Dear Rob:
This is an article I had wrote for the Emil Rothe Chapter Newsletter. I am working on the second half of it now. I am not sure if it is what you are looking for. I do have images to go with it.:
We are going back to Japan in July and will tour from one ball park to the next. I still have that card that you wanted. Do you still want it?

To refresh your memory, the new newsletter will be designed more like a journal with articles about Asian baseball rather than season summaries.
We are looking for writers. Articles can be on anythingthing about Asian baseball -- Bios of asian players, commentarries on the state of the game, statistical studies, book reviews. We especially are interested in updates of current research projects. Articles can, and should, be republished elsewhere after appearing in the newsletter. The length can vary greatly from a few hundred words to full-length journal articles.
If you would like to write for this newsletter or the next please email me.

Sorry for getting in on this thread late. I'm fluent in Mandarin Chinese and can deal with both Traditional and Simplified characters, if anybody needs any help.

May be tough to find, Rob, but I'll give it a try. I'll call in some favors if I have to.
I collect stats from pro baseball leagues around the world. I use them to create player cards (we refer to them as discs because they are round shape) for use in an old-time baseball game that was originally known as Ethan Allen All Star Baseball. Allen was an active major leaguer at the time he developed and marketed the game. It later became known as Cadaco All Star Baseball. It was in production, with new player discs, every year from 1941 through 1993! It was issued again twice in the last few years but had few buyers. We do have a "neighbor" Yahoo group for the game with over 200 members, many of whom, like myself, have been with the game since the very first edition or shortly after.
Anyway, I have the stats from Japan, Taiwan and Korea. The Japanese stats are easy enough to come by, in English, on the internet. Not so for the Korean stats, at least not in English, but I am fortunate in being able to deal with the language aspects of both the Taiwan and Korea baseball stats websites, as well as the Japanese sites for needed info that's not available in English.

A piece on your experience as a coach in China would be awesome. We are releasing the next newsletter in early May, but if you want to shoot for the Fall newsletter that would be fine too.

Be aware, though, as I just explained to Rod, you won't find Asian stats there. I'm probably the only one of the 200+ members with Asian baseball as the primary interest. As I complete them, I do make my disc sets available to the members who might want them.
For the 2006 season, I have completed Japan, am working on Taiwan and then have Korea left. For Japan, I make one set for the top hitters and pitchers for each league and then a set for both league champs. For Taiwan and Korea, I similarly make an all star set and then a set for the first and second place teams.

Rob:
Japan Times Jack Gallagher says if SABR is going to
take it verbatim, then they should say
republished with the permission of The Japan Times.
If this is on website, Gallagher advises them to link
it to the JT site so that people can see all of the

That's fascinating. I assume you studied Chinese before you went. I was trained in Mandarin, Japanese and Burmese.
The baseball website for the Chinese pro baseball league is a real bear. Pages take forever to load, and I've never been able to complete the registration process. Do you by any chance have access to complete stats from the 2006 season?

Below are links to Robert Whiting's very interesting articles on the future of Japanese baseball.
The future of Japanese baseball would make an ideal theme for either this newsletter or the next one.
After reading these articles, would anybody like to write a piece commenting on what Bob's has to say? We could include 4-5 such pieces along with Bob's articles in the newsletter. I would especially like to hear the views of some native Japanese. I would be happy to help anybody with editing to reduce the amount of time needed to create a newsletter article.

We are starting to put together the first issue of the new
newsletter.
To refresh your memory, the new newsletter will be designed more
like a journal with articles about Asian baseball rather than season
summaries.
We are looking for writers. Articles can be on anythingthing about
Asian baseball -- Bios of asian players, commentarries on the state
of the game, statistical studies, book reviews. We especially are

COMING SOON!!!
THE SABR ASIAN COMMITTEE BLOG!!

Rob Fitts, an historian on Japanese
baseball and culture, will speak on Thursday, April 19, at SUNY Cortland.
Fitts will deliver a two-hour
presentation titled “An Oral History of Japanese Baseball” at 2:30
p.m. in Studio West, Room 101. Presented by the SUNY Cortland Sport Management
Club, the talk is free and open to the public.
Fitts, who chairs the Society of American
Baseball Research (SABR)’s Asian Baseball Research Committee, received
his B.A. in history and anthropology from the University
of Pennsylvania and his M.A. and Ph.D.
from BrownUniversity. He has written numerous
articles on Japanese baseball and culture.
Following his presentation, Fitts will
sign copies of his book, Remembering
Japanese Baseball: An Oral History of the Game, for which he
received the 2005 Sporting News-SABR Baseball Research Award. Signed copies can
be purchased for $20.
Fitts, who lives in New York City, is president of Rob’s
Japanese Baseball Cards, which sells cards, autographs, and memorabilia
associated with Japanese baseball. Baseball cards and other items from his
store will also be available for purchase at the event.
In 2006, David Snyder, an associate
professor in SUNY Cortland’s Sport Management Department and the vice
chair of SABR’s Asian Baseball Committee, was named editor-in-chief of
the committee's official newsletter, the Asian Baseball Newsletter. With
encouragement from Fitts and the committee, Snyder created opportunities for
students to help produce the newsletter.
Fitts’ appearance corresponds with
research presentations to be given by several SUNY Cortland students during the
College’s Scholars’ Day on Wednesday, April 18. The students will
discuss their part in the newsletter production.
The lecture is partially funded through a
Campus Artist and Lecture Series grant. For more information, contact Snyder at
(607) 753-5504 or by e-mail at snyderd@....
An investigative committee has found that the Seibu Lions, a
Pacific League baseball club, paid from 100,000 yen to 10 million yen to 170
managers and others affiliated with amateur baseball teams for 27 years until 2005
as rewards for helping the pro baseball team acquire new players. The
revelation of organized improper conduct of this nature over a long period is a
huge blot on the worlds of both professional and amateur baseball.
(snip)
The report cites a Seibu Lions official in charge of
scouting as saying, "I feel that other clubs are doing similar things;
therefore, we cannot afford to fall behind them." This is a grave
statement that casts a dark cloud over Japan's professional and amateur
baseball. A pro baseball scout is reported to have said that some people in
amateur baseball teams demanded cash gifts. It goes without saying that those
who made the payments are to blame. But those who received the payments should
be blamed, too, for violating the Japan Students Baseball Association's
charter, which forbids providing or receiving cash gifts.
