You'll find the diagram on the legal target zones on page 13 of the current rule
set. The "outside the bra straps" (as Hambone calls it) is not new. This has
always been a legal target zone.

We'll have to agree to disagree about whether this should or should not be a
legal target zone. Me personally, I have a rotator cuff injury. I can take
really hard hits, but if you catch the back of my left shoulder legally, in just
the right (wrong?) spot, you can crumple me to my knees in pain. Its just part
of the game. I applaud an opponent who pulls it off.

There's also a tiny portion of the side and hips which can force forward
movement in a legal block.

But, basically, a hit landed in the armpit from behind is legal and can legally
move an opponent forward - which is a move that can instigate a cut track
penalty on your opponent.

Absolutely. Illegal contact which forces a penalty on an opponent or in any
other way has a major impact on the game should at least be a major. Gross
illegal contact should earn a skater ejection.

> It is bad enough that a skater at the front of the pack may be blocked from
the side, without being passed, and knocked out of bounds, and even though they
were ahead of the blocker when blocked, if they come back in bounds in front of
the blocker, they have committed a cut the track major. In essence, they have
cut from the front of the pack to the front of the pack at least by using the
hips in front of hips rules. But of course there is an inconsistency in the
rules for blockers and blocking compared to jammers passing opposing skaters.
>

No inconsistency between blockers and jammers at all. Blockers who "cut" the
front most skater in a pack or more than two blockers also commit a major
penalty. Cutting one blocker is a minor - jammers and blockers alike.

It would be easier as a sports enthusiast to grasp this move not from the
perspective of disadvantage to the receiving player, but as a strategic move by
the initiating skater. Often times the job of us blockers is to herd skaters
from the front into the pack - be they jammers or blockers. This is a move which
can change our status - and it is NOT easy. It takes practice and skill to force
a cut track and not leave the boundary of the track, go out of play, or fall on
a knee.

It takes a lot of game and pack awareness to not cut - but also to know the most
effective time and location to return to the pack. I've watched poor-game-sense
jammers get taken out by a blocker out of play to the front of the pack (a major
on the blocker - but referees can be slow to call) and then come in behind the
entire pack. They don't have to do that. In order to maintain one's "ahead of"
status through forcing a cut track, one must stay skating and in play. All it
takes is a smart opposing blocker to block me out of bounds or to touch a knee
and presto magico, the person I forced out doesn't need to come in behind me any
more.

Slightly complicated? Not really. Remember, this is part of the finesse that
makes this a real sport and not just a measure of combined brute and speed. Real
athletes must THINK!

> This is of course is not the only inconsistency in the rules. As I saw last
night in a super jam, the initial passes were counted as points. This is the
only time an initial pass should be counted as points in a bout. But
considering how some refs seem to have trouble not counting initial passes as
points occasionally, I think it would be better to have the rules as consistant
as possible so that people could say an initial pass never counts for points.
>

Initial passes should NOT be counted as points EXCEPT in overtime. Period. I
have no idea what a "super jam" is.

I too have seen referees mistakenly count initial passes during regular game
play. Its wrong, annoying, inconsistent, and a travesty to the sport. There are
a number of checks in our system. First, the scorekeeper NSO should know this is
not possible. If they are using the WFTDA scorekeeping sheet, they'd know to
tell their jammer referee that there is no score in the initial pass because the
scorekeeper would know it was still initial pass. Benches should have their own
stats tracker watching BOTH scores. If you don't oppose scores immediately
following the jam, you own the mistake. Not only does that include not accepting
first pass scores from your opponent, that means making sure your jammer referee
picked up the ghost points from your opponents either in the box or not in play
at the end of the jam (both at the ending whistle as well as when your jammer
reached the back of the pack).

Finally, the head referee should be on top of things and checking in with
referees and scorekeepers as well as all the officials. Captains and Alternates
should be communicating with the Head Referee when things are going wrong as
soon as they know.

The only consolation for a referee who counts initial passes is that jammer
referees are switched at the period change.

The "some referees" who are counting initial pass other than the extremely rare
overtime situation, should be evaluated as such and should get more training
before being given the job of jammer referee again.

