Trying this again. A few things I needed to cover.
1. We need a school to host part of the SLUJ invite on Saturday, April
18th. It would be set if it was near desmet. We need two fields all
day on saturday.
2. It looks like will have to go with the original schedule. If I
could get teams that want to, or are willing to, start later to email
me, I could schedule themb against each other week 1 and they could
reschedule.
3. For those teams that are close on a jv team, would any of you be
willing to field a team for a mini jv league that plays on a different
day. They would play less games, the players could still come to your
vasity gamas on sunday, and you could get your younger players some
game time. Thoughts?
4. Paperwok is due at the meeting on the 24th. Discs and rule books
will be handed out at the meeting.
Let me know if you have any questions.

CBC is expecting about 20 players again this year. NO JV team but the games vs JV teams may be the most fun. We lost every game last year if you do not count the spirit game vs Kirkwood sunday at the state Tourney (5-4). I hate to loose every game and like the idea of A & B divisions. I still plan to play Desmet and SLUH regardless of the final score. We can set up a game on a weekday outside of the regular schedule. BTW it is not running up the score to beat a team 15-1...it takes 15 points to win. Thx, Matt Reardon

Reserving Buder for the Tournament is not an easy thing to change. SInce Dana did that back in November, we were able to get the entire park. In years past, when we reserve later, we have to share the park and give up certain fields to soccer and softball and RC aircraft. This weekend is the same as least year, but a week later than prior years which lends to slightly better weather. These schools all have proms, graduations, exams, spring breaks, etc. at different times, so scheduling around any one school's calendar is difficult.
Not sure that we have to tie the HS tournament to the league schedule. I see them as 2 different events since the season might extend past the first weekend in May. So, the starting of the season need not have a bearing on the tournament weekend, other than we skip the May 2 & 3 dates for regular league play.
Please remind me of the date and time of the captain's meeting. Will it be at Buffalo Wild Wings, again?
Thanks,
Buck

Buck will have to chime in here. I am not sure about the ability to move the tourney at this point. Dana indicated that they have reserved buder allready. I am still trying to find another venue, but that looks unlikely. One week wouldn't be terrible, but it does gaurantee that someone will have prom (probably a few) it may mean one less game, if we were to do it. I am really torn here. It seems like a gooid idea, but it also may mean some ewxtra work at this point, and it may really hurt some teams participation at the end.

For Parkway North, I do not foresee a JV team ... that is, we will be
filling just ONE team -- most likely with a freaky mix of equal
numbers of seniors and freshmen, with little in between.
I also have mixed feelings about the A & B division issue -- no clear
preference either way.
Chris / PNH
Not sure, but I think that if a certain date is not good for your team, with a little planning, the game can be rescheduled. Seems that most teams were pretty flexible last year.

I am NOT sympathetic to starting a week later or moving the tournament. Fewer games, but here's the real consideration. We used to start a little later, but there were always a ton of complaints from teams whose graduations were near or even before the end of the season. That's WHY we start earlier now.
I understand Pete's point about Desmet's official sports calendar, but the truth is, Desmet is the only team in the league that's subject to those types of rules, and so I think this will need to be one case in which the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
Bottom line: starting later was tried, failed, we adapted, and even though that means tough weather at the start of the season, at least it's a common factor to each team. I don't want to give up games. All teams get a cold start--so to speak. It's fair.
Just my arguments . . . not meant to be the final word.

Buck will have to chime in here. I am not sure about the ability to
move the tourney at this point. Dana indicated that they have reserved
buder allready. I am still trying to find another venue, but that
looks unlikely. One week wouldn't be terrible, but it does gaurantee
that someone will have prom (probably a few) it may mean one less
game, if we were to do it. I am really torn here. It seems like a
gooid idea, but it also may mean some ewxtra work at this point, and
it may really hurt some teams participation at the end.

I certainly agree with Chris' and Eric's point about the value of having developing players play more advanced teams. Until developing players/teams see the game played in a more beautiful way, ultimate lacks luster for players still working on basic skills.

SLUH is on the fence with JV. Last year we had 31 or 32 guys sign up
and pay dues, so we did two teams, but struggled to field a JV team
some weeks. This ended up being a waste of my committed players time
as well as the teams that were scheduled to play us. However, we will
not make the decision until we see how many of the 45 currently
interested actually end up playing.
As far as strength divisions, I am against it. I think within
regional divisions everyone will play stronger and weaker teams.
While there will be games that are lopsided, there will also be
competitive games for every team. I also believe that less
experienced players have more to gain by playing a mix of teams.

Hmm. I floated this idea to Chris earlier, but you both make some good points. All things considered, I think the best step to build programs and give developing players competitive games is to push for a 4 team JV division.
And what might that look like? Would those 4 only play each other multiple times during the league? Or would there be a way to get them a few games against varsity teams while ensuring that the JVs all played each other?
All of which might be moot depending on how many JVs there are out there . . . I was most hopeful for Desmet, Priory, CBC, Howell Central, and maybe Clayton.

I dont think we will have JV either. We tend to lose players by the 3 or 4th week. But you never know. It is still too early to tell how many will come out. Either way I like Bucks suggestion. Jack

Jason,
No JV for Kirkwood.
Rather than North and South divisions, one thought is to have JV teams and weaker, new-to-the-league teams play in a B-Flight division while the competitive teams play in the A-Flight. At Kirkwood, we have a few women and a lot of newer players that would get smoked by DeSmet's varsity squad--a waste of time for both teams.
I think the coaches and players know which flight they should be in, based on last year's results and what players graduated. I'd rather have 8 close games than 4 blow-outs.

I am sure the Clayton team would welcome her. We need more
women. Having an experienced female player on the team, may give some of our
inexperienced women the confidence to play.

I checked on fields for the invite. We can use our fields, but we'll probably only have 3 fields for most of Saturday. Additionally, I need to walk off our fields b/c I think we'd be looking at narrower fields. I'll try to do this later today. We would have access to our turf field on Sunday.
Also, have we set a date for the Missouri state tournament. I'm trying to line up out of town tournaments for our guys.
Looking forward to another great year. Hope things have been good with you.
Thanks,
Peter

I'm looking at February 23rd. I also should have mentioned that we
were shooting for a March 8th start date.

Get ready for another season of SLUJ. We are still growing, adding
more events and teams. I expect we will have two more teams this year
(that would make 16), we are having a hat draw tournament (SLUJ
Bucket-3/21), and hosting a tournament (SLUJ Invite-4/18-4/19). As
soon as you read this, go put your contact info into the 09 contacts
database. Not entering your info forces us to call you repeatedly and
worry whether you've got it together. We have updated the "files"
folder to include all updated necessary files. The UPA fee remains
$20 per player and covers all upa events for the year. The league fee
remains at $10 per player and includes a disc and the SLUJ Bucket
tourney.
Any questions? Post it here. Need to call me? Chris Martens 636-634-6476
