I've been working really hard to figure out why I'm still not picking my feet up right most of the time and developing callouses. Thanks to yesterday's Yoga class, I think I know what it is. My calves, which have always been overdeveloped (probably from growing up on snow skis), are shockingly tight or short. I simply don't have the flexibility in my ankles to keep my foot flat as my body passes over it, especially if I keep my knees well bent. I've never been a flexible person (genetic, not even the athletes in my family are flexible) so it is going to take me a long time to get the flexibility I need to run properly. Probably a lifetime of wearing heels, along with the arthritis, has contributed to this too. I know what to do, lots of stretching, continuing with Yoga, and continuing to focus on my form, but at least I now know what the problem is.
I'm wondering if women have a harder time transitioning to BFR than men because we wear higher heels. Which would also beg the question, do women that normally wear Birkenstocks, flip-flops, etc. have an easier time of it?
