Strenders,
I tried my first Strend in over a month (hamstring injury.) Put up some pretty
sorry numbers, but I'll do my best to get back into shape come Strend time.
Speaking of which, I went to the strend.com site just now and tried to sign up
but the old date, June 27th, is still there. Also, out of curiosity, how many
others have signed up at this point. Matt, could you let me know?
As for the rest of us, let's do it! Signing up will give our workouts even more
intensity.

Dennis, welcome to Strend!

It looks like 7/11 is the day. I will make sure I have the whole day off too so
I can help with setting up, etc. Gurjeet, it would be good to see you out there.
Matt, let us know how we can be of help.

As soon as the registration is up on the Strend site I'm signing up. It'll be
good to get a decent turnout-- both new faces (the 1-mile event should help) and
veterans (John it would be good to see you break another record for your
age-group!)

As for me, my hammy is just about recovered and I plan to do a leisurely mile
today. I'm curious to see how everybody is ramping up. It's less than six weeks
so the time is ripe for weighted pull-ups and track intervals!

Keep strending,Chris

Dennis,

Welcome to the STREND family! I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe the July
11th STREND will be held in Livermore (Matt or Chris please correct me if I am
wrong here). There will be a 'mini-STREND' option which replaces the 3 mile run
with a 1 mile run for those who have never competed in STREND before.

Also, this STREND will be a 'twilight' STREND, the first of its kind. It will be
held in the evening with some sort of get together to follow the competition.

Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. We'll do our best to get back to you
sooner next time!

Hope to see you in July,

-Gurjeet

Just curious, what is the status for the upcoming STREND (if there is one)? Are
we going to push through with the June date or postpone until July?

Either one works with me, but it would be nice to get a date on the schedule.

Just some advice from someone who had 18 months of continuous hamstring injuries
because I wouldn't let it heal. Save yourself longterm issues and let it heal. I
thought I could run through it and keep doing heavy squats. Stretch ice and
super light leg workouts finally helped me. Good luck with it!

Guys,

Well, as fate would have it, I pulled my hamstring yesterday while
sprinting. It's not too bad--I'm limping about and look pretty pathetic--but I
may beout for two weeks. Moving the Strend back a couple of weeks to the 11thof
July (and still having it as an evening Strend) would allow me more timeto
recover. Not only that, but I'll busy most of the 27th Sat. so I reallywant be
able to set up etc.
I hope nobody has already planned their schedule around the 27th. If thegang is
still flexible then I say let's do July 11th. Gurjeet? John Carmony?Others?

I sent the email below on the 14th, not sure why it did not post. I was
overuled by the captains, not much I can do about it. Chris if you have a
venue, perhaps Mark can bring the equipment down your way, I will be wiped out
after not only competing in 3 track races that day, but organizing and
coaching.

Only other alternative it to move it to the 11th 12th of July
Matt

The Bay Area Corporate games have been moved from the 13th to the 27th. BACAA
http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/1297/bacahome.html
The decision was made by the team captains yesterday.
My only nay vote could not win out, as I was hoping for the 20th.
This is job related, and an obligation as I am the captain for the Safeway
Track team. I get there at 8AM and by the time I get home exhausted it is 5PM.
There is no way I can compete or run two events in the same day. Chris if you
have a venue down your way, you guys can still stick to the 6/27 date, I won't
be able to compete but that is OK.
Rotten news for me, but not a whole lot I can do about it.

  Matt

Chris do you want to attempt to hold the event down your way on the 27th.

I will be tied up all day with a work related Bay area Corporate relays at Los
Gatos, It ends about 2pm, but the awards and pizza party, last until 4PM.  I am
the team captain for Safeway and simply have to be there.
So because of the last minute change from the 13th to the 27th I won't be able
to participate.  Mark Lundin has the equipment if you have a venue

Looks like our training regiments are much different. In training for the last
STREND, I would do a STREND-type workout 3 times a week. Typically Tues, Thurs,
Sun. We didn't always necessarily do a complete STREND though. We would start
off with a bench workout, 3-4 sets, heavy weight. Then go through the other four
disciplines. Normally we would do 2 'runs'. The first run through with the vest
and extra weight on the military and the second run through at body weight. You
think that is over-training? When you do a 'STREND', do you just go through the
complete circuit, all out or do sets, kinda like what I outlined above?

