This is where I have to tell my story and pat myself
on the back. I do defensive stats for the 49ers.
Really the only official defensive stat is sacks but I
note the tackles which are put into the play by play.
Several years ago, Charles Haley was in on a sack play
and I was going to give him half a sack with someone
else. The 49ers PR guy and several others put
pressure on me to give Haley the solo sack as it would
have given him some sort of record. I succumbed to
the pressure as it was not a big deal to me. That
week the chief statistician of the 'Niners (who
supported my call) sent me an article from his local
paper that said the NFL had reviewed the play and gave
only half a sack to Haley. Yoo Hoo!