In a bout with huge momentum swings, the Slaughterers utilized a late scoring
run to pick up their third consecutive Dallas Derby Devils championship as they
beat the High Seas Hotties 64-57. In the Consolation bout, the Death Row
Rumblers pulled out an exciting victory in overtime to beat the Suicide Shifters
81-77 Saturday in North Richland Hills, Texas.

The Slaughterers opened up the championship bout impressively shutting out the
Hotties in the first three jams. The Shocker and Herassiz Mine would score five
point jams, and Miley Virus would add a four point jam in the second jam of the
evening. The defending champs took a 14-0 lead after their jammers took three
straight lead jammer statuses.

But the Hotties would counter with lead jammer status twice with Hot 4 Teacher
scoring a 3-0 jam and Strawberry Deathcake adding a 5-0 jam in the fifth jam
making the score 14-8. Miley Virus took an 8-4 jam in the sixth jam for the
Slaughterers and the lead was 24-8.

The Hotties got into jammer penalty trouble in the last two jams of the half.
Miley Virus took an 8-0 jam for the Slaughterers. While Hot 4 Teacher gained
lead jammer status for the final jam of the half, she was sent to the penalty
box late in the jam after scoring a pack pass, and The Shocker scored four
points as the Slaughterers took a 38-20 lead at halftime.

Fouls were troubling both teams as penalties forced the first jam of the final
period to start with the minimum number of skaters on the track. The
Slaughterers had two blockers in the penalty box, but the High Seas Hotties had
two blockers and a jammer in the sin bin. The Slaughterers picked up a 4-0
advantage in the first jam, but the Hotties picked up a moral victory in
limiting Herassiz Is Mine to four points. The defending champions lead increased
to 42-20, but it would be quite a while before the Slaughterers would score
again in the second half.

Strawberry Deathcake scored a 3-0 jam in the second jam which was followed up by
a big 8-0 jam by Hot 4 Teacher. Suddenly the team in red was within 11 points.
Strawberry Deathcake would pull off the biggest jam of the bout with a 15-0
score, a three-pack-pass jamming romp as the Hotties blockers would slow down a
depleted Slaughterer blocking pack. Suddenly, the Hotties had a 46-42 lead when
they had not even sniffed an advantage on the scoreboard since before the bout
began.

With continuing problems for the Slaughterers jammers in the penalty box,
powerful pivot Rink Panther would score a 6-0 jam for the team in red, and
followed it up with a 5-0 jam after coming out of the penalty box in the sixth
jam to extend the Hotties lead to 57-42.

Then momentum, would rear its seemingly capricious head for the Hotties and
their fans in attendance at NYTex Sports Centre. The Slaughterers' Hard Drive
caught opposing jammer Hot 4 Teacher on the outside of the track with a hard
block, and drove her through the ten foot safety lane outside of the track
boundary, and into the announcers table in turn two. Play was halted as medical
personnel tended to the all star jammer for the Hotties. While Hot 4 Teacher
headed back to the Hotties bench without a serious injury, she was out of the
next three jams by rule, and did not have an opportunity to return to the bout
with very limited time left on the clock.

Herassiz Is Mine would take advantage of a penalty to the Hotties jammer when
that jammer was sent to the penalty box, and scored a huge 9-0 jam for the
Slaughterers narrowing the margin to 57-51 in favor of the team in red. A
debate with the officials was raised by the Hotties as they felt Herassiz is
Mine had a fourth minor called on her while jamming.

However, Miley Virus would start the final jam of the bout on the jammer line
for the Slaughterers with the Hotties' jammer still being timed in the penalty
box. After Miley Virus scored a pack pass, another penalty was called on the
Hotties jammer who had come out of the penalty box, and it was just a matter of
time until the speed skating jammer for the Slaughterers would take the scoring
lead.

The High Seas Hotties claimed a minor fourth foul was actually called for back
blocking that should have sent Miley Virus to the penalty box and brought the
Hotties jammer out of the box. But if the refs don't call a penalty, or send a
skater off the track, then a fourth minor foul didn't officially happen, and
Miley Virus added eight more points before the final clock ran out.

