HOWE, WILLIAM (BILL) F. JR., of Boca Grande, FL and Rumford, RI,
passed away quietly in his sleep on Tuesday June 26th, 2007. Born in
Natick, Massachusetts in 1922 to Brigadier General William Howe and
the former Margaret Allen of Nantucket, Bill was preceded in death by
his wife of 45 years, Joan Kock Howe and his sister Peggy White

Bill is survived by his sister, Betty Constable of Princeton, NJ and
Nantucket; a son, Billy Howe of Annapolis, MD; two daughters, Jinx
Howe Horan of Boca Grande and Nantucket and Robin Gross of Rumford, RI
and seven grandchildren (including Virginia, Corlis and Frances Gross
of Rumford). Bill served as a 2nd Lieutenant in WWII as a bombardier
with the 15th Air Force and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. A
graduate of Phillips Andover Academy and Yale, Bill played hockey and
baseball for the Elis. He represented Yale in the inaugural NCAA
College World Series and was voted 1st team All American; only one of
three players in Yale baseball history. An avid sportsman through
life, Bill won the RI State Squash championship several years and was
a member of the US Seniors Golf Association. Until his retirement, he
was the owner of Howe's Racquet Shop in Providence RI. Pop will always
be remembered for his smile, athletic grace and modest manner; he was
a friend to everyone and was truly a representative of this country's
Greatest Generation. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to The
Johann Fust Community Library, Boca Grande, FL 33921, The Suncoast
Humane Society, 6781 San Casa Drive Englewood, FL 34224 or the Island
School, Boca Grande, FL. Details of a service for Bill have not yet
been finalized.
