Hello there. Hope that everyone enjoyed the weekend.
Southern California sent a large and a fast group of speed skaters, led Coach Boomstra with equipment support from Robert Ahlke, to American Cup I in Minnesota. This event tested skaters skills and summer preparations and selected the American Team for the Fall World Cups.
We are proud of all of our skaters who raced in Minnesota. I am very pleased to report that there will be four Southern California speed skaters racing for the United States at the World Cups this fall. Southern California speed skaters on the Fall World Cup Team are:
- Maria Garcia (2006 Olympian), placed 6th overall, her best race was a 3rd place finish in the 1000m.
- Jeff Simon (2008 World Team), won the men's division this weekend with a gold medal performance in the 500m, 1500m and 1500m super final.
- JR (John) Celski (2008 Jr. World Team), placed 3 overall with his strongest showing of the weekend earning a silver in the 1500m super final.
- Ryan Cox Leveille (2006 Long Track Olympian), placed 5th overall. Ryan's strongest race was a silver in the 1000m.
Jeff, JR, Maria and Ryan will join World Champion Apolo Ohno to race for the USA at World Cup I in Salt Lake City October 17 - 19 and World Cup II at the Olympic site in Vancouver, Canada October 24 - 26.
