I recall the lower deck in center field was considered the 'bleachers'.
Similar to Shibe Park, where the lower seats in fair territory in left
were definitely bleachers (no ambiance, plus distinctive odor).
The upper deck in Shibe park was, I believe, general admission.

Subject: [SABRballparks] last home run at Ebbets Field redux
I ran across this article when looking for info about the last days of
Ebbets Field: http://tinyurl. com/nre7qw
Short version: this guy claims to have two photos which show his
brother hit a home run at Ebbets Field in September, 1959, in some kind
of Little League playoff game. If the date is right, that would likely
be the last home run, being later than the one Herm Green hit off
Satchel Paige on August 23 (written up in the NY Times the next day).
It plausible enough, except the writer could have done more research
very easily. A quick NY Times search shows that Schenectady won the NY
State title on August 15, and the Little League World Series was all
over on August 29. Also, the story at the end about the guard and the
bleachers and locking up the field for the last time is plainly a crock
- nothing was demolished at Ebbets Field until February, 1960; Ebbets
Field didn't have any bleachers after the 1931 renovation; there was
still soccer going on in late September, anyway; and Gay Talese wrote a
great article in October about the crowd of 4 workers at Ebbets Field
watching the Dodgers win the World Series on a television set in the
maintenance room.
Still, the photos are real enough. Is it possible that some other kind
of junior championship happened at Ebbets Field in September? Or maybe
the date written on the photos refers to the month they were developed,
rather than when they were taken? Which of these possibilities is more
likely?
Also, since the Dodgers still controlled the field, is it possible they
still have a record of who rented it, and when? If so, how might I get
hold of that?
Any help and thoughts much appreciated!
Thanks,
- David Dyte
