Welcome to STREND, Gene. We are a small but inspired group.
I started training for STREND about 10 years ago at age 48 and still love it
although the years are slowing me down.
Now I am into the maintenance phase of life-just trying to avoid injury so I can
keep playing with the "kids".
Hope to see you at the next STREND!

Hi to all STREND people! My name is Gene and have recently joined. I am a
chemist by trade and have been into physical fitness ever since my days in the
U.S.M.C. I was interested in taking my fitness to the next level and a friend
told me about you. I will be hitting the big "50" this Feb. and have been really
been serious about training. From what I have read, this is exactly what I'm
looking for! Hope to compete/meet some of you soon! Gene

I will check up with Mark later this week on the April STREND on Treasure
Island.
The sooner a date is nailed down the better, so we can promote and encourage
registration and participation.
Good job on the pull ups.  Intervals are never really fun, but necessary.Â
Today I did 7 x 880 in an average of 2:30 with 1:40 rests. I am just about in
16:30 5K shape so fall road racing is looking good. I'll test myself on
Saturday, afater one more bout of long interval training on Wednesday, including
two 2400 meters at 5K pace and then 2 quick 1,000's with short recovery.

Welcome onboard, Eugene (and David.) I am always inspired when someone takes up
Strend who is older than I am. (At 34 I suppose that doesn't make me too old.) I
really believe a Strend a week is the fountain of youth.
Speaking of which I've sort of fallen out of the fitness loop. I was just
married last month so I need to get back on track. Knowing a Strend competition
is looming in the horizon will really get me hitting those dreaded track
intervals. How is the April Strend looking Matt? Would be good to have some new
recruits! So hope to see Eugene and David as well as some veterans out there.
Keep Strending,ChrisÂ
P.S.- I did 50 pull-ups in 7:30 minutes wearing a 40-pound weight vest last week
(I guess there is fitness after marriage.)

I was wondering what the divisions are for STREND competitions. Some results
from local events vary. (ie) Masters division says 50 yo + on STREND web page,
yet some competitions say 40 yo + ? Also, I assume you have to qualify for the
larger events like the world championships via local events. Thanx! Gene

Chriss hit it on the head! i think my training will be much more intense as an
event looms on the horizon. Has anything been firmed up for April Yet? In the
context of the message from a little over a week ago,I kinda took the idea of an
event in the San Fran area as a thought not yet evolved into a reality as of
yet.
hope all is well with all

Hi Gene.
Best way to train, I think, is to do lots of STREND practice runs. Your muscles
need to get use to the reps and the 3 minute time constraints. After you have
done it a while, it seems like the only way to train. And you can easily
measure your improvement, which if you stick with it, will be dramatic. There
is something about the 3 minute cycle that really makes you very strong.
You are in luck being in RI. Dan Ganley and Son put on a STREND in Syracuse
each summer. Just up the road for you! It is a great time with good volunteers
and equipment. I highly recommend you talk to Dan and put it on your schedule.

Greetings David.
A little aged? 41 is the zenith, that decade is a perfect blend of overall
fitness, experience, conditioning and wisdom. I will be 41 in December and have
never felt stronger.
I am a runner first and foremost preferring 800-5000 and more track then road.
There is a STREND in the works for April possibly in the SF Area.
Welcome
Matt

turned to the gym because i didnt like being to thin from that type of
trainning. Well the message i got was to do a brief intro. Im wondering if this
is enough briefness.

27 reps at the end is amazing! With 90 second breaks? You should be able to
get 40 reps on bench!
Yes, I will try the weighted pull ups tonight. My weighted chain belt is 2lbs,
so (47, 32, 17, and bodyweight- all with 90 seconds rest) Should be
interesting.
Today's interval workout; warm-up and strides: 5x 500 (basically a full lap
and a 100 straightaway) 1:23(fastest) to 1:28 the slowest Average was 2 full
seconds over 1:25(avg)so 1:25.4 If you are wondering what type of Mile race
pace that is: 4:33 mile.
So with the slow 300 jog in between it was fairly tough. Followed up with 5 x
200
32 down to 29 seconds, diagonal walk jog across field back to start.

So I tried the bench work out. I didn't have a spotter so I wasn't able
to go to failure but I posted some pretty decent numbers. I weigh
147 so I'm a little above competition weight, which I'd peg at about
145. My numbers are as follows:
205-- 10 reps
185--10 reps
165--15 reps
145--27 reps
I'd like to try it to failure so I can try pumping out more in the first set
and maybe go for 15 at 185.
I'm going to try a variant on weighted pull-ups and see how it works
out. Maybe do +50--30--20- - free. For now, I got to get my running
back to where it was earlier this year. Time for those track intervals :(.

