One for today to Hurt Reynolds in Seattle. Not only is he a
scorekeeper for Rat City, but he is a genuine friend of roller derby.
Also, tomorrow I would like to wish a happy birthday to Ivanna S.
Pankin. What a schedule she and the Sin City Neanderdolls have.
Yesterday they played Los Angeles in an interleague bout, and next
Sunday they are scheduled to play Atlanta in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
And ironically I can say I met them both in Seattle at Bumberbout!

Happy Birthday from Austin, Texas!

It's Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 talking about Southern Brawl! For all
of you trivia types out there, did you know that Barbara Feldon who
played Agent 99 on Get Smart was actually taller than Don Adams who
played the gootball agent Smart?

Anyway it was fun watching the movie talking about Southern Brawl
although I'm not sure it was really Don Adams and Barbara Feldon.
Would you believe a couple of Broadway actors? Would you beleive a
couple of actors from Houston's repretory theater? Would you believe a
rollergirl and her boyfriend in a used car showroom? Sorry about that
Chief!

While there may be some rollergirl leagues showing up at bars with
some of their favorite bands tonight, I generally don't put those up
as a weekend event unless it is a major fundraiser or a team or league
party. That being said, here are a list of some of the roller derby
events going on this weekend.

The Tallahassee Rollergirls hold their first bout ever on Saturday at
the North Florid Fairgrounds. As is often the case with first bouts,
I don't have any team names, but I do know that the doors open at 6
p.m. and the bout starts at 7 o'clock. Tickets are $8 or $10
advance. Halftime entertainment will be presented by Lucky Scars.
For more information go to www.tallhasseerollergirls.com.

In Denver, The Rocky Mountain Roller Girls will host the Duke City all-
stars from Albuquerque. The time listed on the poster is 6:30 p.m.
but I can't tell if that is the time of the doors opening or the bout
time. The event will be held at Bladium Sports Bar, 2400 Central Park
Blvd, Denver, Colorado. Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door.
The Swanks provide music at halftime. To buy tickets online see:
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/7191

Saturday evening in Las Vegas, the Angel Derby Girls from Los Angeles
will be hosted by the Sin City Neanderdolls at Flamingo Banks. The
bout it scheduled to start at the out the outdoor facility at 7 p.m.
Expect temperatures to be around 90 degrees at bout time, but of
course, it will be a dry 90 degrees. Flamingo Banks is located on
West Flamingo Blvd, not far from the famous Las Vegas Strip and about
1 1/2 miles west of I-15. Patrons are encouraged to bring a lawn
chair and a cooler. Tickets are being sold in advance at
http://www.sincityrollergirls.com/ where there is also more venue
informaiton.

Sunday afternoon Super Roll Sunday III will happen in Cincinatti. The
Dames of Destruction will play the Cincinnati Riots and Full Metal
Corsets will play Bloody Sundaes. The doors open at 3 p.m. at the
Florence Fun Dome at 7864 Commerce Drive in Florence, Kentucky, witht
he bout scheduled to start at 4 o'clock. Tickets are available online
at CincinnatiRollergirls.com or from any Cincy Rollergirl for $10.00
OR are available at the door for $15.00 -- Kids 6 and under are free!

Sunday evening, Southern Brawl, or as I like to call it The Big Event
will be held in Houston. The undefeated champion Psych Ward Sirens of
the Houston Roller Derby league will host the undefeated champion High
Seas Hotties of the Dallas Derby Devils at the Verizon Wireless
Theater in downtown Houston. Also, the remaining three teams from
each league will form all-star teams and play each other. So if there
isn't already a Houston versus Dallas rivalry in roller derby, there
will be by the end of the night. The event could have the largest
crowd to ever see a flat track roller derby match in Texas as Verizon
has a capacity between 3,000 and 3,500 people depending on the event.
Tickets are $15. For more information on the venue and buying tickets
please see http://www.livenation.com/venue/getVenue/venueId/2222/.
Doors open at 6 p.m, with the event scheduled to start at 7 o'clock.

