I created these lists a few days ago when Joe Mauer was hitting .425, including
an amazing .507 at home. I thought they might be of interest:
Mauer's going for his 2nd straight month hitting .400 (presently .397 for June)
:
CONSECUTIVE .400 MONTHS; MIN. 75 PA
Rico Carty, 1970:
Month G AB R H AVG
April 21 78 22 33 .423
May 25 87 23 39 .448
George Brett, 1980:
Month G AB R H AVG
July 21 85 18 42 .494
August 30 121 26 52 .430
Rod Carew, 1983:
Month G AB R H AVG
April 18 78 12 35 .449
May 22 89 14 39 .438
Milt Thompson, 1987:
Month G AB R H AVG
July 23 76 19 31 .408
August 28 108 12 45 .417
Paul O'Neill, 1994:
Month G AB R H AVG
April 19 67 14 30 .448
May 23 78 16 32 .410
Larry Walker, 2002:
Month G AB R H AVG
June 23 83 22 34 .410
July 24 89 18 39 .438
Ichiro Suzuki, 2004:
Month G AB R H AVG
July 26 118 23 51 .432
August 28 121 21 56 .463
Chipper Jones, 2008:
Month G AB R H AVG
April 23 90 17 38 .422
May 27 96 21 40 .417
....I think the list goes back to 1957 or so. Shows how hard it is to hit .400
for 5 or 6 months when only a few guys in the last 50 yrs can do it for 2 months
in a row.
-------------------
Also, Mauer's been at or above .400 at the end of every game this year--except
one. Out of all the players who ended up at .400 for the season, here are some
comparisons:
GAMES AT OR ABOVE .400
100%: Nap Lajoie spent every game of the season at or above .400 in 1901
99%: Sam Thompson spent every game of the season, except for 1g, at >=.400 in
1894
98.6%: George Sisler spent 140/142 games at or above .400 in 1922
98%: Fred Dunlap spent 99/101 games in 1884
[TWilliams spent 78.3% (112/143) at or above .400 in 1941]
[Rogers Hornsby spent a mere 21 games at or above .400 in 1922, so Mauer's
already passed him! Lowest by an ALer is 49 games by Cobb in 1922]
---------------------------------
Mauer's hitting .507 at home [now a mere .458 at home] and .360 on the road. It
would be the highest home average ever, over a full season:
.488: Joe Jackson in 1912 at League Park #2
.479: Tip O'Neill in 1887 at Sportsmans Park #1
.478: Rogers Hornsby in 1925 at Sportsmans Park #4
.465: Ed Delahanty in 1894 at Philadelphia Baseball Grounds
.473: George Sisler in 1920 at Sportsmans Park #4
.469: Rogers Hornsby in 1924 at Sportsmans Park #4
.467: Chuck Klein in 1933 at Baker Bowl
.461: Larry Walker in 1999 at Coors Field
.458: Ed Delahanty in 1899 at Baker Bowl
.457: Jesse Burkett in 1896 at League Park #1
.453: George Sisler in 1922 at Sportsmans Park #4
.453: Lefty O'Doul in 1929 at Baker Bowl
...note that several parks made repeat trips to that list.
Conversely, his .360 road average would be the sixth-lowest road avg for any
.400 hitter:
.332: Hornsby in 1925
.337: Delahanty in 1894
.341: Sisler in 1920
.353: Delahanty in 1899
.356: Hamilton in 1894
