FYI -- California Bicycle Coalition notice -- if this had been in place it's more likely that the SR-56 (Carmel Valley) bike route will get brought up to the original standards, among others.
Thanks,
Tony

URGENT ACTION NEEDED
Urge the Governor to sign AB 2971
On Friday, Aug. 28 the State Senate approved Assembly Bill 2971, CBC's bill to direct more federal funding to prevent bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities. The bill is now sits on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk, waiting for signature. Join CBC in urging the governor to sign this bill into law.
Sponsored by the California Bicycle Coalition, AB 2971 this bill would require Caltrans to establish guidance and criteria to ensure that the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians are addressed in the development of its safety programs by January 1, 2010. Read more about AB 2971.
Following the instructions below, please send a letter urging Gov. Schwarzenegger to sign AB 2971 into law.

How to write a support letter for AB 2971
1) Address your letter this way: The Honorable Arnold Schwarzenegger Governor, State of California California State Capitol Building Sacramento, CA 95814 Fax 916-558-3160
Re: Support: AB 2971 (DeSaulnier)
2) In your own words, briefly explain (2-3 sentences) your reasons for wanting the governor to sign AB 2971, possibly including one or both of the following points: - Now that more Californians are bicycling and walking for transportation, Caltrans has an even greater duty to make their safety a priority when allocating federal transportation safety funds and planning state highway projects. - Providing funding for projects that enable more Californians to travel safely by bicycle and on foot supports the governor's initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in California. If you have one, consider including a brief (1-2 sentences) personal anecdote about the need for safer conditions for bicycling or walking. 3) Close with your signature and printed full name, mailing address, city, state, zip, phone number (optional) and email address (optional). 4) Print your letter and deliver it by fax or mail (don't send it by email-it's unlikely to be read in that form). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
