Steve: For a prime example check the box score printed in TSN for 30 September 1939 (Washington @ Philadelphia ). Joe Haynes of Washington faced 42 batters, but the box score only showed that he faced 40 batters. What happened to the two missing PA's (Plate Appearance)??? The summary in the TSN box score is missing LOB's and should have shown 10 Athletics Left On Base. The proof is 27 PO's+ 5 Runs+ 10 LOB's=42 BFP's (Batters Faced Pitcher). Six Batters had five PA's=30 and Three Batters had four PA's for the total of 42 BFP's.

I am not writing to testify either in favor or against the accuracy of the boxscores the Sporting News used to publish, but I can give some insight into how we accumulated boxscores in the decade or so before we stopped publishing them all together. People can make of this what they wish.
When I started working at TSN in 1986, producing the boxscores was the responsiblity of one man. He had been doing this work for at least a decade, and he continued until we stopped. His dedication to thoroughness and accuracy was beyond reproach, and he was completely familiar with baseball's rules and its scoring rules. In fact, he had spent considerable time as an official scorer for
Cardinals home games.
This person would begin his work every morning by clipping the boxscores from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. It is my understanding that the P-D printed AP boxscores, so that's where this work began. But it's not where it ended. Boxscore Man then proofed every boxscore. Not surprisingly, he found mistakes in many of them. I would say, from memory, at least sixty percent had mistakes. To fix these errors, Boxscore Man would then call both teams and try to iron things out. This work generally took 3-4 hours per day. Only then would the revised boxscore be entered into our publishing system.
For several years, I kept the clipped P-D boxscores, taped as they were to yellow sheets of paper, with the handwritten changes added.
Does all this mean that the boxscores we published during the tenure of Boxscore Man were perfect? No, of course not. But it does indicate, I think, that we approached the work with
a good deal of care.
Best,
Steve