If there are any other events I have missed, pleased don't hesitate to
post them.

If the Governor's Cup in Austin is any indication, the Dallas Derby
Devils all star team may be the toughest team other than the
National Champion Texas Rollergirls in Texas. But when they played
the Houston Roller Derby interleague team, several of the best
players in that league were not on the team because they chose to
stay healthy for the next weekends Championship game.

Now Houston will skate two full squads against two squads from the
Dallas Derby Devils. One game will feature the two undefeated
league champions. The High Sea Hotties of Dallas are led by Captain
Rumblin Rose and feature G-Town Butcher and Razen Kane as a couple
of their top skaters. But this team is very deep in all positions.

The Psych Ward Sirens are led by top league jammer Mistilla the
Killa, along with power jammer Dementia. Co-Captain Carmen Geddit
is a very good pivot and can also jam. Crasher plays pivot and
blocker and is the type of skater you don't want getting into your
body with one of her shoulder blocks. This team is capable of
scoring a bunch of points with their talented jammers, but they also
play very tough defense, holding the Burlesque Brawlers to only 26
points for the entire championship game.

Both leagues will field an all star teams made up of the remainng
three teams. I have only seen the Dallas Devil Derby skate one time
and that was a one point qualifying period loss to Assassination
City in March. In the Governors cup they defeated Assassination
City to win the cup in the championshi skating period. So there is
no doubt they will be tough.

I have seen the Houston all-star team members skate twice. Flame N
Rage of the Bayou City Bosses, Beveraly Kills of the Machete
Betties, and Fannie Matic of the Burlesque Brawlers are likely to
the featured jammers for Houston. But Death By Chocolate of the
Bosses who is coming off of a broken upper ankle, skated the last
jam of her game on September 9th. If her endurance has returned,
she could a significant factor in the game. She was probably one of
the top three or four jammers in the league before she busted her
ankle in June.

Other Houston Roller Derby, I believe their team knickname is HaRD
Knocks, that I have enjoyed seeing play include Betties The
Prosecurtor, and Agent Belligerant, Brawler blocker Goldie Bloxx,
and Felanie of the Bosses. If needed Agent Belligerant and The
Prosecutor can pivot or jam equally well.

The event will be held at The Verizon Wireless Theater in Downtown
Houston at 520 Texas Ave. Potentially this facility may be able to
hold 3,000 or more fans. So this is a big time game potentially,
and Houston Roller Derby events regularly have drawn 1,500 to 2,000
fans during their 2006 season. It is likely that this even will
draw the largest crowd to ever see flat track roller derby in the
State of Texas. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event is scheduled to
start at 7 o'clock. For ticket and venue information please see

Let me tell you why. I went by the Macy's ticketmaster outlet in
Austin and no Houston Roller Derby "Southern Brawl" was available.
So I called ticketmaster long distance and asked for section 203 or
207. See the seating chart on this web site.
http://www.livenation.com/venue/getVenue/venueId/2222/

They only offered to sell me section 205 in the balcony. Now that
is the section farthest from the track in the balcony.

Well, I'm Not Gonna Take It,
Never Did and Never Will! (Name that tune?)

That means I will be traveling down to Houston on event day, and
getting there early enough so I can get a front row seat in section
203 or 207, IF they'll even sell it to me. And by the way, if you
buy a reserved seat up in the balcony, you can still sit down in the
lower deck. But if you buy one in the lower level general admission
area, you can't sit in the upper deck.

Is this any way to run a ticket agency? So why do entities like the
City of Houston and Caesar's Hotel in Las Vegas contract out to
ticket-in-a-box, uh Ticketmaster? Because that way they don't have
to hire personnel to man their box offices. But of course that
means that it will be the most antiseptic, impersonal operation
run. For me to fight through ticketmaster and still attend an event
means that I think that event is really important. But I'll
guarantee you in Las Vegas when Ticketmaster jacked the services
fees on $80 tickets to see Carole King another 30%, I skpped seeing
one of my favorite singer/composers from my teenaged years.

