Memorial's just over 14,000, post-renovations. It once was an
incredible atmosphere for games, but I believe the vbk years stifled
much of the enthusiasm. I think the problem you highlight with
Kentucky is one at many places - they lose sight of the fact that the
game is played for the students. It's college kids on the court, and
college kids should be at courtside - not only in the endzones, not
at all in the rafters. Schools like Duke that see this reap the
benefits - by having the most raucous crowds and most lopsided home-
court advantages. For this, I like the idea of the "Memorial
Maniacs" - but they're not plentiful enough, not rowdy enough, and
not surrounding the court. Winning should take care of
the "plentiful" and "rowdy" portions of that statement, though the
big spenders will still get one whole side of the court to themselves.
