Many of you have heard that JR was injured at the Olympic Short Track Trials. He received a serious laceration of his left leg and was transported to the hospital last Saturday evening.
Well, that was the bad news. I just received this note from his Dad, Bob: "We saw Dr. Heiden today, J.R. starts PT (physical therapy) tomorrow. No time to waste! He's very upbeat and can't wait to get started. The improvement in the past few days has been rapid and he's hobbling nicely on crutches, even putting pressure on it. J.R. is very determined and will be skating in the Olympics - in a very prepared state".
JR did have more than enough points to qualify him for the Olympic Team, positions of which will be determined at World Cup 3 (November 5-8) and World Cup 4 (November 12-15). So things are looking just great for him.
Dr. Heiden is former Long Track skater Eric Heiden, who won all 5 Gold Medals at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. He is now an orthopedic surgeon working in Salt Lake City, and is often the Team Doctor for US Speedskating. So JR could not be in better hands!
Maria Garcia was also injured, and transported to the hospital, with possible neck/back injuries. But it turned out well, and she was back in the hotel a few hours later.but was released later and is now home.
Jeff Simon made #5, and under the old way of doing things, that would have put him on the Team. But this year skaters have to earn their spots in each distance, and apparently he did not do that, so he was passed over. I am waiting on a easily understandable explanation of that so I can explain it to folks like yourselves.
Maria finished 9th overall. Lezleigh finished 13th. For the men, Joey finished 10th, and Eddy finished 13th. The rest of our skaters didn't make the Top 16 after the Time Trials.
