Here are some players who are close (some closer than others) to
setting or tying some major league records this season:
Luis A. Gonzalez needs 18 more errorless games at 2B this season to
tie Ryne Sandberg's record for consecutive errorless games at that
position at 123.
Jim Thome needs to score in two more consecutive games to tie the AL
record held by Red Rolfe and Kenny Lofton of scoring in 18
consecutive games played. Billy Hamilton holds the major league
record at 24 straight games, but he also had separate streaks of 18
and 20 games at other points in his career. The modern NL record is
17 held by Ted Kluszewski and Rogers Hornsby.
Tom Glavine has 13 consecutive starts dating back to last season in
which he has allowed 3 runs or fewer; I believe the record is held
by Pedro Martinez, who had 24 in a row from 1999 to 2000. Jack
Chesbro had an amazing 36 straight starts (plus 4 more relief
appearances) in 1904 in which he allowed 3 EARNED runs or fewer in
each start.
Morgan Ensberg is two games with a homer away from tying the ML
record for consecutive games with a HR--8, which is held by Dale
Long, Don Mattingly, and Ken Griffey Jr. If Ensberg hadn't gone 0-
for-1 on April 13, he would now have an extra-base hit in 11
consecutive games, a feat that has occurred only 6 known times and
whose record is held at 14 by Paul Waner.
IF others know of possible record feats (either mainstream or weird
records like some of the ones I've mentioned), please post them to
this group so we can all track them!