The Slaughterers started their night of long celebration with a 64-57 final
victory. The Slaughterers had good reason to celebrate their third consecutive
championship, since they were considered underdogs by many of the Dallas Derby
Devils' fans before the bout.

The top scorers for the Slaughterers were Miley Virus with 33 points, Herassiz
Mine with 22 points and The Shocker with nine points. The leading blockers for
the "threepeating" champions were Hard Drive, Roll'er Over, Keltic Kamikaze and
The Pusher.

The leading scorers for the High Seas Hotties were Strawberry Deathcake with 27
points, Hot 4 Teacher with 19 points and Rink Panther with 11 points. Top
blockers for Hotties were Juicy J, Lickity Splittail, Barooski, and Mona
Bruiser.

The consolation bout started off very evenly with all star jammers Postal Penny
of the Death Row Rumblers and Anita Riot of the Suicide Shifters each scoring
four points. Heike De Skirts scored a 9-0 jam in the second jam to give the
Rumblers a 13-4 lead after two jams. Postal Penny would take advantage of a
Shifter jammer penalty in the sixth jam scoring a 12-3 advantage, and giving the
team in orange and black a 29-11 lead.

Jamie Lee Hurtus jammed for the Shifters to start the eighth jam of the first
half, but handed the jammer helmet cover to pivot Anita Riot who proceeded to
put a 9-1 scoring jam on the board and narrow the Rumblers lead to 35-23.
Postal Penny scored a 5-4 jam over Sweet Baby Jane in the ninth jam of the half,
and with a scoreless final jam of the half, the Death Row Rumblers had a 40-27
lead at halftime.

The first jam of the second half would be huge for the Suicide Shifters as Anita
Riot scored a 21-0 jam with the Rumblers having a jammer in the penalty box. A
stunned crowd had seen a 13 point lead for the Rumblers become a 48-40 lead for
the Suicide Shifters.

The team in orange and black began chipping away. A 5-0 jam by Postal Penny in
the fifth jam narrowed the Shifter lead to 51-47. A 9-5 jam by Postal Penny
lessened the game margin to 68-66 in favor of the Suicide Shifters. A big final
jam by Heike De Skirts appeared to give a 5-2 jamming advantage for the
Rumblers. She made a pack pass, and the opposing jammer was in the penalty box,
but the officials only gave her four points so the bout was tied 70-70 after
time had expired.

As the game began, all star jammers Postal Penny and Anita Riot were matched up
against each other for the overtime super jam. The Rumblers jammer Postal Penny
would break out of the pack first scoring four points on the initial pass, with
Anita Riot not too far behind her. But as Postal Penny was working on her third
pack pass, and the Shifters jammer was working on her second pack pass, the
Death Row Rumblers blockers came up big. Suture Sally and Professor Kaos put a
double team block on Anita Riot, and the Shifter jammer went down in the middle
of the track. She could not get up and the jam was called off because of
injury. Postal Penny scored an official 11 points and Anita Riot scored an
official seven points, and the Death Row Rumblers picked an amazing 81-77
overtime victory.

The top scorer for the Death Row Rumblers was Postal Penny with 51 points.
Heike De Skirt added 22 points, and captain Debbie Downer scored seven points.
Leading blockers for the third place team was Professor Kaos, Suture Sally, Desi
Deckem, and Nikki Please.

The leading scorer in the bout and the night was Anita Riot with 53 points.
Jamie Lee Hurtus added 13 points, and Sweet Baby Jane chipped in with 11 points
for the Suicide Shifters. Top blockers for the team in green were Selma Bodie,
V-Twin Vixen, Helena De Stroy, and Nitro Jen.

In my opinion, the back of any portion of a skaters body, shoulder, or arm,
should not be a legal hitting zone. The side of the shoulder or arm should be
considered a legal hitting zone. If this is in the rules, that the back of the
shoulder or arm is a legal hitting zone, then there is a legal back block, which
by rule in my opinion should not exist.

In another note, if illegal contact does force an opposing skater out of bounds,
considering the disadvantage that that skater is put into, a major may be called
for the illegal block that forces the opposing blocker either insider out
outside of the track. That's because the impact becomes major when the opposing
skater is put in that situation.