Subject: The Status of Roller Derby in 2006

Let's start off with the fact there are somewhere over 130 leagues
throughout the world. Now not all those leagues are skating, but
they are out there at least organized and trying to get to the point
where they are skating competitively as a league. Probably of those
leagues, six are banked track leagues, or at least they would like to
be banked track leagues. The rest are flat track leagues.

The sport is no longer promoter-owned and driven. Roller Derby as it
has emerged is skater-owned. And for this reason, it is an honest-to-
goodness grass roots sport. Largely through the efforts of the
Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), rules have been
standardized and real interleague bouts are occurring almost every
weekend.

The Dust Devil National Championship in February crowned a veteran
league champions, the Texas Rollergirls. Perhaps more imortantly, a
large number of teams were able to compete in that tournament. And
since that time most of the WFTDA leagues have been competing and
crowning their own league champions. In fact, more and more flat
track leagues will join the WFTDA this fall and next year to the
point that I suspect there may be 90 members instead of the current
30.

A major event, the Bumberbout Skating Tournament, has been held in a
major sporting venue, Key Arena in Seattle. 22,000 people went
through the doors at one time or another during that 10 hour
tournament to see what was going on. Now I'm not saying they all
stayed to watch the games being skated, but that is the count of the
number of people came through the door to see what the roller derby
tournament was about.

Because of the efforts of the local league organizations, and their
input into the national flat track organization, I see a wonderful
future for women's roller derby in this country, and across the
world. It is the local skaters, leagues, and the WFTDA that is
helping to drive the growth of roller derby. It is not banked track
leagues, because they just don't seem to have the organizational
drive necessary to grow that segment of the sport.

Even more than that, the skater-owned leagues, and the skater-driven
organization has taken the ball out of the roller derby promoter's
court. If the promoters want to play ball, or in this case skate,
they are somehow going to have to work with the skaters in the form
of skaters' leagues, and the skaters' organization.

If ESPN wants to get a national roller derby tournament on their
cable network, they can go to the promoters, but the promoters won't
be able to produce the product because they don't have the skaters.
That means that ESPN will likely one day figure out that to have this
dynamic sport on their network, they are going to have to deal with
the skaters either through their leagues or through the WFTDA. I
think it will happen eventually.

Skaters, and the fans that support women's flat track throughout the
world, the ball is now in your court. The promoters will not be able
to take that ball away from you because of your work. So if you ever
get discouraged about what is happening in your sport, just keep
plugging away at improving your skating, your team, your league, and
through your efforts your sport. It will pay off for you if it
hasn't already.

Thanks for the insightful game recap. I think this shows that with a
little work, different leagues with different rules can get together
and roller derby. It's always great to hear about both leagues.

I have now looked at pictures from section 202, and it looks like the
track actually partially goes underneath the balcony in section 202
and 208. By the way, sections 201 and 209 are next to the stage, and
are likely partial obstruction seats. So I think I will go for
section 203 or section 207. This is one situation where it would
honestly be better to be first come first serve seats because until
you see the angles from the balcony, you really don't know which
seats are best. I like to see all of the game if possible.

I will put a couple of balcony (sect 202) pictures in the
miscellaneous pictures photo album. So I would say section 203 and
207 may give you the closest to the track, but whether you are going
to be able to see under ther balcony is somewhat debatable.

Oh well, look at the pictures and see what you think. Thanks to
Carmen Geddit for the photos so fans can make a decision about what
are the best tickets to get.

It was with great excitement that the Penn Jersey She Devils (PJSD) and the
Dominion Derby
Girls (DDG) entered into their first interleague bout together on September 24,
2006. The
DDG traveled to the bout from Norfolk, Virginia to play the PJSD on their home
turf at
Cornwell's Skating Center in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.

This was the DDG's first interleague bout and second public bout ever! It was
also the first
time the DDG travel team bouted together. With one season of home games under
their
belt, it was also the first time the PJSD bouted another league.

