something tied to my ankle. I finished just under 2 hours! I will write a race

told him to man-up as I passed him LOL.

Hi all,

Well dang, it sure would be hard for a podiatrist to make any money off of special shoes and insoles if one is running barefoot!!!  LOL
Great articles!!!

So the APMA, the podiatrists' association, has put out a grudging statement on barefoot running:

http://www.apma.org/MainMenu/News/MediaRoom/PositionStatements/APMA-Position-Statement-on-Barefoot-Running.aspx

As always barefooting is forced to bear the burden of proof -- it might make more sense it you swapped "running barefoot" and "running with shoes" in their first paragraph.  Then it would read like this:

Running with shoes has become an increasing trend, and a possible alternative or training adjunct to running barefoot. While anecdotal evidence and testimonials proliferate on the Internet and in the media about the possible health benefits of running in shoes, research has not yet adequately shed light on the immediate and long term effects of this practice.

Finally, the podiatrists encourage the public to consult a podiatrist -- now there's a surprise.

I think this is what you call "being dragged kicking and screaming" into a reassessment of professional folklore.

APMA Position Statement on Barefoot Running

Barefoot running has become an increasing trend, and a possible alternative or training adjunct to running with shoes. While anecdotal evidence and testimonials proliferate on the Internet and in the media about the possible health benefits of barefoot running, research has not yet adequately shed light on the immediate and long term effects of this practice.

Barefoot running has been touted as improving strength and balance, while promoting a more natural running style. However, risks of barefoot running include a lack of protection--which may lead to injuries such as puncture wounds--and increased stress on the lower extremities. Currently, inconclusive scientific research has been conducted regarding the benefits and/or risks of barefoot running.

The American Podiatric Medical Association, along with the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, encourages the public to consult a podiatrist with a strong background in sports medicine to make an informed decision on all aspects of their running and training programs.

Seen the humerous Shoe Guy article in this month's Running Times?

In summary, he claims it's ok to take your shoes off AFTER YOU RUN - to let
your feet rest and rejuvenate, as long as you put some slippers or proper
sandals on (not flip-flops!).

He's going down fighting...

You can't really blame the Podiatrists. They have huge mortgages, expensive car payments, and stocks that bottomed out last October. They're only trying to save their business. The more shoe related injuries, the more patients to see.  (Tongue in Cheek...kinda) =) Gump

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, the Orange County marathon is scheduled for 2010 May 2
- I was really tired this year when I ran the course - I had "run" the Palos
Verdes Marathon the previous day... But, I think I remember it was pretty
barefoot friendly, and I got to run with Barefoot Julian for the first couple
miles (until he got bored running an 11-12 minute/mile pace).
http://www.ocmarathon.com

Many folks have run barefoot at the Rock 'n' Roll, San Diego (end of May, or
early June) - Todd and I even met one guy (a couple years ago), who had taken
off his painful shoes at about mile 10, and ran the rest of the Marathon
barefoot.

But I wouldn't say it was really very barefoot friendly.

Palos Verdes Marathon, really is nice, not just because of the barefoot friendly
course, and the views from running along the coast, but it is an old-fashioned
type marathon, run by the Kiwanis Club for charity, (though it isn't very flat),
the registration is cheap (like half the big city marathons), it is the longest
running marathon in California, you should be able to place, easily, in the
top-500 (only about 200-300 runners in the marathon), you don't have to attend
any expo during the days before the event (saving on driving), and you don't get
a shirt, unless you finish! It is truly a finisher's shirt.

A barefoot runner (Vince Sweetser) placed 3rd overall in 1970, with a time of
2:37. So Palos Verdes Marathon actually has a long Running Barefoot history.
http://runningbarefoot.org/?p=691

Only one problem, is the last few miles, besides being mostly up hill (with a
short downhill finish), are mostly run on the shoulder of the road (open to
traffic) unless you finish really fast (which I've never done - my fastest was
3:37) - but there are some nice trails, even some occasional parks with grass,
parallel to the road, for some of that.

Have fun,
-barefoot ken bob

There is the Salt Lake City Marathon held in April. The course starts at the
Univ of Utah which is up on a bench above the city. It goes down a gentle hill
to the valley floor in the first mile and from there on it is all flat.

Any other May, June marathons that are flat and known good barefoot marathons?

By the way, Central Park, NYC is extremely barefoot friendly.  And even friendlier for anyone that emails me if you are visiting, I'll join you for a run and I'm a nice guy!!!

Surf City (at the time, Pacific Shoreline) Marathon was MY first barefoot ROAD marathon. And there is a dirt option next to the roughest section (about 1/4 to 1/2 mile), and even some grass options (unfortunately, kind of redundent, since it's next to some of the smoothest asphalt) for about a mile or two... Still, it makes for some nice variety.

