Whenever you're ready, enter your contact information for the 2009
season in the new database (even if it's the same as last year).

A little early, I know . . . but teams who intend to participate in the
Spring League should probably already be recruiting and such . . . I'm
just getting a little amped about it all, so I wanted to start the ball
rolling . . .

Jason.

We are still trying to figure out our practice schedule. We are going to play one night a week. Right now it looks like it will either be Tuesdays or Thursdays. Our first tournament will be June 28-29 in Tulsa. If things go well, then we will sign up for more. Send me you availability for practices, and I will add you to my mailing list.

Mr. Weiss,

My name is Nic Herrmann and I played for DeSmet last season.  I know this is really late but for whatever reason I accidentally looked over this email initially.  If you are not already full and practicing,  I would like details on when the  team would practice and where at.  I play hockey in the summer and may not be able to commit to this team, but any details would be nice if you are not already full.  Thank you for the invite and hopefully this can work out.

As I announced at the all-star game this weekend, I am willing to take
a youth club team to tournaments. The first tournament that the team
would attend would be Summer Solstice in Tulsa. That is the weekend of
June 28th & 29th. I believe it would cost ten a person plus gas. If you
are interested in being part of this team please email me at
SLUHultimate@....

If we are going to take a team I would at least like to have a few
practices before the tournament for organizational purposes as well as
team building. If it goes well and everyone has a good time, I would be
down for trying to form a more permanent club team to represent our
league.

Please email me as soon as possible, so I can start hammering out the
details. Coaches if you have players that you believe would like to be
part of this, make sure to encourage their participation. Also anyone
who wants to help is very welcomed.

There went another great year!

Congratulations to Desmet on becoming State Champs. Kudos to Priory
for their second place finish and Kirkwood for the Spirit Award. All
teams should be proud of the level of play and amount of Spirit they
showed this year. We keep getting bigger and we have a lot in store
for next year, including an early season hat draw tournament
"SLUJ-BUCKET", and a late season tourney for our top teams to take on
out-of-towners "SLUJ INVITE" So play some summer league and keep fresh
for next year.

It looks like its going to be a nice day, lets hope no rain moves in.
Anyway, there are three entrances to Priory, the only one to avoid is
the sign that says Junior School entrance on it. It doesn't say that
right at the top, but in smaller text underneath. The other two
entrances will lead you to us. The game will be on the varsity soccer
field, which is in the center of the campus. I hope everyone has fun!

Thanks for these words, Jack -- I echo all of your praise, and
couldn't have said it better. Major props to Becker & Martens for
pulling together a smoothly-running league. Hats off to all the
coaches and players -- from my own perspective, I can say that in our
games I did not witness even a single moment where SOTG appeared to
slip -- good, hard competition, but always with that graceful SOTG
edge to it.

My two kids (16 & 13) have now been baptized into this wonderful game
that's been a source of fun & passion for me for the past 30 years.
I'm happy that they're learning in THIS league.

And to all the coaches: I was shooting photos at the tournament, and
will eventually (within the next few weeks) be posting them on the
SLUA website ... please alert your players to check that site; they
might find a few shots of themselves. I seem to have caught a lot of
good Priory action, in particular.

To all the teams, coaches, captains and HS players,
This is coach Jack Curran from Marquette HS. On behalf of our team and coach Tim Monahan,
I would like to say congratulations on a fantastic season.

This year proved to be one of the most rewarding years I’ve had in Ultimate. The size and scope of the league (thanks to Chris and Jason and all the coaches) the quality of the athletes, the skill level, strategy and the spirit in which you all play was incredible. All of you make up the core of the future. According to the 2007 Sport & Fitness Participation Report conducted by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, 824,000 people report playing Ultimate at least 25 times per year or more. Wow! We are almost 1 Million strong. A major milestone in this effort occurred in 2001 when Ultimate was included in the World Games for the first time as a full medal sport.

On a personal level I would like to say it is extremely exciting to see the skill, athleticism and spirit of the game on the fields all throughout the season. When I first started playing Ultimate way back in the beginning of time itself, in my first year our team went 0-10. Pretty darn frustrating. The captains only let me play defense and they watched with dread when I actually caught the disc on defense because now, I had to throw it...Yikes!! I think I played defense for two solid years before I had a decent forehand.

