I'm not sure. Here are two quotations from Reach's Guide 1884
(completed spring 1884):
From the Constitution of the A.A. [Reach's Guide 1884 p153]:
>>
[Article X, Championship]
Sec 11, The championship shall be decided in the following manner:
Within [24] hours of the completion of every match game played for the
championship, the home club shall prepare and forward to the Secretary
of the Association a statement containing the full score [box score] of
the game, . . . Provided that no tie or drawn game shall be considered
"a game" for any purpose; . . .
<<
From the Playing Rules of the A.A. [Reach's Guide 1884 p161]:
>>
Class V, The Game
Rule 38. A Drawn Game
[defined . . .]
The score of every drawn game must be certified to the Secretary, and go
upon the record of each player participating therein in the same manner
as other championship games.

I hope that others will look up some NL and AA constitutions and scoring
rules for nearby league-seasons.