The only other rough stuff is in Central Park (Huntington Beach, not New York City), and that isn't nearly as rough as the first year I ran this event - much of it has been repaved. Then, one short bit, about 50 meters, of course gravel alongside the road.

This is one of my favorite events, not just because it is near my home, but, I have run 2 of my 3 fastest marathons on this course, and, occasionally (pretty much, whenever I ask), I get a chance to speak at the expo about Running Barefoot.

There are nicer barefoot courses, as Michae said,

2009 December 13, Tucson Marathon wasn't too bad - though I seem to remember one barefoot runner stopping after 16 miles, due to bad blisters - and it was freezing (32F) at the start (Michae hid inside the bus, until the race began) - I ran the half-marathon.

Long Beach Marathon is pretty nice, but that was in October.

Palos Verdes Marathon is one of the smoothest barefoot courses (since they repaved a few years ago), but that's in May (we had 7 barefoot runners complete the course in 2005).

San Francisco is pleasant, I believe. But it's at the end of July (or occasionally the beginning of August)

2010 February 21 Pasadena Marathon, was pretty nice. I had almost forgot about this one. This year was the innaugural that almost wasn't. Originally scheduled for last November but got smoked out by the wildfires, it was postponed until March this year, when it rained really hard, but was still, as I recall, a nice course, and we had, at least 4 barefoot runners, Todd, Julian, Jim, and myself, and maybe more...

Thank you, Ken Bob. That is in fact what I'm doing. It's like relearning to walk all over again. I'm going out and walking 1-3 miles barefoot as long as there is not pain. I'm throwing some slow running in the mix with an eye on developing form and relaxing. It's actually kind of liberating to go out and just practice form. I've learned that for my mind and body, running and relaxing feel incompatible. My body is getting it much faster than my mind is. My mind keeps saying, hey wait a minute, shouldn't you be tensing here, etc.  It's all very good.

Thank you and all for the suggestions and encouragement. I can't wait to run my first barefoot race here in Southwest New Hampshire.

Hi John.

This is Atty. Jon from Philippines as well. I am more of lurker here but I enjoy the posts and the wisdom that goes with them. I too have been incorporating barefoot running in my training for ultras.

I hope to see you in one of the local races. Better still let’s run barefoot!

Hi guys! This is my first post here, I just want say HI! to fellow barefooters across the globe. I'm very new to barefoot running (about 2weeks young) and already doing 3km with none or only "minor" blisters that heal overnight. I guess I have to limit myself to 3km until I consistently get no more blisters. It really feels weird adopting a new running technique after years and years of incorrect form. I've really learned a lot from your posts, and learning more everyday as I try to apply what I've read. It's really a different experience. Like a number of people in this group, Chris McDougall's book piqued my curiosity about barefoot running and therefore led me to this group.... though I regularly see 70+ year old dudes barefoot on races who always kick my behind hahahaha! Now I really understand why they don't wear shoes!

I've decided to ditch my new shoes (bought the nike lunarglide+ and adidas supernova) REAL CRAP, hurts my knees and shins (something I've never experienced on my old shoes, which are of course no longer in production). Now I'm learning how to run, slowly, practicing the right technique, will probably lose some fitness during the transition, but hey... isn't it worth it to learn do to things the right way? :)

I have two toddlers, and now, the rule inside the house is "no shoes!" will be good for them in the long run. Their footstrike is my inspiration. :)

This message is getting long, so again I just want to say HI to you guys and yes, there are barefooters here in Manila ! Would be sweet to run with some of you guys when I visit the US !

well, okay, since the bus wasn't leaving i just stayed until they would kick me off, but never did, and then the event started, and i finally left the bus, no lines at the porta potties, and started after everyone else had crossed the line,  it was pretty cool... and even though it was 32 at the start, it was 50 by mile 2, the desert warms incredilbly fast...and it was my fastest barefoot marathon, cuz it was allllllllllll downhill.
and i don't really wear eye crutches, or contact lenses...

I kind of figured that, I listed some of the bad ones, as ones you might want to
avoid...

2009 November 15 Malibu International Marathon is supposed to be very barefoot
friendly (Barefoot Todd is the course director), but probably too soon for you -
this Sunday, and it is an inaugural, so no reports (other than Barefoot Todd).

2010 January 17 Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, Phoenix, is supposed to be barefoot
friendly, according to Barefoot Todd, and a few other barefooters who have run
it
http://www.rnraz.com

Surf City (at the time, Pacific Shoreline) Marathon was MY first barefoot ROAD
marathon. And there is a dirt option next to the roughest section (about 1/4 to
1/2 mile), and even some grass options (unfortunately, kind of redundent, since
it's next to some of the smoothest asphalt) for about a mile or two... Still, it
makes for some nice variety.

