hey guys, i did not this was going on here but i set up a poll on the

should be a good way of seeing who all is in favor of doing it. Thank
you,

I am sorry not to have posted anything about the picnic earlier than this. Things have been super busy these last weeks. De Smet is in for the end of the year picnic. I cannot say that we'll have all our guys there. Also, the guys have been vague at best about when a good date might be. I'll try to look at the calendar next week and get the kids to give me some more specific input. Ok. Wish us luck this weekend in Madison.

Sorry about the late posting on the website, my internet at home is down, and there are only certain times that I can look at emails at school. I posted the results yesterday, hopefully I'll be able to get my home service working again. Anyone who hasnt seen it, the score was 15-7 Lindbergh. Does anyone from Parkway West need directions or have questions about the game Sunday?

In 9 days, you'll have the pleasure of participating in an Ultimate tournamant that will have HS teams from Kentucky, Wisconsin and KC here to compete for the Show Me State Title. In these upcoming 2 days, you will reach a new high in terms of your disc skills and field sense.
Here's some info on what to expect and how best to prepare for it:
Saturday - Pool Play
Teams are divided into equal pools and you will play every team in your pool, usually 4 games with one bye during the day. Games are played until 11 or 13 (with half time at 6 or 7)
Sunday - Elimination Rounds
Depending on your Saturday record, and points scored for and against, you will be seeded for an elimination tournament and play the first round, quarter, semis and final rounds. Usually 2-4 games, depending on how well your team does.
How do you prepare for that?
Depth - You'll need subs, more is better. Recruit players who can stay both days and run forever.
Water - You'll need lots of it. We'll have a water truck to refill your containers
Food - SLUA provides Bananas and Bagels for every player but you should still pack fruit, power bars, bananas prevent cramps, so does gatorade. Burger King and Subway are nearby and you should go as soon as the game before your bye is over. Eat quick then rest.
Rest - in between games, you'll have about 20-30 minutes. Lay low.
Sunscreen - SPF 40+ apply it often 2-3 times during the day
Shade - Find it whenever you can. Borrow a pop-up, rig up a tarp, anything
Clothes - replace socks every other game or you'll blister. Bring extra shirts, both dark and light. Bring alternate shoes, in case you blow out your cleats or start to blister.
Play - Smart, use your time-outs during long points (not after a score when you can rest, sub out and drink fluids). You should have 2 per half and try to use them.
Prepare Now - Days your team is not practicing, you should run on the roads or on a track. A good track workout is to time your 400 meter run. It's a single lap around a track. After you time your first one, walk a minute and start another. My time is about 1:20. Try to beat that first time for 7 more laps with a minute rest in between each one. You'll feel it the next day.
No hot tub, steam or sauna for 2-3 days prior to the tounament. You will be more likely to cramp up if you sweat out all of your salt stores. Trust me on this one.
To me, an Ultimate tournament is the epitome of FREEDOM. Life is good when you can take off for a weekend and play a game you love with about 300 other fanatics who all enjoy a lifestyle and affluence to be able to afford the enjoyment of chasing plastic.
Here are more specific directions to our field, and a
question...
Would you mind if we wore whites on Sunday? We have
jerseys, but only one set, and they're white.
Directions to:
5199 Highway N
St. Charles, MO
63301
From 70 West:
Get off on the HIGHWAY 94 exit and make a LEFT.
Follow HIGHWAY 94 all the way down to MID RIVERS MALL
DRIVE and make a RIGHT (this will take awhile, don't
get worried).
Two stoplights down, make a LEFT on HIGHWAY N.
Follow HIGHWAY N to the top of the hill and our campus
is on the RIGHT.
From 40 West:
Get off on the HIGHWAY 94 exit and make a RIGHT.
Follow HIGHWAY 94 all the way down to MID RIVERS MALL
DRIVE and make a LEFT.
Two stoplights down, make a LEFT on HIGHWAY N.
Follow HIGHWAY N to the top of the hill and our campus
is on the RIGHT.
Once you enter the campus, the road will fork--stay
right. Pass by the front of our building (it will be
on your right) and park in front of "Don Meunch
Memorial Stadium"--the football stadium. We actually
play on the practice fields BEHIND this stadium, but
you should see us back there warming up. Our team
will start warming up at 12:30 or so. Your team can
arrive whenever you like to begin warming up.

