VU got verbals from Krueger and Skuchas; UT got one
from Boomer Herndon. Anyone care to give us a
recruiting update for their particular team?

Apparently, all that's left is for Wright's mother to visit IU, which she can do now that Mike Davis is back from that Big 10 Euro trip. Of course, we can still hold out some hope. This was supposed to be a done deal a month and a half ago. I doubt we have a shot at him anymore, but if we can get a visit, who knows?
Although I'm upset that Walker is gone (I thought he really could have played ferocious defense), I'm glad Buzz is taking a stand. Although from what I hear, the players would have been gone even under Green for repeated failed drug tests. Haislip is an idiot for allowing himself to be academically ineglible when he was going to have a huge opportunity to be a big time player for the Vols.
I'm not sure if Buzz would even have had a choice in all 3 cases, but it looks good that from the outside that he is instilling some discipline. Andy Katz reports that the Haislip thing may wind up being great for the Vols down the road, as it will allow newcomers Crump (redshirt frosh) and Wilborn to get some quality minutes early on. That's a real positive spin, but I'll take it.
Tennessee will indeed field a team this year. There's been some talk about just suspending everyone or kicking them off the team, but word around Knoxville is that UT will have at least 5 players on campus (not necessarily scholly players) to participate in collegiate basketball.
Connecticut at Storrs and potentially ND in Hawaii are the highlights.
So are the rest of the SEC scheds out? I know UK's has been for weeks.
October practice is closer than we think. Anyone bold enough to give us their preseason predictions?

The SEC Basketball board there has two threads right now -- one re:
Kentucky, one re: Florida. It seems to be marketed like it's going
to have some smack talking going on, but I guess that will be driven
by who actually posts. If it's a paid membership-only forum, like
VandyNation, then I would guess the posting would be less
aggressive. (I'm so far moderately impressed by VandyNation, btw -
but probably not something that most other teams' fans would be
interested in.)
I remember going to Ted Nation quite a bit. It was one of the more
happening places on the 'net... speaking of alcohol, democrats, and
the SEC Nation, I feel obligated to litter your inboxes with
something you would generally expect to get from that friend who you
haven't talked to in five years, but who still sends you 8 forwarded
emails every day...
(point of clarification : King Philip and myself, otherwise haughty
Vanderbilt hoops fans, are actually backwoods Alabama natives trying
to survive in the 'big cities' of our great nation. So I feel
justified in passing along this stereotypical comedy...)
"Survivor - the Dixie Experience
A major network is planning the show "Survivor 2" this winter. In
response, Alabama is planning "Survivor, Alabama Style". The
contestants will start in Huntsville, travel South through Arab, down
to Jasper and Birmingham, south through Montgomery and Maxwell AFB.
on south to Dothan and Headland. They will then proceed up North to
Troy, Phoenix City, Auburn, Sylacagua, Talladega, and via Anniston
and Gadsden back to Huntsville all by way of the secondary roads.
Each will be driving a pink Volvo, with a bumper sticker that
reads "I'm gay, I voted for Al Gore, and I'm here to confiscate your
guns."
The first one to make it back to Huntsville wins one million Georgia
lotto tickets."
See this link:

Also espn.go.com has other good content, including

There was some announcement on Vandymania's front page
about joining this great new network, and following
some links brought me to http://www.secboards.com/
Why is it that i get bad feeling from this? Maybe the
whole Rivals experience just has me scared of
corporate "bigness" when it comes to web resources i
use. For some reason I just forsee this becoming
Trash-Talk Central where, if they're successful, tons
of posts go by per day with very little said. There
are already plenty of forums like that.
Oh, and that whole "blah blah Nation" thing was played
out here in New England 2 or 3 years ago: "Patriots
Nation", "Red Sox Nation", "Ted Nation", on and on....
OTOH, kentuckysportsreport.net and GatorCountry.com
are involved, and they have really informative forums.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee head basketball coach Buzz Peterson announced Wednesday that Harris Walker and Terrence Woods have been dismissed from the basketball team after a violation of team rules.
Walker, a junior from Chattanooga, Tenn., averaged 4.5 points and 2.0 assists in 33 games last season. Woods, a junior guard from Memphis, Tenn., ranked sixth on the team last season with 5.9 points in 32 appearances.
It definitely hurts UT to lose Walker. I guess we all now know why Buzz signed the juco guard, Thaydeous (sp?) Holden. I really looked for Walker to play great defense and penetrate this year. I don't think the loss of Woods was that great. He was a shooter only, and even so, was not the best shooter on the team.
For the long haul, I think this sends a message to the other players on the team that the discipline the players need to have is extremely important to the new regime. The players got away with too much under Green (I won't bash Green though. Thank you Jerry), and Buzz has made it clear that hard work and discipline are the keys to his program. It will be interesting to see the way Walker's dismissal hurts early on though.
I wonder if Perpstars is going to add Adrian Moss to Florida's class...
Clint Jackson told me he would have been a top 50 prospect if he was
included in the 2001 rankings.
Surely the Florida class with David Lee, James White and Adrian Moss would
be ranked higher than 7th. Nobody can replace Kwame Brown, but Moss will
try.

