Bob Kriedler asked: I have been appearing in a one-man show re:1869-70
Cincinnati Red Stockings. I play Charlie Gould. Part of the show is
audience interaction with me in character. Charlie was a player and
then manager in the 1876-1877 incarnations of the Red Stockings. I am
having trouble identifying the location of the Lincoln Park Grounds
where they played in 1876 and the Avenue Grounds where he played until
they let Gould go in 1877. Can you help me with an address or location
of both parks?

Lincoln Park was constructed immediately after the Civil War and was
located just over 1 mile from Fountain Square, the center of the
downtown area. The eastern boundary was Freeman Ave (now Western Ave.)
It was one block wide and about 2 blocks long, bordered on the north by
Kenner Street and the south by Hopkins Street. Union Grounds was built
immediately to the west of Lincoln Park.

Lincoln Park was conveted into parking lot for the art-deco Union
Terminal train station when the station was under construction in the
early 1930s. The are is still a parking lot, now for the Museum Center
which moved into the train station in 1990.

Union Grounds grandstand was torn down in 1872. I don't know if baseball
continued to be played on this site or for how long. There was no pro
baseball in Cincinnati from 1871-1875; the NL Reds formed in 1876 and
played at Avenue Grounds.

Avenue Grounds was located about 4 miles northwest of downtown, just
west of Spring Grove Avenue, between the Baltimore and Ohio railroad
tracks on the east, the Millcreek on the west, Arlington Street on the
north, and Milligan Street (now Ledlie Street) on the south.

Avenue Grounds would have been about 2.5-3 miles from Union
Grounds.

There is no marker for Avenue Grounds, however, the Museum Center in
conjunction with the Reds Hall of Fame, is erecting a marker to honor
the site of Union Grounds in front of the Union Terminal/Museum Center
building.
