Dear ultimate community,
I am writing to remind you that the polls are open for the UPA Board. I am also
writing in support of Mike Payne for one of the At-Large Board positions. As the
UPA continues to grow and gain new members, their business model becomes
increasingly important. We hear a lot of talk (especially this year) about dues
and on-time rosters. This issue basically boils down to the UPA trying to
collect as much money as possible from the people that play. Equally important
to the money collection process, which the UPA seems most concerned with, is the
expenditure of those funds collected following a well thought out and well
communicated business model. This is where I think Mike is an extraordinary
canidate. From working with Mike for the last few years, he is very effective at
setting forth a managable goal and achieving it by communicating the important
points and steps to those involved in its success.
The other area of ultimate that Mike cares a lot about is the College game. He
has been involved with and responsible for the Stanford program quite for a
while, and knows a lot about what it takes to run a successful college program.
The execution of the UPA's future goals depend a lot on creating a strong
learning and competative base at the college level, and very few programs are as
strong as Stanford.
Below is a statement from Mike about these issues and his qualifications for the
position. I hope that you will consider all of this when voting for the UPA
Board members this year.

Dear members of the Bay Area Ultimate community,
I'm writing to ask your help in improving the UPA. As some of you may know, I'm
running for one of two At-Large UPA Board seats available in this Fall's
election (ending November 15th). I'd be ecstatic if you'd use your ballot
(either online or paper format) to cast a vote for me.
If that's all the information you need to make your decision, then go ahead and
vote, in one of the following ways:
Log onto the UPA online ballot here (once you log in, you should be given the
option to vote)
Send in a paper ballot - either the one included in your most recent UPA
newsletter, or download and print it here.
If you'd like to read more about the types of things I'm focused on as a
candidate before you vote, you can read my position statement at the end of this
email. In short, I'm excited about two key areas of improvement for the UPA:
Improving the "business plan" of the UPA: This includes improving the processes
by which the UPA carries out its current duties (grassroots development,
rostering, youth development, etc.), as well as advancing new initiatives, like
a plan for development of a small, corporate-sponsored semi-pro league.
Taking support for college Ultimate to the next level: Give college teams better
tools to raise money, retain coaches, recruit athletes, and send players to
club/mixed teams.
If you have any questions about my perspectives or plans as a candidate, please
email or call me. Thanks in advance for your support!

Mike Payne: Position Statement
==================================
I have lived and breathed Ultimate Frisbee for the past ten years, and I expect
that the coming years will be no different. After spending time as a player,
captain and coach, I now feel compelled to make an impact at the organizational
level, a s an at-large UPA board member. I feel confident that I not only have
goals for the UPA, but I also have a plan to make those goals a reality.
The two primary areas that I will focus on are:
Sound Business Principles for the UPA: I will thoroughly re-examine the business
principles underlying operations at the UPA and work to make the organization
more efficient from operational, and perhaps more importantly, financial
standpoints. My experience as a management consultant and a Stanford MBA will
bring new skills and perspective to the board.
Collegiate Representation & Innovation: I will improve the responsiveness of the
UPA to the large and important community of collegiate Ultimate players. Besides
representation of college players’ interests, I will work with UPA
administrative staff to improve the bid system and the rostering process. As a
collegiate coach, I will be able to speak from experience in recognizing issues
and proposing solutions for the college game.
I have a great deal of experience that would allow me to fulfill these goals
while being a motivating part of the UPA board. I have played men’s Ultimate at
the highest level for ten years, as a captain and player for Stanford
Bloodthirsty, Saucy Jack, and Jam. I was the head coach of Stanford Bloodthirsty
from 2000-2003, helping the team to a national championship in 2002. I have
directed and observed at a number of major tournaments on the West Coast, and
played city league Ultimate in San Francisco. And the amount of time I’ve spent
playing Frisbee golf…it’s ridiculous.
I have the business experience necessary to make the UPA a more efficient,
forward-thinking business. In evaluating how the UPA “does business,” I plan to
be creative in brainstorming innovative ways to finance (e.g., new dues and
tournament fee structures) programs such as promotion in cities where Ultimate
is less prevalent, juniors Ultimate, and sponsorship and press coverage. I will
also work with UPA administration to automate, streamline or outsource certain
UPA functions (e.g., dues collection, rostering, tournament administration) so
that your UPA administrative staff can focus on new programs.
My experience as a player, and more importantly as a coach in the college game,
gives me key insights into the current state and needs of collegiate Ultimate.
My coaching experience will enable me to represent college interests and to
gauge the impact UPA policy changes will have on the collegiate game.
Furthermore, I am committed to changing the Nationals bid system and rostering
process to satisfy the greatest number of those who are directly impacted –
college players.
The bottom line is…I love this sport. And I’d like the chance to work with the
UPA to make it even better. Thanks for your support!
