I apologize for those who'll get this message twice; I also sent it
to SABR-L this afternoon:
Dating back to last year, Alex Rodriguez now has had an extra-base
hit in 10 straight games (thru Tuesday's game). It is very rare to
see a streak of that length. The known Yankees record is also 10
games in a row, done twice:
10-Don Mattingly, 7/7/1987-7/19/1987 (4 doubles, 0 triples, 10 homers)
10-Paul O'Neill, 7/22/2001-8/1/2001 (6 doubles, 0 triples, 4 homers)
...which also means that Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig never got to 10
games in a row with an extra-base hit in each.
But A-Rod's streak is also very close to the top all-time American
League mark of 11 games in a row
11-Hank Greenberg, DET, 9/4/1940-9/14/1940 (4 doubles, 1 triple, 8
homers)
11-Jesse Barfield, TOR, 8/17/1985-8/27/1985 (8 doubles, 3 triples, 1
homer)
Here are the all-time top streaks, for all leagues:
14-Paul Waner, PIT NL, 6/3/1927-6/19/1927 (12 doubles, 5 triples, 3
homers)
14-Chipper Jones, ATL NL, 6/26/2006-7/16/2006 (8 doubles, 1 triple, 7
homers)
12-Tip O'Neill, STL AA, 8/24/1887-9/5/1887 (14 doubles, 3 triples, 2
homers)
12-Rogers Hornsby, BOS NL, 5/27/1928(G1)-6/9/1928(G1) (9 doubles, 0
triples, 8 homers)
11-Rogers Hornsby, STL NL, 8/20/1924(G1)-8/27/1924 (9 doubles, 1
triple, 6 homers)
11-Hank Greenberg, DET AL, 9/4/1940-9/14/1940 (4 doubles, 1 triple, 8
homers)
11-Bob Bailey, MON NL, 6/22/1970(G2)-7/12/1970 (7 doubles, 0 triples,
7 homers)
11-Jesse Barfield, TOR AL, 8/17/1985-8/27/1985 (8 doubles, 3 triples,
1 homer)
11-Bobby Abreu, PHI NL, 5/7/2005-5/18/2005 (4 doubles, 0 triples, 9
homers)
As far as I know, no one's picked up on A-Rod's streak since it spans
two seasons, although awareness of multi-season streaks has increased
a lot in recent years thanks to Jimmy Rollins's 38-game multi-season
hitting streak. Elias Sports Bureau does recognize multi-season
streaks in their record book. If Rodriguez gets another extra-base
hit tonight (Wed night) vs. the Twins, it will be interesting to see
if it gets any attention as having tied the AL record.
