After just completing a very successful eight day tandem trip to the Wine Country in Northern California with two other couples, Alan and I are already searching for a new place to explore. One of the best parts of exploring new territory is sharing the experience with friends. We figure that if we want to bike and explore, why not invite all our tandem friends to join us on the next adventure?
It's been suggested to us by a few friends who have had successful experiences on barges, that we investigate BARGE & BICYCLE tours which operate in Europe. After doing a bit of preliminary legwork, we've found a tour through Holland and Belgium. The tour departs Amsterdam on Sunday, the 11th of April, 2004 and finishes in Bruges, Belgium on Wednesday, April 21st. The tour winds through the Spring flower fields on the outskirts of Amsterdam before heading to Haarlem, Leiden, Delft, and Dordrecht in the Netherlands, then on to Antwerp, Ghent & Bruges in Belgium.
Daily rides average from 40-60 kilometers. Ride length still allows plenty of time for touring towns & villages along the way or mingling with the locals to feel the charm of the Netherlands. After the dinner meal, evenings are spent strolling through town enjoying the night life or on deck of your own private party boat. Or…. playing a rousing game of cribbage, hearts or dominos.
Non-cyclists are also welcome. If you choose not to ride, you'll have lots more time to tour each town. You can travel by foot or ride on deck at the barge meanders through the countryside.
The beauty of this tour is we can rent the entire barge making it our own private cruise ship, dinning car, & baggage carrier. The barge accommodates 10 couples (20 people) comfortably in double cabins with private bathrooms. Bicycles are usually provided, but since all of us have our own special tandems, we've negotiated a lower price based on everyone supplying their own bike.
The cost is APPROXIMATELY--$1165.00 for 11 days or about $100.00 per person per day.
We think this is a fabulous way to tour Holland and Belgium and the price is a remarkable value. Additionally, airfares in April are typically at their lowest as it is right before the height of the tourist season. If you might be interested in joining us in April of 2004, please let us know by July 15, 2003. This should be a fun way for a number of us to tour and cycle together.
