Hi, All.
I would like to clarify a few things about the upcoming Olympic Short
Track Trials. Many of you already know these facts, but many of you do
not.
First, and this was just confirmed last night, there will be NO video
coverage of the Olympic Short Trials next week. No Webcast, and as of
now, no NBC coverage. Sorry!
As for the Olympic Short Track Team, next week's Trials, in
effect, only selects the Fall World Cup Team. Then at
World Cups 3 and 4, (aka: "Olympic Qualifier Competitions") all
countries will earn spots for the number of skaters allowed to skate in
the Olympic Games. I have copied details of this below, from the US
Speedskating Short Track Regulations. Nothing FIRM will be known until
after World Cup 4 to be held in Marquette November 12-15, 2009.
Basically, each country can earn up to 3 individual skaters, per
gender, and the Top 8 Relay teams (8 per gender) will compete in the
Olympic Relay. So, after next week's Olympic Trials, the top 5 skaters
(per gender) will be known as Olympic Team "Nominees", but are not
guaranteed to be on the Olympic Team. While this has happened in the
past, some of the details this time are different, and that is why I am
sending this out to you.
For the complete document, go to US
Speedskating's website and click on "About USS", then "Rules", then
"2009/2010 Regulations - Short Track". You can also read "Olympic
Athlete Selection Procedure", but this document is from the USOC (US
Olympic Committee), and the important parts are included in the 2009/2010 Regulations - Short Track.

Athlete Selection Procedures for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games
Eligibility:
ISU Rule 286 determines the eligibility of the USA to submit entries
for these competitions.
Entry Quotas:
The 2009 Fall World Cup Team may be comprised of up to 6 Ladies and 6
men.
Selection Procedures:
C. 1. b. For selection to the 2009/2010 World Cup Team: The results
from the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Short Track Speedskating will
determine the selection of 2009/2010 World Cup Team members and will be
determined as follows unless an athlete is chosen pursuant to the Medal
Contender Clause (section I.C.1.e).
1. The winner of each Distance Classification will earn a position on
the 2009/2010 World Cup Team and will be ranked based on the Overall
Classification.
2. The winner of the Overall Classification will earn a position on the
2009/2010 World Cup Team and will be ranked after skaters named in
I.C.1.b.1, if
not previously ranked by I.C.1.b.1. If the Overall Classification
winner has already earned a position because he/she won an individual
Distance Classification, the second placed skater according to the
Overall Classification will not automatically be named based on his/her
runner-up status.
3. Additional positions on the 2009/2010 World Cup
Team will be selected first from the second place finishers in each
Distance Classification according to the final points earned in that
specific Distance Classification. If there is a tie in the Distance
Classification points, the overall classification will determine who
earns the position(s).
4. If necessary, additional positions will be
selected from the third place finishers in each Distance Classification
according to the Overall Classification.
5. Finally, if necessary, additional positions will be selected from
the highest ranked skater(s) from the Overall Classification not
already named to the 2009/2010 World Cup Team.
C. 1. d. For selection to the 2010 U.S. Short Track Olympic Team:
-Based on the results of World Cups 3-4, a maximum of 32 skaters per
gender in the 500m and 1000m events and a maximum of 36 skaters per
gender in the 1500m will compete at the Olympic Games. There will be a
maximum of 60 skaters per gender entered into the Olympic Games for all
countries. The ISU formula based upon World Cups #3 and #4 will
determine the number of skaters per distance per country. Each country
may earn up to a maximum of 3 starting positions per distance at the
Olympic Games. There is no minimum. There will be a special distance
ranking of skaters competing at World Cups #3 and #4 by the ISU that
will determine the number of start positions at the 2010 Olympic Games.
If the United States qualifies a full team of 5 athletes per gender
from World Cups 3-4, the United States will fill the quota slots and
determine starting positions utilizing the process outlined under
I.C.1.b “for selection to the 2009/10 World Cup Team” and I.C.1.c
“2009/2010 World Cup 3-4 (Olympic Qualifier Competitions)” except as
noted below in the Medal Contender Clause. If a reduction process is
needed (example: U.S. does not qualify a Relay Team and thus has only
three or fewer skaters), the Overall Classification from the 2010
Olympic Team Trials-Short Track Speedskating will apply. Skaters who
have earned the most points according to their overall ranking will
earn the berth(s) on the Olympic Team except as noted below in the
Medal Contender Clause. Then, the individual Distance Classification
ranking from the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Short Track Speedskating
among the reduced team will determine which skaters fill the individual
start positions in each distance at the Olympic Games.
A) To be eligible, World Cup skaters must commit to attend all World
Cups #1, #2 #3 & #4.
B) The coaches shall have the discretion to select which skaters
compete the relay event at the World Cups #1, #2, #3 and #4.
