Hi everyone.
Here is a belated report on last Saturday's SDTC meeting and party. I
had meant to get it out sooner, but I've been inundated with work, which
of necessity took precedence.
About 20 people convened at SDTC headquarters for a
Cuban/Caribbean-themed planning party. The food, as usual, was superb
and diverse, with many people bringing Cuban or tropical dishes. (A
number of people also showed up in Hawaiian shirts, in honor of the theme.)
Tony Pietsch and Kerry Kunsman gave an update on the San Diego County
Bicycle Coalition. Tony is the club's representative, and Kerry is a
member-at-large of the SDCBC board.
The discussion then turned to the SDTC's annual rally. Dave and Betty
Johnson have once again agreed to host the lunch at their home
overlooking Mission Bay, and Dave had said either September 6 or 7 would
work for them. The consensus was that Sunday, September 7, was the more
desirable day because so many people have errands and other activities
planned for Saturdays, and the 7th would be the club's regular ride date
anyway.
Also related to the rally was a discussion about the traditional Point
Loma Ride. The Department of the Interior sent us a notice that the
entrance booth to the park is being moved so that after this year, we
will no longer be able to go down to the tidepools without paying. The
park is also going to start enforcing its entrance fee for cyclists, so
we won't be able to go to the old lighthouse without paying. The new
booth won't be done before our rally, though it will still be under
construction. The consensus was that we should retain the route this
year, rather than coming up with a new ride. Pat Fuge volunteered to
tweak the route and come up with a new route slip that has a more
desirable way of returning to Mission Bay.
Tony Pietsch, as treasurer, mentioned that the club has enough money in
the coffers to make the rally free to all club members. Nonmembers who
want to attend will be charged a nominal fee or can join the club for
$15 for the remainder of the year (including SDCBC membership). The
consensus was that we should retain last year's format, with the club
supplying drinks and choice of things to barbecue (tri-tip, chicken and
something for vegetarians—portobellos or veggie burgers) and attendees
providing potluck side dishes. To prevent last year's problem with the
long wait for the BBQ'd food and people demolishing the desserts ahead
of time, the club will also provide appetizers.
Several people would like to see the club have earlier ride starts.
After some discussion, it was agreed that the ride start time will be
set by the ride leader.
Following the ride planning, we all enjoyed—immensely—seeing Al and
Steve's photos of Cuba.
Here is the ride schedule for July 1 through October 31. Please note
that there are a couple of holes in the schedule. If you would be
willing to lead a ride on those days, please let me know. If no one
volunteers, there won't be a ride.
