Thanks Gary,
Yep! If I lived closer to Kirk's, I'd buy through Kirksbikeshop. I've got a thing about supporting my local shop. I try to patronize Pacific Coast Cyclery. My family's been buying bikes, parts, and getting wheels made/fixed by Chuck for about 25-years. If my bike breaks, I like to be able to walk it to the shop! Having a warranty is another reason to buy new, but I feel bad that almost nothing on the bike is made in the USA. Maybe my next bike...
This KHS frame is a new design, meant for offroad. I believe this is the first year for this "Alight" tandem configuration.
With my ol' GT, we bent two rear axles, miscellaneous spokes, spun the rear crankset (that's mine), and bent up the handlebars, etc. This bike should've never been ridden offroad, but it was cheap, my first new tandem, and we rode it hard. It's time to be donated to a local disabled recreational riding club.

Rode one off road for 5 years Broke 2 frames, one at the rear dropout, one at the eccentric shell. The rear triangle is too restrictive for a tire of any size to be mounted (1.75 or so max). Ours was a large/ medium. Other than that we enjoyed it. We sold the last frame we built up to a friend and he is happy with it. KHS always replaced the frames N/C but it took a while (6-8 weeks) We bought ours from Quality Bike Sales in Clairmont. Talk to Xavier (the owner) I believe that a local dealer is essential when replacing the frame as he can interface with KHS and knows all the folks in the industry.

Subject: [SanDiegoTandem] 'O5 KHS Alight - any opinions?
Hey all!
Been riding the tar outta my old GT Sorrento. It feels almost rubbery,
compared to the other bikes my captains and I've tried: KHS chrome-moly,
and a Cannondale RT aluminium jobbie. I've not had good luck with the
classifieds.
I'm seriously considering ordering a KHS Alight tandem. www.mtbr.com/reviews/tandem/product_123734.shtml
It's an aluminium frame with a captain's top tube that angles down. A mtn
bike frame, that I'll mostly use with road tires. (We do go offroading,
and that may explain why my GT feels like a wet noodle, now.) I'll
probably swap the rigid forks for something with more give. Anyone have an
opinion? Anyone ridden this bike?
Some of you may recall that I'm the stoker, and ride with a variety of
captains. To handle my giant captains, we'll use a different handlebar
stem, and maybe a longer seatpost. For my smaller captains, we'll use a
stem that brings the bars back further.
Whaddyathink?
