It was actually after the Windy City/Texas game. H-bomb decided to taunt the
Texas fans in the stands and I shattered the clipboard on the bench in front of
me. It was tough enough taking the overtime loss, but to be taunted on it after
the fact was more than I or my clipboard could take.

My understanding is a lot of the Texas Rollergirls will be making a final
appearance in league games on Sunday. I think I can say that quite of few of my
best skating friends will be skating their last official league bout. For me
that will be a sad moment because I have really enjoyed watching these skaters
in Austin since I started watching derby in 2006.

Hey Phil, What a great idea! I think it was yesterday or maybe the day before that I posted my opinion that our RollerDerby blogs are vital for the survival of this sport. But no matter how great their potential if we do not use them to communicate to share problems and solutions to problems they are limited in their ability to help RollerDeby to grow.

What I am trying to say folks, is that your problem or your idea for a solution to a problem could have an impact world wide. Look at it this way; RollerDerby is now world wide. We have leagues not only in The U.S. but Canada, England, Germany, Australia and New Zealand. Never think for a minute that your idea or solution to a problem could not have an impact world wide for RollerDerby.

Phil, your website is now 900 members strong. It is another perfect example how powerful our blogs can be. I have read post on your website from all over the world. It boggles the mind to think of the potential that our RollerDerby blogs can have. But as I said in my post of a couple of days ago, they are only powerful if we take the time to use them and SHARE! You give a perfect example in your post today. You noticed that there was a good way for fans and skaters in our area to save money on airline tickets if they wanted to go to The Nationals in Philadelphia. Now coming up with ideas like that is exactly what all of us that care about this sport should be doing.

Our newest league in Corpus Christ is another example. They had a problem and they used your blog to ask for help. And boy did they get it. The girls from the valley of Texas responded, so did the girls from San Antonio who brought some of their support people and the girls from Dallas who drove over seven hundred miles and back to help. Now this could only happen because we have the means now to distribute information accurately and quickly because of our blogs.

I wish that everyone could have been in Corpus Christie to see what I saw. Everyone, and I mean everyone, working together to see that our newest league is successful. The wonderful bonding effect of so many girls not only skating as opposing traditional teams but so many skaters from other teams skating together as members of the same team had such an extraordinary positive effect that it is hard to express it in words. The comradeship and love was palatable, you could feel it in the air. It was very exciting!

One other group that was there to help was a number of support people. Especially from San Antonio. I was thrilled to see how the Corpus Christie girls reacted to these support people. For a new league it was obvious to me that they seemed to almost intuitively understand how important to RollerDerby these support people can be. We were all treated like members of the team. In essence the Corpus Christi trip was almost a mystical experience. I will always do anything I can to help the Corpus Christi girls because of the way I was treated.

So what I am trying to say in a round-about way is that the Corpus Christi girls success was helped in a significant way because they saw the advantage of a RollerDery blog to share a problem and ask for help and again, boy did they git it!

Now this gets around to your idea for a contest Phil. Its a good idea. It is a way for all of us to understand what a wonderful and powerful tool our blogs are and have some fun at the same time. I want to contribute too. I will contribute $50 for a prize in your contest. You can give it as one prize or break it up into first, second and third prizes or do it anyway you like, I don't care. The main point is that I am firmly convinced that our blogs are vital to the future of RollerDerby and it is extremely important that everyone understands that and supports them. Love to you all...Honey Man.

Well, $238 on a Friday and a Monday travel is good to Philly, and I have to talk my boss into it.  But I think I can do that.  I live on Priceline so I know the drill. $248 for four nights in downtown Atlanta at the Sheraton via Priceline is not too bad. Honestly, derby gives me an excuse to travel and that makes it extra fun.

I went to http://www.bing. com/travel/ , and got 2 round trip tickets from Houston to Philly for a total, with taxes and everything, for $355. If you pick 'off' days instead of the common days, it's cheaper. We decided to make a vacation out of it and are going from Tues to Tues. For $178 each, it's worth it!!

I also got great hotel prices bidding on http://www.pricelin e.com/. I got us a 3.5 star hotel (normally $270) for $100 per night! When you bid you don't get to pick the hotel, but you do get to pick the area. And this hotel looks sweet! And is not far from Convention Center.

So you can say that I am Super Super excited about going to Nationals this year! I wish we could go to the Regionals too, but we can't.

And if it is going on in Austin to Philly, I bet there are several other cities where there are just as good flights for that time of year to the WFTDA National tournament in Philly. I thought you might want to know, just in case!

Now if I were associated with an established league and wanted to get league
rookies more opportunities to skate, especially since a lot of leagues will be
sending out their travel teams this time of year, it seems like a rookie team
skating against Crude City could be a great derby trip.

Of course, I'm probably mainly looking for an excuse to take a trip to Corpus
Christi, lay out on the beach or go fishing, and then head for derby, maybe
making a weekend of it. I'm just saying, I wanna go to Corpus Christi for
derby! A Friday, Saturday, Sunday trip is not out of the realm of possibility
if only a team will go down there and skate these dates.

Not only that, but the NCAA actually takes reporters into workshops where they
go through the NCAA basketball selection process, to show them the kind of
decisions that are made. Not only is this done before hand, but interviews are
conducted with selection committee members on why specific decisions were made
after the fact. This is a very transparent process.

As bad as the BCS polling system is (college football's bowl system selection
process including a national championship game), it is also fairly obvious, as
flawed as it may be, concerning what the process is. I will not say the WFTDA
ranking system is perfect. I would have probably ranked a few South Central
teams differently that I have seen skate compared to where they were ranked, but
I am not overly critical of that system because it involves subjective judgments
that are not extremely easy. It's just when the rankings are made, and the
tourny seeding system seems to negate any advantages gained by the rankings that
bothers me.

And if the NCAA basketball tournament process is extremely transparent, which I
think it is, and fairly understandable, and the tournament seedings are a pretty
hard and fast system largely accepted by a huge number of high-energy sports
fans; I just don't think that selection process is a real target by either
sports fans or reporters. This seeding system and even the ranking process
that goes along with it is accepted and not really question by anyone, except
perhaps those trying to sell a different system.