Bench prep. workout.
200 175 155 140 90 second rests between sets. Sets to failure.
You could use whatever weights best suit you, I just used 140% of my weight as
the first set and then went from there, basically down to the weight I would use
in an open STREND if I weighed in at 142 (140)
I did 10/15/15/15 really had to dig for that final set.
A few weeks back 23 reps for 115% of my weight, so I am pretty sure I could hit
35-36 reps of bodyweight.
Anyway, to tone this workout out down, just try 3 sets at first, maybe 10lbs
over your weight, then your bodyweight, then 10lbs under.
Women: 70% of BW 1st set, 60% 2nd set and 50% for a third and final set.

Hey everyone,
I have begun my countdown... Really looking forward to this weekend. Who will be
attending?
Chris - I don't have a video camera but some of my friends will probably be
coming to watch, so if you can get your hands on a camcorder, I have some able
bodies who will be able to tape.
Matt - Do you need any help setting up for the event? I'm commuting from
Sacramento but I could come out early if you need an extra hand with anything.

So I'm not really sure what is going on for this weekend. It sounds like there
are too few people to carry this event through, and Matt, who was involved in
the logistics, is not going to be able to make it. If the event still goes off,
I'll definitely be there.
But despair not. I'm working with Matt on giving Strend a face-lift. The next
event will be something on a far bigger scale. Stay tuned!

Hi Matt and all the other STRENDISTS,
Good luck this weekend to all. I will not be coming out. I have been fighting
a shoulder problem for several months and my training has suffered greatly from
it. Not sure if it is the lifting, the pole vaulting, or just old age that is
catching up with me, but whatever it is, it has sure played heck with my STREND
training and in particular my dips. My long term goal is to let this recover and
get and stay healthy, and then try hard at age 60 to do a regulation STREND and
give you guys a good record to shoot for.
Be sure to post the results.
I have a spreadsheet that lists the top 10 STREND performances in the various
age groups. Once you guys get done, I will update the list and send it out to
all.
STREND ON!

Matt,
Thanks for putting that up there. I'm mailing my check tomorrow.
For the rest of us-- Does anybody have a video camera? I'll bring my digicam
but it would be good to get some footage that we could later post on youtube.com
oreven the strend site (that is, with a link to youtube or other video sites.
Matt you've used a few different ones.)
Anyways, can't wait. See you all soon!

Guys,
I just tried to sign up on the strend.com site, but the link to allsport.com
doesn't seem to be working. I definitely want to sign up soon and get the ball
rolling. I know we've switched dates on many of you so I just hope this works
all right so we can all get involved soon.
Also, we should try recruiting people we know this time around. With only a
1-mile run there shouldn't be too many grumbling how they don't like running. I
have a few friends I'm trying to inspire so hopefully they'll come around.

Chris,
Haven't signed up yet but will definitely be out there. Just finished up finals
and have graduation this weekend. Fighting off a cold but ready to push the
workouts to the next level and hopefully set some PR's over the next few weeks.
Good to hear that your training is back on track. Looking forward to next month!

Strenders,
I tried my first Strend in over a month (hamstring injury.) Put up some pretty
sorry numbers, but I'll do my best to get back into shape come Strend time.
Speaking of which, I went to the strend.com site just now and tried to sign up
but the old date, June 27th, is still there. Also, out of curiosity, how many
others have signed up at this point. Matt, could you let me know?
As for the rest of us, let's do it! Signing up will give our workouts even more
intensity.

Dennis, welcome to Strend!
It looks like 7/11 is the day. I will make sure I have the whole day off too so
I can help with setting up, etc. Gurjeet, it would be good to see you out there.
Matt, let us know how we can be of help.
As soon as the registration is up on the Strend site I'm signing up. It'll be
good to get a decent turnout-- both new faces (the 1-mile event should help) and
veterans (John it would be good to see you break another record for your
age-group!)
As for me, my hammy is just about recovered and I plan to do a leisurely mile
today. I'm curious to see how everybody is ramping up. It's less than six weeks
so the time is ripe for weighted pull-ups and track intervals!
Keep strending,Chris

Dennis,
Welcome to the STREND family! I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe the July
11th STREND will be held in Livermore (Matt or Chris please correct me if I am
wrong here). There will be a 'mini-STREND' option which replaces the 3 mile run
with a 1 mile run for those who have never competed in STREND before.
Also, this STREND will be a 'twilight' STREND, the first of its kind. It will be
held in the evening with some sort of get together to follow the competition.
Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. We'll do our best to get back to you
sooner next time!
Hope to see you in July,
-Gurjeet