Both leagues learned to play derby by very different rules. The DDG is hoping to
enter the
Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), and all their practicing and
bouting is
done by WFTDA rules and standards. The PJSD learned to play roller derby by the
"old
school" rules as played by professional banked track leagues between the
1930s-1980s.
The PJSD coaches are both retired professional banked track skaters. The DDG
coaching
staff is comprised solely of active skaters on the league who strictly follow
WFTDA rules.
Referees from the bout were comprised of one from the DDG, two from the Long
Island
Roller Rebel (LIRR) league, and 3 from the PJSD. Both the DDG and LIRR refs used
standards and penalties associated with WFTDA rules. The DDG would like to
extend a
huge thank you to Psycho Billy and Jefferee of LIRR for not only traveling to
our bout but
also helping us our time of need!

Despite the rules discrepancies, both teams skated very well. It remained a
close match
throughout the bout, and by the third period, some of the pressures of differing
standards
had dissipated so that both teams could concentrate on the game. Many skaters
from
neighboring leagues were in attendance, and all of them said they were impressed
by
everyone's abilities on both sides- especially since it was the first
interleague bout for
both teams.

The final score seems to be debatable, but the score on the board was PJSD 162,
DDG 115.
Both teams lined up at the end of the bout to hug and give praise to each other.
Both
leagues learned lessons in the logistical difficulties of bouting between
leagues who have
such varying standards. At the end of the day though, each skater knew she had
done her
best and that even a controversial roller derby bout is better than no bout at
all!

One of my experiences in my life is buying tickets for shows and
writing reviews. In the past four and a half years I have probably
seen 75 or more shows. And the ticket agent for Verizon Wireless
Theater, where the Houston Roller Derby and Dallas Derby Devils are
playing a couple of games on Sunday, is Ticket Master. I have had a
tough time dealing with those folks in Vegas before.

You can buy tickets online. Lower level tickets are general
admission, first come first serve.
http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0C003D2FAD12799E?
cce_tid=6C4A3CD12C651F42928244831231463A35&brand=livenation

But the 900 or so balcony seats are reserved. That means there is a
trick to ordering them online, but I don't know what it is because
they have the best seats which are listed as balcony center but are
actually the furthest seats away from the track.

So I want seats close to the side of the track, where the curves are
and that is side balcony. It looks like section 202 and 208 are the
best possible seats for me, with an overview of the track. I of
course want FRONT ROW! But it doesn't appear I can get those seats
online with ticket master.

So there appears to be an alternative, ticket master outlets in
various Texas cities. http://www.ticketmaster.com/h/tcenters/tx.html
I'll check it out tonight as I try to get those what I hope are primo
tickets for $15 plus various ticketmaster charges, at least $3+
online.

Or, you can do what I dread, calling up ticketmaster to try to talk
them into selling you the ticket you want, where you want it.
  Box Office:
Main Line 713-230-1600
Information 713-230-1666
Sales by Phone 713-629-3700

Or if you are in Houston, you can go downtown to the Verizon Theater
box office, avoid some of the extra costs, and get the tickets you
need. Again, all lower level seats are general admission, first come
first serve. And it appears the only general admiision tickets will
be in front of the track, and not on the side of the track or on the
stage side of the track. But of course the balcony tickets are
apparently not that situation.

Well, it should be a wonderful event, a real happening in Texas at
the venue that could have 3,000 fans or more. And I will be making
the drive down to Houston to see it Sunday.

Anybody with more information, advice, is asked to respond.

Altlhough I did not attend a bout, a match, I did make it to a
couple of roller derby activities. I was able to wake up Saturday
morning nice and healthy after a nasty chest cold all week, and give
blood in the Texas Rollergirls blood drive. I was also able to
drive down to a victory party in San Antonio for the Prim Reapers
despite a bunch of messy thunderstorms Saturday night in Central
Texas.