It is bad enough that a skater at the front of the pack may be blocked from the
side, without being passed, and knocked out of bounds, and even though they were
ahead of the blocker when blocked, if they come back in bounds in front of the
blocker, they have committed a cut the track major. In essence, they have cut
from the front of the pack to the front of the pack at least by using the hips
in front of hips rules. But of course there is an inconsistency in the rules
for blockers and blocking compared to jammers passing opposing skaters.

The Slaughterers defeated the High Seas Hotties 64-57 winning on the last jam of
the bout for their third consecutive championship.

In the Consolation bout the Death Row Rumblers deafeated Suicide Shifters 81-77
in overtime (the crazy Superjam the WFTDA came up with a couple of years ago).

My reports in Houston indicate that Houston Roller Derby defeated the Minnesota
Rollergirls 103-76 in Shenandoah (just north of the Woodlands), Texas. Thanks

I responded to this earlier Saturday. Good point! If you think about it about
as many bouts (throw in double headers) will be run nationwide this weekend as
there will be major league baseball games. 30 games at about 1.5 bouts per
event equals 45 bouts. That is equal to 15 major league games times Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday games. That's 45 for both sports.

Supa here, one of the announcers who handled this game (TARG vs ICT). It was a
very exciting bout, and in myopinion what derby is all about!! It was a back
and forth game the whole night. The last jam(going into) of the night had TARG
ahead by six points. Pooter Smacker of ICT was on theline against Switchblade
from TARG. Pooter got lead and scored five points calling off the jam. TARG's
jammer ended in the box without scoring. Pooter mistakingly called the jam
after her mental math had given ICT the game(which was not the case however).
TARG then beat ICT for the 1st time with final score of 114-113. As an
announcer, it was a blast calling this game, especiallywith Moose Ondaluce!

Yep! She is amazing and I am still trying to figure out a way to get her to
unretire. I know she needs a rest, but I couldn't believe my eyes from two
weeks ago with her splitting front wall after front wall. Many jammers try to
force blockers out beyond 20 feet, but I think she had gotten by every wall she
needed to go up against by 10 or 15 feet at the most. However, after ten
straight lead jammers status in a row, even super heroes get tired and have to
go to the penalty box.

Subject: [RollerDerbyIsSport] Keeping the Jammer Out of the Box

With the new rules 4.0 WFTDA, jammers should be able to avoid cutting the track if they understand the rules, and are mentally prepared to get off their skates on the inside of the track and headed towards the boundary line and re-entering the track, and can skate clockwise if knocked out of bounds on the outside of the track to get behind trapping blockers.

What I have seen since the institution of the new rules in games is that suddenly the jammers are having to deal with back blocking issues again. A lot of jammers will accumate back blocking (ok, the official penalty is probably blocking from behind) minors. What is stunning is watching jammers barrel into blockers from behind and if they knock them down, or knock them to the inside of the track, or cause a situation that would gain a substantial advantage, the jammer is probably headed off the track with a major.

So how important is it that jammers stay out of the penalty box? Well, at WFTDA nationals last year the team that went to the box the most lost their bouts in that tournament. If I use the example of the Texas Rollergirls, they were actually beating Gotham late in the bout, until they suffered a couple of major penalties to their jammers. Gotham was able to take advantage of those jammers in the box and score a significant number of points during those opportunities, and come from behind to win the bout.

So how do you stay out of the box if you're a jammer? Unless you are a derby superhero who can split blocking walls at a single bound, you might want to wait for some help from a blocking teammate. Or if help doesn't arrive, you might want to move side to side, and see if the skaters in front of you can hold their wall while trying to find you at the same time. And if that split in the wall occurs, then hit the space if it is there. But a lot of very good jammers will not get themselves into trouble, and will not force action if stymied by a two or three person blocking wall.

So a jammer has to walk a very fine line of agression. They need to know when not to force action that might get them into foul trouble. And yet they also need to know when to take advantage of openings. Good blocking teammates can be a huge help to jammers, as most jammers will tell you.