I did not know that this was the plan, but we can do this. Our B squad is also here that day, so you will be on a different field. This is not a problem, but you will need to bring cones. We have not got a complete second set. Let me know by the end of the day if this is the plan. If you do not get this by the end of the school day on friday, please call me at home (721-0326).

Some sing the National Anthem, but we frisbee players come together before a game and flip discs, meet the other captains, and remind every player (parents, too) that this has grown to 42 countries without the use of referees. It is perhaps the reason it has not become an Olympic sport, yet. There are no judges to pay off. ;-) In your Ultimate careers, I expect it to make it into the Olympics as it is already part of the World Games, a precursor. It surely is more deserving than Ribbon dancing or even synchronized swimming. Your HS team can enter the July tournament in Columbia and participate in the Show-Me State Games which is Missouri's portion of the World Games. More on that topic later...
Attached is a 2-page Word document that can be used prior to the games as a reminder of the unique aspect of Ultimate that governs the game -- SPIRIT. To me, Spirit is like Karma. When you play with good Spirit, the disc floats your way. More on this topic later...
Reply if you are unable to read/print the attached.
Sunday should be ideal Ultimate conditions, again. We have really been fortunate this way. Now most of you learned that a Nalgene bottle is NOT enough water for a game. You should bring a GALLON for each player.
Just yesterday, Clayton High School became the 9th team to sign up for the Classic tourney in the HS division.
Hello All,
Hope everyone has been enjoying some great weather for disc. We're
less than
a month away from what looks to be a very exciting tournament in St.
Louis.
The entry fee is $175 per team and is separate from any UPA fees.
If
your
team is interested there will be dinner available at the fields for
$5.00 per
person. Please let us know a week in advance so we'll have enough.
We
are
providing beer for participants over 21 years of age in a controlled
area. ID's
will be checked and, of course, nobody under age will be served.
Also,
there
is camping at the fields but, we ask the Juniors teams not to camp.
If
your
looking for housing I'll be able to help you get in contact with our
local HS
clubs.
For those who have not heard, the Juniors division of the Classic
will
also
serve as the Missouri State HS Championship and is an official UPA
EVENT. This
does not exclude our out-of-state guests. For those who are
familiar
with
the UPA series, the out-of-state teams will be treated like Masters
teams at
sectionals. Basically the Missouri team that finishes the highest
will
be
crowned the champion and the winner of the tournament receives a
free
bid to our
next event.
Because this is now part of an official UPA series, all Missouri HS
players
must become UPA members. Out-of-state teams' players may still
choose
to pay
the one time fee or become members.
About the paperwork for the UPA and UPA requirements:
1. Each team with youth players must have an adult chaperone. It is
recommended, but not required, that every youth team have 2
chaperones
and that 1
chaperone be retained for every 12 youth participants.
2. Each Chaperone must complete the Chaperone Form and submit it to
the
UPA.
3. Each youth player must complete the Liability waiver with the
signature of
a parent/guardian.
4. Each youth player must complete a Medical Authorization Form with
the help
of a parent/guardian. This form must be kept on site with the
appointed
Chaperone
5. Please fill out team roster. You may send this in before the
event
or
present it at the captains meeting
All forms can be found at: www.slua.org, and also are posted in the
FILES section of the STLHSUltimate Yahoo Group-->
or they may be found at:
http://www2.upa.org/resources/sanctioning/forms.shtml
Right now we have 9 teams that have registered with at least 4 local
teams
yet to be heard from. So we will be holding off on the schedule
until
the week
of the tournament.
If you have any questions or problems with the paperwork please
contact
me.

I only received TWO responses in favor of the end of season picnic /
pick-up play. Does that really mean that only 3 (including FHC) out
of the 7 teams in this league are interested in such a thing? That
would be fine, of course--we'd still have it; but I was hoping for
more involvement.
If you are interested in attending a pot-luck picnic, meeting and
talking with players across the league, chowing down, and playing some
informal pick-up games at the end of the season, please respond to
this message and let me know.

