Dusty Rhodes died on June 17.

He holds one record that may never be broken or tied: in the 1954
World Series he had three games where he did not start, but still
managed at least 2 RBIs. No-one else has had more than one such game
in a single World Series: Carl Furillo is the only player with two
games like that, in 1947 and 1959.

The Giants swept the Indians in 1954: Monte Irvin started all four
games in left field for the Giants, but Rhodes pinch-hit for him in
the first three games, then did not play in Game 4. In 6 at-bats,
Rhodes hit two home runs and drove in seven runs. The other Giants
had 124 at-bats, zero home runs and 13 RBI. No-one else on either
team had more than 3 RBI or one home run.

Here's a tough question for anyone: has there ever been another World
Series where the player with most home runs (or RBI) in the Series did
not start a game?

This is Ron Liebman.  In 1959, Chuck Essegian hit 2 home runs as a pinch-hitter
in the World Series (not starting a game) and tied with Charlie Neal for Dodger
lead with 2 home runs.  (Ted Kluszewski led Series with 3 for the losing White
Sox).  Essegian (with only 1 home run, not as pinch-hitter during 1959 season)
homered as a pinch=hitter on opening day to become first player (with asterisk
of course) to pinch-homer in 3 cons games of record.  Essegian had 2 other pinch
home runs in career - one in 1961 and 1 in 1962.  In 1976, Jim Mason (a relief
shortstop in 3 games) hit the Yankees' only home run; Johnny Bench had 2 for
Cincinnati Reds (both in final game) to lead both teams in home runs.  I hope
that this may be of some help to you, Pete.    Sincerely, Ron Liebman 6/24/2009