A common theme among the Texas Rollergirls and the Prim Reapers of
the Alamo City Rollergirls is the talk about the upcoming event in
Houston Sunday night. It is going to be an unbelievable event when
the Dallas Derby Devils come with their undefeated champion High Sea
Hotties to play Houston's undefeated Psych Ward Sirens in one game,
and when Dallas and Houston form all star teams from the remaining
three teams to have another game.

But the big huge attraction may be where the game is being played,
the Verizon Wireless Theater. The venue is a common concert venue
in downtown Houston that probably could hold up to 3,000 to 3,500
screaming roller derby fans. So this is a big event in Texas, the
first flat track even in a really big venue that I have ever heard
of.

Skaters in San Antonio in Austin are talking about car pooling to
get to this big game. I know I am buying a ticket online, and may
also be trying to work out some car pooling. Yes, I will be coming
back immediately after the game, but I want to be at this very
special event.

Perhaps we can get some of the Houston skaters to comment on
preparations from their perspective. Maybe they can give us some
hints on how to get there from I-45, I-10, and Hwy 290. You can
park on the streets for free. But this roller derby event is huge
in the State of Texas, and hopefully roller derby fans from anywhere
within 200 or 250 miles will be able to make it.

Rat City Rollergirls
Bout 6 of Season 2
Throttle Rockets (1-4) vs. Derby Liberation Front (5-0)
Sockit Wenches (3-2) vs. Grave Danger (1-4)
Tickets $15 in advance, $20 at the door
Reserved Bleachers $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
Bout begins at 6 p.m. Doors open at 4:30.

Coming out of a very strong runner-up showing in front of thousands
of hometown fans at the first Bumbershoot Flat-Track Derby
Invitational, Rat City Rollergirls settle in for the final regular
season bout before the 2006 Championships on October 21. The Sockit
Wenches and reigning champs Derby Liberation Front have already
locked in their places in the showdown for the championship, so
there's nothing but pride on the line -- but you can be sure Grave
Danger and the Throttle Rockets would both love to get in a dig and
some bragging rights by knocking off one of these teams before they
face each other in the Grudge Match for Not-Last!

Bumberbout attendees may be most interested in the showdown between
All-Star jammers Miss Fortune (Sockit Wenches) and Femme Fatale
(Grave Danger). Last time these teams met, Femme Fatale was out
with a knee injury, and Grave Danger fell by a numbing 127 - 51.
With Femme Fatale back in, and recent additions filling out their
roster's depth, will Grave Danger be able to avenge this bitter loss
earlier in the season?

Stay tuned!

Thanks to Hurt Reynolds of Rat City for the witeup.

I of course can read all that Private BeenJammin has put in here, but
if you are not a member of myspace, well I don't know if you can. I
have the Southern Brawl poster up in the upcoming event poster album.
I have the picture of Verizon Wireless Theater up in the Miscellaneous
photo album during one of Houston Roller Derby's practice. That
picture alone should tell you why PBJ is excited about skating on the
all star team for that bout.

The bout will have two games one between the Dallas Derby Devils High
Sea Hotties against the HRD's undefeated champions Psych Ward Siresn.
ACtually I believe both teams are undefeated. The remaining match will
have all star teams from the remaining three teams in each league.
Private BeenJammin is one of the 15 people on the roster for Houston.
I was looking over the roster figuring out who is going to be the
jammers and pivots etcetera, and I will be consulting a few of my
skating friends in Houston on this.

I am not nearly as familiar with the Dallas Derby Devils but perhaps we
can get a roster for the all stars, and of course they are likely to
have a published roster for the Dallas Derby Devils on their web site.
I'll contact Rumblin Rose of Dallas for some help on this.

For more information go to http://www.houstonrollerderby.com to order
tickets and get any more information. This could be the largest crowd
ever for flat track roller derby in Texas, so anyone who can attend
this October 1st should make plans now.

Thanks PBJ!

Virginia's Dominion Derby Dames cross the Mason-Dixon this Sunday,
September 24, to take on the Penn Jersey She-Devils in the
Philadelphia area's first interstate roller derby bout in two decades!