I would encourage the coaches and captains and players on some of the teams that struggled to stay the course and bring new schools close to your areas into the mix.  Even while losing 0-10 the first year I decided to stick it out with the encouragement of my teammates and friends and was fortunate enough to play with some great players from all over the country  on  teams that went to 8 Open Division National Championship Series, 1 Master Nationals Series, 3 World Master Championship Series and winning the championship once and finishing in top four in the nation 5 times.

There is a ton of developing talent out there. Vashon, Chaminade, Kirkwood, CBC, and Parkway as well as all the teams, have great athletes and great spirit! I was extremely impressed especially at the State Tournament at the level of play.

Congrats to Pete and the entire De Smet team! Hopefully some of those guys I helped with on JV last year contributed a bit this year.

Congrats to Priory for making the finals as well as all the teams who went to State and to Rockhurst and to Marquette for making the semifinals.

Please sign up for Summer league and keep playing. Best of luck to all the seniors going to college...keep playing in college as well.

Finally to Chris and Jason for taking this on... you are to be commended and thanked.

Best Wishes

Coach Jack Curran
Marquette HS

Last year, we let the kids decide their strategy/matchups on the line between pulls, and it worked out just fine.  I imagine it will go the same this year, but there will be plenty of idle coaches on hand if things get interesting, not to worry.

I received a call from the tournament director of Tulsa's Summer

carpooling options.

Does that mean I need to cancel the 4 referees, the 2 alternate refs,
and the official scorer I'd reserved for the game, then, too? ... :-)

See ya at the game!

Next year, I'm hoping to add a juniors charity hat draw tournament to
our ever-expanding juniors community, and I was curious what people
thought about WHEN we should have it. Two options seem most likely:

1) DURING THE REGULAR SLUJ SEASON, ON A SATURDAY. This would keep
things simple in terms of rostering and insurance (for us
organizers). We'd make the teams fairly large so as not to overtire
players (since they'll have a real game the following day). This
would optimize the tournament's usefulness as a kind of "practice"
for developing players, while at the same time promoting spirit
between opposing teams. It would also be a useful pseudo-tournament
experience in preparation for the state championships.

2) IN FALL. This would necessitate sanctioning/insuring from the
UPA for a separate event, adding a one-time event fee for non-UPA
members. Doing it in the fall would give our kids a much needed
flatball-fix during those long SLUJ-free months. Also, coaches could
use it as a kind of recruiting tool during the offseason, encouraging
kids to come and try the sport out without the pressure of joining an
actual team.

Let me know which you would prefer, and why. And promptly. I need
to move on securing a location fairly soon.

Congratulations, Pete. I would have rather seen the Desmet/Rockhurst
rematch, but I truly think the best team won, regardless. Desmet
continues to stand for high-quality, controlled, good-spirited,
intensely competitive ultimate--everything great about the sport. You
and your boys represent our sport in the best possible way. Nice
work.

Jason.

All of these teams need to nominate two all-stars by putting their
names in the database at the yahoogroup. This was a very cool,
showcase event last year. Hotdogs were grilled, some mighty fine
ultimate was played . . . it was great.

But Chris and I need to know that teams will be sending players.
Otherwise, we won't bother arranging the darn thing . . . which would
be a real shame.

So, indicate your intention to send two players by putting their
names in the database at the yahoogroup. Do it today (or at least by
Friday of this week).

Thanks.

Jason.

This means the NEW deadline for nominating your players is Friday, May 2nd.  Remember to fill out the All-Star database at the YahooGroup.

It appears that there are far too many conflicts on the 18th, so I am

However, we need someone to host it. FHC has offered, and we may well
go there, but I was hoping for something a little more central. We're
shooting for 2:00, so let us know if you have a field.

some teams are doing a terrible job of updating their scores and
records (I'm looking at you clayton) these need to be updated by the
end of this weekend so that I can properly seed teams for the tourney.

I just created a database to hold everyone's All-Star nominations.
Choose your all-stars and put their names in the database by 5/11/08.
Doing so will signify that you are, indeed, sending athletes to the all-
star game, so please get the names in there as soon as possible, so
Chris and I know how many schools will be participating.

WE HOPE, EVERY ONE OF THEM!!!

So, be a dictator and decide today. Have the players vote. Do it
however you like, as long as, once you've chosen, you put the names in
our spiffy, new database.

Thanks again for all you do, helping SLUJ run so VERY smoothly this
year. Every year, it gets a little better, a little easier, a little
more skill and parity in the league. Sure is fun to watch . . .

Jason.