I generally hold back on the bench but I go all out on pull ups and chin ups. I
might play around with that and see how many dips I can add it I save up a
little extra. The vest we use is 20 lbs, how much weight do you strap on? Are
you going heavy with few reps or a moderate weight, keeping the rep count high?

Anyone else want to drop in their two cents on training thoughts? Wondering
where John Carmony, the ageless wonder is at this moment... =P

Dips have always been one of my stronger exercises but even then I've come along
way from the 48 dips I posted for the first strend. What I've mainly done since
then is to add weight. Also, I find that going down all the way when training
for dips makesit easier to knock out the Strend dips.
What's also important, I've found, is rest. I once made the mistake of not
resting enough in between training sessions. Now I wait at least five days
between dips. One last factor is the way I strend-- typically I leave a little
after each exercise and then give it my all for the dips.
We'll see how I fare this time round. I'd like to get bench and pull-ups all up
to the high 20's.I think with the use of the weight vest you should be able to
get your total reps up to 150.
Let me know how your next strend run-through goes.

       Chris,

Your numbers look great. 70 dips at the Elite level, WOW! I am hoping to get
my reps upwards of 150, and an increase in my dip numbers is going to be key for
that. I haven't been using the weight vest the past few months but will
definitely have to strap that puppy on as we start gearing up and doing more
'STREND-specific' training.

Any tips on what you've done to get your dip numbers so strong, is that just one
of your better exercises? I have learned a lot from Randall regarded form and
efficiency and that has helped my numbers a lot but I'm stuck in the low to mid
40's for reps. The pull ups and chin ups are by far my better exercises. I've
always struggled at the bench but I think I can muster up 15 reps if I can drop
my weight down to the 145 range...

How many participants do we have for this competition? I am trying to recruit
some of my buddies but if they compete it will probably be in the mini STREND.
What is is with people and their fear of running? =P

So I did a Strend run through at the gym. I brought my MirVest with me and
loadedit up to 21.5 and 29 pounds for chin-up/pull-ups and dips, respectively. I
felt pretty good on some of the exercises but a little weaker than usual on
pull-ups. I posted the following numbers:
24 Bench (at 165 pounds. I weighed in at 144.8 pounds.023 Pull-ups34 Military
Press (I used 85 pounds because they didn't have 1 pound increments.)20
Chin-ups70 Dips.
Total : 171.
I was feeling really good on dips and was watching my technique in the mirror,
part of the time, to make sure I bent my elbows to 90 degrees. I'm sure not all
of these were completely clean form so we will have to wait till Jun. 27th. If
I'm having a good day with the judges there I'll be happy if I hit 170.
The run was, well, the run didn't go so well. I'd been running six days in a row
and my legs just didn't have it. I decided to make it a half-strend and go only
1.5 miles (on the treadmill at 1.0 incline), which I did in 9 minutes flat.
Also, I think not having done many complete strends lately made the transition
from weights to running a little more difficult than I'm use to.
Anyways, I will continue posting my results for my Strend. I will try to get my
friend to videotape some trial runs as well.
Everyone, let me know how your training is going.
Keep strending!

A confirmation on the date would be awesome.

Randall and I did a run through on a whim this past Saturday morning. I put up
134 reps breaking down as:

Bench 10

Pull Ups 30

Military Press 24

Chin Ups 29

Bar Dips 41

My personal best is 137 and that was back in the beginning of February. I have
just started to run again on a regular basis, doing almost all of my running on
a treadmill these days. Legs just can't handle the pavement anymore. I'm
sitting right at about 152 right now but I'd be looking to shed down to about
145-147 range for the competition, helps out a lot in the run.

Chris let us know how your test run goes. Hopefully we can get a good group
together for June!

