If it's too littered with glass and crud to pick your way through, then do what we occasionally done on some otherwise barefoot-friendly events and take a push broom to it before you run.  It's amazing how many people say, "thank you,"  "way to go" etc. without even knowing why we're doing it.  It will be interesting to see the reaction in NYC.