These were developed based on John Wherle and Buck Schneider's
suggestions. Unless anyone objects, they are now part of the official
league policies...
6) In the event that one team should not show up on time for a game,
the
present team will wait for a 15-minute "leeway time." If, after
these 15 minutes have elapsed, the absent team still has not arrived,
teams should line up and will earn ONE point for every THREE minutes
elapsed. The present team should line up on alternating sides of the
field for each point assessed, so that, should the absent team
arrive, play can begin immediately.
7) Teams unable to field a full team of seven players may choose to
field less than seven, instead of allowing rule 6 to take effect.
Assessing Points is very common in tournaments settings and league play around the country. You can also start a game without 7 players. We did it once with 5 and the other team at least had to work for the points they got. A good Spirit gesture--You can also "loan" some of your (newer) players to the other team and everyone gets to play.
To assess points, you agree on a leeway time, like 15 or 20 minutes. The team who has been waiting has to stand up and put 7 players on the line. It's usually done in increments of ONE point and it is assessed every 3 minutes, but it's not set in stone and can be negotiated. The point is you cannot assess points sitting under a shade tree...you have to be on the line. To prove you are assessing, one player should have a watch and after 3 minutes, you should all walk to the other end and line up again. At half time, the break between points is longer, say 10 minutes. If after 55 minutes, the other team has not put players on the line, the a forfeit is in order, but it's extremely rare.
So, we had a situation at our last July tournament where a team was down 7 to nothing before they put their team on the field. Since it was 100 degrees, they figured they were better off staying cool in the shade and drinking fluids. They went out and played the second half and ended up losing 15-13 in one of the more exciting games of the tourney--kind of a tortoise and hare story but true.
I hope this helps,
Buck

Between this one and John's option (15 minute forfeit), which do you all prefer. I agree though, some kind of rule to address this is in order.

Hi, this is John Wehrle, assistant coach at Francis Howell Central, I
would like a rule added to our list.
1. All teams shall try to be on time to each game. If a team has not
arrived by game time, the home team will wait 15 minutes, and then a
forfeit will occur.
Basically...wait 15 minutes after a game time. This means that teams
will have to be on their feet, and leave a little earlier. I would
suggest calling the head coach of the other team a day or two before a
game so you can get an accurate map of where the field is located.
Some campuses have multiple fields, and mapquest is notorious for
giving horrible directions.
what do you think?
later,
john
I think it sounds like fun. I'm in and I'll get my
teamt together too. just let me know details and i'm
all for it. also it would be cool if we mixed up the
teams for pickup. like a captains team or something
(wink wink). cause that would be cool

"Be careful what you pretend to be beacause you are what you pretend

We've talked it over, and have decided that we think it'd be nice if
all of the teams gathered for a picnic at the end of the season. It
would be a pot-luck sort of situation, at which players/parents all
bring their own food/refreshments. We could just reserve a pavillion
at some park with a couple of fields. Really let the kids have time
to meet each other and relax, talk the season over, recognize each
other for funny moments, amazing plays, etc. And then let them play
some pick-up on the nearby fields.
I need to know relatively soon if teams would be interested in such a
thing, so I can reserve a pavillion for it (or delagate that job, hint
hint).
Let me know either way.

I wanted to let everyone know, that at least for the moment, there are
no plans for a league tournament. So if you want to see these teams in
a tournament, you'll need to sign up for the classic. You have until
the 20th. Go to: http://www.stlouis-ultimate.org/
It's official, then.
In addition to having a league-winner at the end of
the season (based on win/loss records, or a tournament?), we will
also have each team cast a single vote for a Spirit Award. This
would be the team that best upheld Spirit of the Game throughout the
season, always engaged in fair play, always welcomed other teams
heartily, and always played hard and played to win, but not at the
expense of the "basic joy of play." Each team will have to vote for
A TEAM OTHER THAN ITSELF, and the team with the most votes would win
the Spirit Award.
I encourage all teams to try just as hard for the Spirit Award as
you do for the league championship! Take some time to actually meet
your opponents before games, stand around a talk about the games
afterwards. Resolve fouls in a calm, cool manner, and don't let
your competitive fire turn into negativity on the field or the
sidelines. Let's have fun, meet each other, and play hard for the
love of the game. Let's play with Spirit.

The tournament setup sounds fine, allowing the
out-of-state teams into the brackets and then simply
using the tournament rankings to designate a MO

Great idea. So far, the gesture to beat is where the Lindberg team invited the Francis Howell team out for ice cream after their pre-season game. I'd like to see one of these Home teams bring out a big cooler of gatorade or orange slices or canteloupe or pineapple chunks for the other team to consume at half time.
Enjoy!