Florida picked up another player to soften absence that Kwame made when he went #1 overall in the draft. Adrian Moss, 6-9, 215 lbs. will be playing for the Gators this season, in addition to Lee and White.

For someone as college hoops-obsessed as myself, Joe Lunardi is a
hero! Here he takes a stab at next year's NCAA Tournament bracket,
with special attention to the new regional rules.
The link... http://espn.go.com/ncb/s/bracketology/summer/index.html
The following conference teams are in (seeding in parentheses):
Florida (1)
Kentucky (1)
Mississippi (6)
Tennessee (7)
Alabama (9)
Auburn (12)
Feel free to give comments... here's a few unsolicited ones from me:
Kentucky - I agree. They're going to be good. Prince is clutch.
They'll be a legitimate National Championship contender.
Florida - They'll be good, but I don't see them as a 1 seed. If the
talent gels it could happen, but I'm pegging them for a #3 with a
chance for a Final Four run.
Mississippi and Tennessee - Can't argue too much. Tennessee has to
deal with slightly diminished talent, but has immensely better
coaching to do it. I see Barnes following up a great year with
another good one.
Alabama and Auburn - I'm not convinced. Either of these could be
bumped out. Most likely bumpers? In order... South Carolina (can
Odom bring life to Columbia?)... Vanderbilt (steadily building
talent and depth)... Arkansas (Does Nolan care? Can Joe be
replaced?)... Mississippi State (might have the athletes, but can
Stansbury get results?)... Georgia (good coach, signifantly reduced
talent). Sorry LSU (lack of players and coaching).
I found this link on the UT board and then discussion
made the rounds at Vandymania. Apologies to UT fans
for airing their dirty laundry (and posting content
that's old to y'all), but for those who haven't read
it I really think it's quite shocking how blunt he
was.

(Also i hadnt heard that Gilley left as president of
UT, so that's news to me at least.)
When JG was canned, my feeling was that regardless of
what the national media might say about unrealistic
expectations and all, those of us who observe the SEC
up close knew that something was badly dysfunctional
about that team that needed correction at the top.
This would only seem to bear that out....

Clarification re: Notre Dame vs Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt does not have a game scheduled with Notre Dame. However,
they are both playing at the Hawai'i Pacific Univ. Invitational, and
I would imagine that if both take care of business in the first two
rounds, they would meet in the finals. They are the only two high-
majors in the tournament.
The road game with Tulane is scheduled, and I'm holding out hope for
a UConn matchup. I think that would be a great series for us. We do
have one more slot to fill, and hopefully it will go to a good
opponent.
Nice board option, btw.

I caught this link on KSR/Wildcat Chat:

Apparently this is a summer version of the
(semi-?)weekly teleconference they do during the
season. I dont know if Yahoo Broadcast will carry it
like they do the in-season ones, but it's worth
checking.

Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
SECHoops group:
What do you think of the new NCAA
bracket policy?
o It's an improvement.
o They should have left it alone.
o I'll wait and see.
o What's are NCAA brackets?

Thanks!
I keep hearing about this new bracketing deal for the
NCAA, and i wondered what kind of effect it would make
on the sites. So this is what last year's would
have looked like, provided i'm understanding the new
system:
Greensboro
1. Duke (East)
2. NC (South)
Memphis
2. Kentucky (E)
4. Indiana (W) -- but if the 5 seed had been a Western
team and won out of here, it's hard to see how that
would be an improvement. I guess b/c the regional
would be in the West. As it was the 5-seed was
Cincinnati, who would probably like Memphis just fine.
Dayton
1. Mich St. (MW)
1. Ill (MW)
SD
1. Stanford (W)
2. Arizona (S)
Uniondale
3. BC (E)
3. Maryland (W)
NO
3. Florida (S)
3. Mississippi (MW)
KC
2. Iowa State (W)
4. Kansas (MW)
Boise
4. UCLA
4. Oklahoma
I guess it's a little more favorable. Boise still
gets the teams nobody wants, because let's face it,
there JUST AREN'T ANY GOOD TEAMS IN IDAHO! lol But
some of the sites clearly have more appealing "home"
teams now.

Philip

It doesn't sound likely from the article that he'll be
found ineligible, but in any case it would be awful to
leave him in limbo any longer than necessary.
Any news on this from our Florida folks?

Florida - Temple should be a really interesting
rematch of last year's NCAA game. They're definitely
the kind of team that you don't want to be facing for
the first time in the tournament.... right?

While we're waiting for others to join us here, here's
a standard summertime topic: Any interesting
non-conference games on your team's schedule?
The biggest scheduling news for Vanderbilt was a
potential home-and-home with UConn starting this
season in Nashville, but i haven't heard anything for
a few weeks now. I think the contract w/ ND
extends a couple of years, so we should play them away
this year. I thought we were supposed to play
Western Ky. at the Gaylord Entertainment Ctr. as part
of a doubleheader w/ UT, but i havent heard anything
about that recently. And Andy Katz recently
reported that we also play Tulane in N'awlins. FWIW
Tulane also plays at Kentucky, i think.
Any news about the other teams, especially Kentucky
and Florida who always play tough OOC scheds?