"Crossing the Line" pits both leagues' all-star teams against each
other, with each team vowing to leave a trail of bruised and broken
bodies in their wake.

The She-Devils and Derby Girls are both winding down their respective
inaugural bouting seasons, and while the She-Devils have the
advantage of more experience on the track, there's no telling what
battles will erupt when the familiarity of playing against fellow
league skaters is gone.

Don't miss the chance to watch the North take on the South. Halftime
features a burlesque show, along with a 50/50 charity raffle, and

Thanks Chris for the excellent write up. While it may have been
long to write, it was an easy read for me. I think one of the most
interesting notes was the word of mouths advertising, with people on
the fair grounds buying tickets into the third period. Hopefully
many of those people will be back.

All and all, it sounded like a great event.

A one point victory by the Prim Reapers was captured by Ziv Kruger in
San Antonio. Here is the link to his photos.

Also Ziv has some more Bumberbout up with teams like Minnesota,
Carolina, an Bay Area photos.

My guess is that Ziv still has a few more photos to put up so keep an
eye open for more great roller derby action photos, and warmups and
after party photos.

OK, first of all, congratulations to all the wonderful ACRG skaters
and staff for a fantastic and successful year.

Now, about the trophy:
It's pretty cool. Decent size. Green and black. Nice and shiny.

What is it?

What's the trophy called?
Did someone buy it or did someone make it? Is it engraved? i dont see
anything written on it.
Was it specifiacally made this way? It seems to be hollow. Is that so
it can be drank from?

Is it a

I have to say, it is kinda neat looking, and it appears to be green
and black, the league colors.

Who gets this trophy, the team captain? The coach?

Is the exact same trophy going to be given out next year, or one lust
like it? If that is whats planned and this item was bought at a store,
I hope more than one was purchased because I would have to guess you
would have a hard time finding one again a year from now.

Once again, a view from inside the track.  Warning, this is a LONG post and probably really boring for most of you.  Part of me wants to write volumes about the days and weeks before the bout and the countless hours of preparation by the skaters, friends, family and support staff of the Carolina Rollergirls.  That probably deserves its own post though, so ... game on!

[Pre-Game]
We have a quick refs/captains meeting to go over the slight rules differences we may be used to calling in game.  About the other difference we can really identify is the 20' rule ... we give a warning when a skater is 20' out but don't give a penalty until they do something; SCRG calls this tighter and will penalize a skater for simply being 20' out of the pack.  We are joined by Tara Hymen from Sin City as a guest referee and she'll be working the pack.

Each team and the refs get a chance to skate on the floor.  It is surprisingly smooth and grippy.  There are a few spots that will be difficult ... the floor is made up of 22'x22' concrete slabs and some of the join gaps are big enough to grab a wheel if it's on edge.  Since I wear inlines (I know ... I know ... shame on me), it can be really bad as I can get a couple wheels snagged at the same time.

[Period One]
At the start of the game I'd have to say that I'm a little worried about Sin City.  Only 9 skaters and some rumored to be very new to Roller Derby.  The crowd is getting into it but seems kinda small.  We're going with the new 10' buffer zone around the rink instead of 5' as that seems to be the way USARS is headed.  After the first two shifts though, I'm done worrying about Vegas.  The score is nominally tied (or close enough) and the Sin City folks have physically dominated the first two shifts putting Carolina girls on the floor.  There are alot of skate-locks in this period ... both teams are getting frustrated at this and Sin City calls a timeout to talk about it.  Sin City is also taking some time to adjust to the way we call 20' (no penalty for simply being out of the pack, penalty if you actually do something like impede or block).

Sin City is larger than Carolina ... we have alot of girls that are very short ... Vegas must be at least 2-3" taller on average.  Somehow the scoreboard doesn't reflect this size advantage and the period ends with Carolina ahead by a wide margin.  Eris and Shirley Temper seem to be bouncing off of some of the SCRG girls.

Girls are flying into the crowd.  Mostly Carolina girls from my vantage.