The only other rough stuff is in Central Park (Huntington Beach, not New York
City), and that isn't nearly as rough as the first year I ran this event - much
of it has been repaved. Then, one short bit, about 50 meters, of course gravel
alongside the road.

This is one of my favorite events, not just because it is near my home, but, I
have run 2 of my 3 fastest marathons on this course, and, occasionally (pretty
much, whenever I ask), I get a chance to speak at the expo about Running
Barefoot.

There are nicer barefoot courses, as Michae said,

2009 December 13, Tucson Marathon wasn't too bad - though I seem to remember one
barefoot runner stopping after 16 miles, due to bad blisters - and it was
freezing (32F) at the start (Michae hid inside the bus, until the race began) -
I ran the half-marathon.
http://www.tucsonmarathon.com

Long Beach Marathon is pretty nice, but that was in October.

Palos Verdes Marathon is one of the smoothest barefoot courses (since they
repaved a few years ago), but that's in May (we had 7 barefoot runners complete
the course in 2005).

San Francisco is pleasant, I believe. But it's at the end of July (or
occasionally the beginning of August)

Have fun,
-barefoot ken bob

2010 February 21 Pasadena Marathon, was pretty nice. I had almost forgot about
this one. This year was the innaugural that almost wasn't. Originally scheduled
for last November but got smoked out by the wildfires, it was postponed until
March this year, when it rained really hard, but was still, as I recall, a nice
course, and we had, at least 4 barefoot runners, Todd, Julian, Jim, and myself,
and maybe more...

I wonder if it wasn't like this:

Phidippides comes panting in to Athens and collapses, almost dead from exhaustion. A reporter for the local Athens Tribune hurries over and interviews him. "Where did you run from, Phidippides? " he asks. "Iera Polis Messologhiou" gasps Phidippides. "How do you spell that?" asks the reporter. "Um, uh, er - screw it! Just put down 'Marathon!'"

Before swearing off all running, or at least walking, I would focus on
technique, not distance, for a while. You can practice most of the concepts of
running barefoot technique, while walking, or even standing:

Yanni,

Actually, you folks in England (well, your king, anyway) standardized the
"Marathon" distance at 26.2 (42.195Km) relatively recently (1921).

I suppose it depends on the perspective of the original story-teller
(presumably, in Athens).

But, my guess, If I was in Athens at the time Pheidippedes came running in, I
wouldn't be saying, "Pheidippides just ran all the way to Athens!" I would be
saying, "Pheidippides just ran all the way from Marathon!" And, even
Pheidippides would be telling us (before he croaked) that he just ran from
"Marathon". And thus, I would guess, Athenians (and Pheidippides), telling the
story, would be calling that distance a "Marathon distance"... While, it would
take another runner a few more hours (at least) to ran back and tell the story
to Marathon residents, by which time, the run will have already been established
as the legendary "Marathon" run ...

Hi Rick and others,
My Greek is too limited to translate - it's good enough to get me into trouble,
but not out of trouble!
The Athens "Marathon" (Or shouldn't that be Athens "Athens" - see below) looks
irrisistable to me. Count me in! Particularly if there is a strong presence from
you guys in the New World..

However, let's no emulate Phidippides too closely: (EG expiring at the finishing
line; running an ultramarathon distances the week before his "Marathon" -
including a "Spartathlon", and also, in his wearing of sandals)

Finally, One thing puzzles me - since he was running FROM Marathon TO Athens why
do we call a 26.2 mile run a "Marathon" and not an "Athens"?

Barefoot runner since December 2004.

Hey all,

Just wanted to report that In ran 2 5k's this past weekend and 1 race on
Saturday had 3 barefoot runners. It was the Run For All Ages race in Wakefield,
MA. Ben Ibey and Jim Paisner joined me in Wakefield for a 5k around lake
Quinnapowett on a warm November morning. Ben drove from NH to make the race and
did well at 21:33 (6:57 mile) placing 1st in the barefoot division. It was a
really good feeling to be with other barefoot runners as usual and we all had
different times so we did not run together, but met after the race and chatted
and had apre race food. Hope this weather holds out.

The next day I traveled to Boston and ran the Luv 2Run 5K along the Charles
River. It was beautiful out and close to 65 degrees. I was the only barefoot
runner at the race and it was surprising how many people have never seen a
barefoot runner and how many people have not heard about the Born To Run book. I
did manage to have a gal tell me that her friend "Jill" is just beginning to get
into barefoot running and the dig the idea. My time was 23:21.

All said, the weather was perfect and I like running with other barefoot runners
more even though I don't mind running barefoot alone.

Hi John.

This is Atty. Jon from Philippines as well. I am more of lurker here but I enjoy the posts and the wisdom that goes with them. I too have been incorporating barefoot running in my training for ultras.

I hope to see you in one of the local races. Better still let’s run barefoot!

Jon
