I'm curious about chapter meetings. Is there a regular schedule? How are members notified about meetings?

Generally we meet twice a year, once in late January or early February, and once around the time of the World Series. I am not sure if our President, Roger Erickson, has a specific date in mind for this fall.

We usually work in a ball game each summer too, but we missed this summer.

In addition to that we kind of piggy back onto local events when we can, such as the KC A's reunion stuff, or programs at the Negro Leagues Museum.

All members are contacted by email about upcoming meetings. The details are also in the KC Star in the Monday Top of the Morning column, thank to Bradford Doolittle.  Also the SABR web site should have a list of upcoming meetings.

I'd like to track down a copy of the book Unions To Royals that the KC SABR chapter apparently put out in 1996. I haven't seen any for sale online; I don't suppose there's any chance a member has a copy for sale?

Contact Lloyd Johnson, he is most likely to have an extra copy. You can get his info from the SABR member directory on the web site. If Lloyd does not have an extra, half price books seems to turn them up fairly regularly.

Hi all, thanks for the welcome Mike.

A couple questions:

Oh Susan,

One more question, I am planning on sending a quickie news letter next
week about the upcoming meeting, if you have something written up
about the exhibit - dates or a web site link - would you let me know
so I could include it?

Thanks!

Mike

Hi Susan,

Dr. Ray Doswell, the curator for the NLBM would be good, he is a SABR
member and you could just contact him through the museum.

Joe Posnanski, from the Kansas City Star, who wrote The Soul of
Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America. He is an amazing
guy.

Dr. Leslie Heaphy, Kent State - SABR member - info should be on the
web site to contact. Obviously it is during the school schedule, and
coming from Ohio, so it might be dicey.

Larry Lester, SABR Negro League committee chair, from Kansas City.

Phil Dixon, http://www.americanbaseballchronicles.com/about.htm, also
from KC. Authored several books about the Negro League.

Lloyd Johnson, W. Lloyd in the SABR directory - first director of the
Negro Leagues Museum, also in KC. Interesting speaker.

Ralph Christian, works for the Iowa State Historical society, in a
good speaker.

Kevin Johnson, from Broken Arrow, OK. Done a lot of good research on
Negro Leagues lately. Very impressed with him.

That is probably a good starting point, I tried for the most part to
stay local to our area. If you have a bigger transportation budget
there are lots of other names.

The people above are all historian type people, to contact former
players I would work with Ray Doswell or Bob Kendrick of the Negro
Leagues Baseball Museum.

Hope this helps, if you have further questions feel free to contact me.

Mike Webber

Tribute: Donna Mae Stewart, 71, of Lees Summit, 'a dyed-in-the-wool baseball fan'

By JACQUIE LEHATTO
Special to The Star

Who: Donna Mae Stewart, 71, of Lee’s Summit.

When and how she died: Feb. 19, of complications from breast cancer.

Diehard fan: Donna Wakeley was a true New York Yankees fan. She was attending a high school summer league game in Illinois when she struck up a conversation with Yankees scout Art Stewart.

“I was looking at a 17-year-old, left-hand pitcher, Larry Gura,” Art said.

Gura went on to pitch for the Kansas City Royals in the 1980 World Series, and Art went on to be Donna’s husband for 47 years.

“If there was ever love at first sight, that was it for me, and her, too,” Art said. “The most amazing thing was that she was a dyed-in-the-wool baseball fan.”

Change of allegiance: Donna Stewart loved baseball, but her love for the Yankees wasn’t so permanent. Her husband joined the new Royals organization in 1969 as a scout. The couple’s home base continued to be Chicago.

“After that first year, I came home and my den, which was all decorated with Yankees memorabilia, had been changed over to Royals blue,” Art said.

In 1984, they moved to Lakewood in Lee’s Summit.

“I thought she would miss Chicago, but after that first year, she called Kansas City home,” Art said. “She loved it.”

On the road: Being married to a baseball scout meant long weeks away from home.

“Every summer, from the time I got out of school until the time I went back, we were on the road,” said the Stewarts’ daughter, Dawn Stewart. “Sometimes we’d see five ballgames a day.

“As long as we were together, it didn’t matter,” Dawn said. “And that’s how my mom felt about my dad.”

In the stands: Donna attended all Royals’ home games and many of the away games, establishing friendships with the players and their families. She met many of the players as prospects.

“She saw these kids, the George Bretts and the Frank Whites, since they were 18-year-olds,” Art said. “She watched them grow up.”

She also was available for advice or just some mothering when the young players needed it.

Brett and White flew in from spring training to speak at her memorial service last month.

Flower lady: One thing about Donna that wasn’t Royals blue was her green thumb.

“She had beautiful gardens,” said her friend and neighbor, Phyllis Combest. “She taught me so much about flowers. Every morning we would meet for coffee on my deck or her patio.”

Courageous: Six months ago, when Donna called Art to tell him that she would not be able to make a home game because she had a backache, he knew something was wrong. Doctors found breast cancer had metastasized to her spine. She endured operations and therapy, hoping to beat the disease.

“She was one of the bravest people I have ever been around,” Combest said. “She was very stoic. We can all take a lesson from her.”

Survivors include: Her husband, daughter and son-in-law, two grandsons, and the Royals players she loved.

The last word: Art will be inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame this year during a ceremony honoring his 39 years with the team.

“Donna really would be my partner for the Hall of Fame,” he said. “I know she will be looking down, waving and wearing Royals blue.”

A Friendly Reminder:

Cardinals Winter Warm Up
January 19th to the 21st and the Millenium Plaza in downtown St. Louis

Anybody in the chapter, whether you're a Cardinals fan or not, is
welcome to attend.

I know some of it probably conflicts with the Royals Fan Fest, but I'd
like to see of my chapter members there anyway.

Buck O'Neil's birthday party will celebrate life of the legend
By BRADFORD DOOLITTLE

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum will celebrate Buck O'Neil's birthday this
week. Buck was born Nov. 13, 1911.

Among events planned are an exhibit entitled "Right on Time" that chronicles
Buck's remarkable life. That'll be on display at YRC Worldwide, 10990 Roe
Ave. in Overland Park, on business days from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. during
Nov. 6 to Nov. 13. YRC will also play host to Monarchs Day on Friday,
featuring former players Jess Rogers and Ulysses Hollimon and former umpire
Bob Motley.

On Saturday, the museum is throwing a fund-raising birthday party in honor
of Buck at the Gem Theater. There will be music by Bobby Watson, Brian
Kennedy, the McFadden Brothers and Morris Day and the Time.

Call at 816-221-1920 for tickets.

I was at our most recent chapter meeting and was glad to learn
that there was a Yahoo! group for our chapter. I hope to be at more
chapter meetings and am looking forward to the next one whenever that
may be. It just can't be anytime from January 19-21 - that's when
Cardinals' Winter Warm Up is. Whenever it is, I'll be there with
bells on. Will we be participating in any activities with the Negro
League Baseball Museum?