With the new rules 4.0 WFTDA, jammers should be able to avoid cutting the track
if they understand the rules, and are mentally prepared to get off their skates
on the inside of the track and headed towards the boundary line and re-entering
the track, and can skate clockwise if knocked out of bounds on the outside of
the track to get behind trapping blockers.

What I have seen since the institution of the new rules in games is that
suddenly the jammers are having to deal with back blocking issues again. A lot
of jammers will accumate back blocking (ok, the official penalty is probably
blocking from behind) minors. What is stunning is watching jammers barrel into
blockers from behind and if they knock them down, or knock them to the inside of
the track, or cause a situation that would gain a substantial advantage, the
jammer is probably headed off the track with a major.

So how important is it that jammers stay out of the penalty box? Well, at WFTDA
nationals last year the team that went to the box the most lost their bouts in
that tournament. If I use the example of the Texas Rollergirls, they were
actually beating Gotham late in the bout, until they suffered a couple of major
penalties to their jammers. Gotham was able to take advantage of those jammers
in the box and score a significant number of points during those opportunities,
and come from behind to win the bout.

So how do you stay out of the box if you're a jammer? Unless you are a derby
superhero who can split blocking walls at a single bound, you might want to wait
for some help from a blocking teammate. Or if help doesn't arrive, you might
want to move side to side, and see if the skaters in front of you can hold their
wall while trying to find you at the same time. And if that split in the wall
occurs, then hit the space if it is there. But a lot of very good jammers will
not get themselves into trouble, and will not force action if stymied by a two
or three person blocking wall.

So a jammer has to walk a very fine line of agression. They need to know when
not to force action that might get them into foul trouble. And yet they also
need to know when to take advantage of openings. Good blocking teammates can be
a huge help to jammers, as most jammers will tell you.

Thank you for the information! That puts the number of bouts up to around 30,
which in modern roller derby terms may not be the busiest weekends around, but
remember that the most games there can be on any given weekday for Majior League
baseball is 30.

I agree entirely. Way to go Dockyard skaters and AFCU (that may not be the name
of the credit union because I'm going on memory)! I wonder if Houston Roller
Derby could do a few commercials like that that could make Reliant Stadium,
Minute Maid Park, or the Toyota Center. That seems almost like a pipe dream.
But it is a great way to promote and make roller derby more visible.

Wow, love the spots. We really need more of this sort of thing happening around the country.

Mr Platz

About three weeks ago, my hometown Dockyard Derby Dames traveled down to Olympia and shot some commercials for America's Credit Union. After 8 hours of skating (and shooting), they finished 4 commercials.

These commercials will be shown not only on local cable television around here, but also in movie theaters and at both Safeco Field before Mariners games and Qwest Field before Seahawks games! Of course, I'm most excited about the Seahawk games since not only will 67,000 people get to see these but I will also get to jump around like a lunatic yelling at anyone within the distance of my voice "THOSE ARE MY FRIENDS"!!!

Anyway, I posted them on my blog. Just click on www.myspace.com/all_bout_derby to watch them. I'm not just saying this...they are REALLY well done!

Subject: Why I Will Never Be On a WFTDA Committee
philar_72

Besides the fact that I am not a member of a league.....!

I can't imagine anyone putting up with my rants. I could probably make some
fairly reasonable suggestions concerning the rules, and I could probably live
with the fact that those suggestions might not be agreed to at the committee
level or league membership level.

But what really irritates me is the marketing that goes on for roller derby as a
whole in the WFTDA. First of all, the tournament process needs to be much more
transparent so that skaters, volunteers and fans who are interested in seeing
their favorite all star team make it to regional tournaments can follow
relatively closely the process of teams being invited to regional tournaments.
When hosts of tournaments are announced, people should know how many teams will
be in the tournament, and roughly what the brackets for that tournament will
look like. And this should not be just some special people within the
organization or a few favorite outsiders!

Also I would hope that the WFTDA would form a marketing committee that could
help leagues promote interleague bouts. Now some may say, well all our bouts
are interleague bouts, and this point doesn't apply to you. Many leagues have
their best attended bouts at league events. And I know that if I go to an
event, and don't get to see at least 80% of a league's skaters participating in
bouts, I am very disappointed. And so many fans follow their league rivalries
with great passion and fanaticism. You probably understand the word fan came
from "fanatic."

