5 or $10 a year club member that you please consider an additional donation to expand the SDCBC bicycling advocacy activities. I'm proud to say that several SDTC members or teams have done so. These mailings go out every other month so that the SDCBC can get bulk mailing rates, but you will only receive a single copy of each type of notice, and only the Thank You notice if we get our renewals together in time.
Primarily in the past two years the additional income has permitted the SDCBC to focus on bicycle education, for cyclists, novices, law enforcement and other community groups to make cycling and interaction with cyclists safer for everyone. One consequence of this has been that the FREE Bike I education classes provided by the city of San Diego have been extended into 2006 through additional donations (they were originally slated as a test that was to end in August of last year). The city is considering financing another round in 2006 because of the clear success and perceived value and interest in the community from last year. I hope that you join me in the belief that this will grow and enhance the bicycling experience in San Diego county.

What rim are you using? On a mountain tandem a 36 hole Sun Rhyno Lite
is a good rim. If you are using good rims and spokes, then the fault
is likely your wheelbuilder.

"Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a
majority of the people." - Giordano Bruno
My husband and I have been riding a
Cannondale MT1000 for about 10 years. We are now looking for a "travel
tandem" [e.g. one that breaks down into a couple of suitcases] so that
we can take it on trips outside of the country. We mostly do bike
trails and road biking around our place. We ordinarily do about 20-30
miles a day, and bike about 4 days a week during the season.
We need your advice. We are looking at a
Co-Motion Cappuccino Co-Pilot and a da Vinci Joint Venture. Do any of
your members have any idea of which would be the better bike? Is it
worth while going titanium rather than steel (the breakdown bikes don't
come in aluminum). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It is such a specialty market, that you cannot really find good reviews
on the internet. If you could point us to some good reviews or
websites, I would also appreciate that help.
I bought a new KHS Alite mtnbike tandem last Spring. I seem to have to re-true the rear wheel after every mountainbike ride. Sometimes, we break spokes, so get new ones while the wheel is in the shop. Is this re-truing normal? Is it a byproduct of each spoke we replace?
This bike has 26" wheels, with 40-spoke rims. I'm the stoker, and weigh about 165-lbs, and my captains vary between lightweight hottie chicks and big burley guys: 110 - 300-lbs, respectilvely. The guys ride with me more, so we probably are pushing the bikes limits...
Also, we broke a new (as new as the bike) rear deraileur. Is this just a part of mountainbiking, or should Shimano cover this under warranty? (I think it was a Shimano XTS, which we replaced with an LX for now.)

The concept is simple and the experience is rewarding; matching up

new race tandem.
Thanks
Alan
And, are any of your guys going to Anza Borrego this January? We
expect about 22 tandems there.
Alan
I have a full race 28 pound Griffen Tandem for sale. The material
is called Boron Carbide Ceramic Metal Matrix and was used as bullet
proofing for the Apache Helicopter before being de-classified a number
of years ago. I have been riding Griffen singles and tandems for many
happy years. They are HUGE in the triathlon industry.
A few details about the bike: Dura Ace 9 speed, FSA Carbon
bar/stem/crank sets and stoker bars. Stand over height is 30 3/4 for
captain and 29 1/4 for stoker. I have full measurements for anyone that
is interested. The front is a 53/39/30 and rear is a 11/25.
NEW Eastern Circuit rims, new Rubino Pro Kevlar tires, new stoker
Butterfly seat, new captain Selle Italia Nitrox saddle and new chains
and cassette (a few rides only). This bike is a show piece and rides
like a single, very very responsive.
You can look at actual pictures of the bike at http://www.cashflowdeals.com/griffenbike.htm

This bike cost over $9,000 new and will sell for $4,700. I am located
in Southern Ca. and will ship. I am selling because I just purchased
another one with a larger compartment for the stoker and captain. Fell
free to e mail me off list for additional information.

We've had a good response from those planning to attend our ride and
party tomorrow. The weather gods, however, don't appear to be intirely
smiling on us, as the forcast calls for some cloudiness and a high of
only 63 degrees. Be sure to bring arm warmers, jackets, and maybe
tights. Hot soup and a warm house will be awaiting us after a brisk
ride. Those who have RSVP'd will recieve a route sheet via email.
See you tomorrow,
Trudie and Kirk
Trudie and Kirk would like to invite you to our house this Sunday for
our second annual holiday ride and party. The pre-ride of our 30 mile
Ramona Tour last Sunday morning was incredibly beautiful and
invigorating! We can only hope for similar crisp clear weather for
this Sunday. Meet at our place in Ramona (not the bikeshop, our
house) at 9 AM in preparation for a leasurly 9:30 roll off. There
will be an option at 20 miles to head back to the house, kick back on
the porch and wait for the return of those doing the final 10 miles
which includes a climb up Hwy 67 and a 40+ mph blast down Archie
Moore Rd. Once we're all back at the house, we'll heat up the soup
(choice of Kirk's homemade Turkey Vegetable or Vegetarian Vegetable),
enjoy some hors d'erve (nuts included!) and sit down to soup, salads,
and deserts. Bring an hors d'erve (can't find this stupid word in
spell check!), salad, or desert. We'll have bottled water, sodas,
beer, and wine available. Those gluttons for punishment amoung us can
turn on the Charger game! Please RSVP by email or leave a message on
the home phone (760-789-3994) so that we'll know how many to expect.
Route sheets will be posted in a day or two. Trudie and I hope to see
you all on Sunday!
Happy Holidays!!,
Kirk and Trudie
Directions: From Interstate 15 in Poway, take Scripps Poway Parkway
east to the light at Hwy 67. Turn left on 67 towards Ramona and
follow into the Ramona valley to the light at Dye Rd. Turn right on
Dye Rd. and follow it through a series of manditory 90 degree turns
as it becomes Ramona St. and then Warnock Rd. to the light at San
Vicente Rd. Turn left onto San Vicente and continue 1/4 mile over a
slight rise in the road. At the down-side of the rise, enter the
lefthand turn lane and make a left onto Creelman lane (dirt road).
Our house is the only one, a block down on the left. Drive through
the open gates on the left after you pass the house and park to your
right, nose up against the fence facing away from the house. We'll be
a-sittin' on the porch a-waitn' for ya!
Al and I are leading a ride from our house at 100 11th Street in Del Mar this coming Sunday. We plan to leave at 8:30 am and ride up the coast to the Oceanside marina. We could catch a light meal somewhere or coffee/tea and head back. Our plan is to be back in Del Mar no later than 2:00 as we have an afternoon committment.
As many of you know I had a titanium implant in my skull last July so have not been on a bike since late June. I plan to ride a bit before Sunday. So Al will be doing most of the work and we will be slower and catch more scenery.
Hope you can join us for this first ride in December. Our home phone number is 858/755-6564. And, FYI, it has been cold on the coast in the morning. Think about wearing holiday colors, antlers or jingle bells!!