Well, I'm assuming its a go on 6/27. I will sign up this week and I've marked my
calendar. Just wanted to make sure this is the final verdict.
Training wise things are going well. I'm down to 145 and my running is getting
faster. It's been awhile since I've actually done a Strend run through but plan
to do one either tmrw. or Friday. Will let you guys know how it goes.
Gurjeet is right--it would definitely be good to keep posting our numbers and
pushing each other for the day of the competition. I would love to see some
records fall on Jun. 27th.
Keep Strending,Chris

June 27th is ok with me but my schedule is flexible as well. It would be
great to get a date set so we can map out our training schedules and set some
personal bests! I'm shooting for 8.0 in the open division. No elite for me
just yet!

Hi everyone. As for the Syracuse Strend. Its not going to have the elite
division I hear. I'm getting back into running. Currently at 19 30 for 3 miles.
Will definitely take time off that. I weigh 160 now. Did 20 dips with 100 lbs on
the weight belt. 25 MP with 95 lbs. Should get 30. 20 pullups with 25 lbs.
Shooting for 25. My bench sucks. Currently at 14 at 185lbs. Anyone want to
trade pecs? Ha ha. I will be in Syracuse july 100 percent!

Hey guys,
Just wanted to see if the Twilight Strend is still a go. I'm ready to start some
heavy training and would like to get myself back in shape for the event.
Did the Jun. 27th weekend still work?
Matt, let me know if I can help in any way.
How is everyone else's training going? Any PR's in pull-ups, bench, etc.?
Hope all is well in the Strend world,
Chris

Has the final ruling come down from the courts yet? Just curious when we should
be anticipating the next STREND out here in California? April or June?

I think this is a good idea; because Strends are relatively infrequent it's good
to make sure all those who participate can. At the same time, it depends on how
flexible the host is. If they are already booked up the other weeks then 6/27
it'll have to be. Personally, I could do almost any other week in the summer
except for 6/20 (wedding.)
Either way, I'm looking forward to a good day of competition and camaraderie.
Now I just have to get my run time down.

Hey everyone,

The twilight strend sounds like a wonderful idea, but I will be out of town June
27th. Was wondering what June 13th appeared possible or sometime in July or
August?

It would be great to get some feedback from other members for the proposed June
27th date or an alternative date.

Where will this STREND be? Will it be in SF or closer to LA?

I think this is a good idea; because Strends are relatively infrequent
it's good to make sure all those who participate can. At the same time, it
depends on how flexible the host is. If they are already booked up the other
weeks then 6/27 it'll have to be. Personally, I could do almost any other week
in the summer except for 6/20 (wedding.)

27th. Was wondering what June 13th appeared possible or sometime in July or
August?

It would be great to get some feedback from other members for the proposed June
27th date or an alternative date.

Yes it is on the STREND site future challenges, should have PDF and online reg
up first week of May.
clocked a 4:15.01 recently in a 1500, and in less then two weeks hoping for a
4:11 = toa 4:29 mile.  Running 16:30 in the 5K  so things are  looking
good.
Bench is moving up as  well, We have a bench press contest at work and I should
hit 245 at a BW of 143.  Did 115% of my weight the other day 23 times, so I
should be able to start off with 25 reps. Hoping for as many as 126 reps, but
really it is my run time, I am pretty sure i will come through no slower then
17:30.
Anyway a 7.2 is my goal in the Elite div

STREND ON!
Matt

Hey guys,
Just wanted to see if the Twilight Strend is still a go.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to see if the Twilight Strend is still a go. I'm ready to start some
heavy training and would like to get myself back in shape for the event.
Did the Jun. 27th weekend still work?
Matt, let me know if I can help in any way.
How is everyone else's training going? Any PR's in pull-ups, bench, etc.?
Hope all is well in the Strend world,
Chris

Sorry guys, things are a bit hectic as of late.  Spring won't work.

How about June 27?   I was actually thnking about a PM STREND - twilight
6PM-8:30PM with a late celebratory dinner and beers to follow.

Has the final ruling come down from the courts yet? Just curious when we should
be anticipating the next STREND out here in California? April or June?

With the continued growth of Facebook as an online networking site,
I have created a group for us STRENDers. If any of you guys are on Facebook,
look it up, it's an open group so anyone can join or invite others to join.

Just thought it would be a good way to get the word out about this fun, intense
sport. Besides, more competitors is always a good thing... right?