Ultimately if roller derby is to become a mainstream, and right now I am not
sure a majority of the skaters want it to be mainstream sport, probably the best
way to promote derby with sports writers and possibly even radio and television
stations, it is to promote these interleague bouts. My feeling is that if a
local newspaper sees this weekend that Houston is hosting Minnesota or that the
highly ranked Windy City Rollers is hosting the powerful Charm City All Stars
from Baltimore at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, at least with the sport writers
and broadcasters, this will look more like a legitimate sport. And if writers
and broadcasters starting thinking that derby is a legitimate sport, the more
likely they are to publicize it. And then more sports fans might hear about
derby and become interested in seeing a bout.

But if leagues hold what in essence is a glorified scrimmage, even or especially
if it is a WFTDA sanctioned bout, what is sometimes called a closed bout, that
is no way to say to the sports media that roller derby is a legitimate sport.
It is a way to say to sports media that this is an exclusive sport, nothing
really more than a club sport, although I am thinking that rugby matches and
rowing events aren't usually closed to the public. Perhaps events like fencing
may be closed to the public, but I wouldn't know because I only see it during
the Olympics.

Now I will say if leagues don't use their normal venue for an interleague bout,
and have very limited seating, but offer some tickets to the public that is not
a closed bout. It may be a sold out bout, but it is not a closed bout. My
feeling is that in a WFTDA sanctioned bout, that bout should at least be
partially open to the public and roller derby fans. That way if something
strange happens in a bout, the public will at least be there to bear witness and
it won't be one team's word against another potentially.

So even if I were strongly associated with a league and that even seems unlikely
to happen although I certainly work with many leagues at the level of writing
about those leagues, I doubt I would ever be asked to serve on a WFTDA
committee. Apparently I just have too much sports background, and marketing
background, and I'm not sure that would be tolerated at the national level.
Then again, I do know some reasonable people in the WFTDA that are certainly
smart enough to have an open mind.

I suppose I could also write something about lowering the price of tickets
during a recession, but this topic is probably not the place for that issue.
Maybe I'll come up with it at a later time.

About three weeks ago, my hometown Dockyard Derby Dames traveled down to Olympia
and shot some commercials for America's Credit Union. After 8 hours of skating
(and shooting), they finished 4 commercials.

These commercials will be shown not only on local cable television around here,
but also in movie theaters and at both Safeco Field before Mariners games and
Qwest Field before Seahawks games! Of course, I'm most excited about the Seahawk
games since not only will 67,000 people get to see these but I will also get to
jump around like a lunatic yelling at anyone within the distance of my voice
"THOSE ARE MY FRIENDS"!!!

Anyway, I posted them on my blog. Just click on www.myspace.com/all_bout_derby
to watch them. I'm not just saying this...they are REALLY well done!

Hot for Teacher's birthday was yesterday and Keltic's hubby's b-days is today as well.

I'm actually 32 which is AWESOME because I originally thought I would be turning 33.  So in my mind, I gained a year. Woohoo!  But poor Mr Keltic...he miscaculated and is actually one more year older than what he thought.  Maybe I got his year...who knows. :-)

And I'm cracking up over here because you said "something really ridiculous" in reference to being born in 1985, because that's when my g-friend was born. hahahaha  That's funny!

Oh and I doubt highly that the Shifters will be singing birthday anything's to me on Saturday. :-)  At least not until the afterparty.

Well happy birthday Professor Kaos. So, is this your 24th birthday? That would put your born in 1985 or something really ridiculous. Are the Suicide Shifters going to sing happy birthday on Saturday. I noticed somebody else from the Derby Devils has an August 30th birthday.

It is a good opportunity for the Death Row Rumblers to win their first league trophy ever. But the Suicide Shifters have been playing tough bouts all season long, and the team in green will be out to surprise you. I expect both bouts will be amazingly close.

Well if everyone's in agreement...lets do that...just skip the rest of the week.  Who do we have to see to make that happen?!?  I'm like a spastic A.D.D. 4-yr old in a toy store...I'm so excited!
