About 99% of the time, they get their information from the clubs involved.  They in turn get their information from a variety of sources but they do make mistakes.

... I also saw Giles being credited with the 'all-time' record for walks in a nine-inning game, but Jimmie Foxx (1938) and Walt Wilmot (1891) each had 6 walks...