Carolina:  48
Sin City:  21

[Period Two]
During the first period, Teflon Donna pulled a muscle in her left shoulder/neck and decides she's done for the night.  I can hear the Carolina coaches telling the girls to "go the full two minutes" and try to keep the lead based on the bench length and conditioning of the CRG team.

Trish and Ivana are playing just about every jam, or at least seem to be.  I thought Trish had surgery on her ankles for some reason.

Early in the period Rockerboy announces that the concession folks are out of beer.  I'm not sure this is due to the righteous thirst of derby fans or a failure to plan on part of the concessions vendor (and is probably a combination of both).  As impressive of a stat as that is, I'm sure next time there will be more beer.

I'm not sure but there seems to be a huge stretch of time when Sin City is getting lead jam ... or at the very least, Carolina IS NOT during the early part of this period.  The hits continue in a major fasion ... Princess America is sent TWICE on the same jam off the track spinning in the air like a helicopter.  I need to see this on DVD ... truly highlight-reel material.  (I hear that this bout was shot in HD ...)

Again, I'm not watching the scoreboard, just the track and the physical battle seems to be pretty even, but as the period ends Carolina still has a sizable lead.

There are some guys in the stands heckling Trish the Dish.  She turns, skaters over into the safety zone and exchanges words with them.  And then, I kid you not, for the rest of the game THEY ARE CHEERING FOR TRISH.  Turn-coats ... but amusing.

Carolina:  85
Sin City:  43

[Period 3]
So, the rumor is that the box office just closed.  There were folks buying tickets up until the start of the third period to get in and see the bout.  Apparently you can hear the crowd and noise all over the fairgrounds.  Word.

So, I can't tell who the new Sin City skaters are.  I mean, there are supposed to be four rookies ... I know that Ivanna and Trish aren't the rookies, but I'm not sure who.  The rest of their team ... I just can't figure out who's a new skater or not.

Ivanna got hurt sometime during this period; I think her fingers had been run over.  This period also featured a crowd-favorite moment when Violet Femme and Penelope Bruz got tangled together and went down.  Bruz tried to get up but didn't realize her skate was stuck on Violet's skirt ... the more she pulled the more Violet's skirt stretched.  I, of course, was watching the pack and didn't see this little event, but I could hear the crowd start to roar.  For those who don't know the ins-and-outs of the Carolina Rollergirls, Violet Femme is well known for wearing VERY purple undergarmets.  Anyone who was at the bout knows that now.

A strange thing is going on during this period.  If/when Carolina gets lead jammer the crowd is going WILD.  Deafening.  I check the scoreboard and CRG is still significantly ahead of SCRG, but the crowd is simply into the game.  The skaters all have a huge amount of energy from this (on both teams).

The last jam stops with just a few seconds left in the game and the clock runs down as the skaters are getting to the track.  I suspect that, as beat-up as they all were, each of those teams could have played another period on the adrenaline rush alone.

Carolina:  127
Sin City:  65

As Celia Fate said in her earlier post, the score doesn't reflect the closeness of the game.  I can only imagine what the rematch in Vegas will be like.  Sin City should have a fuller roster and be playing on their home turf.  I can't wait to see that match.

Some stats of note:

There were 35 total jams in the game, including the final aborted jam.

Trish the Dish jammed twice.  I thought she was still recovering and hadn't planned on jamming.  She also played pivot 27 times.  If you do the math and throw out that last jam then Trish was jammer or pivot on all but 5 jams.  Seriously.  She really did play the whole game.  She was in the box twice; I bet she missed at least one jam because of that.

Roxy Rocket (Carolina) had a 70% lead jam percentage, Betty Rumble (Carolina) had 66.7% and Kit Fisto (Sin City) was right behind her with 60%.  Trish the Dish was 100% on her two jams.

Roxy lead in jammer points with 39, followed by Ivanna with 35.

I haven't seen the penalty stats but the Carolina team did have more penalties.  I'm not sure what the penalties-per-person breakdown is, but there were definitely "more" for CRG than SCRG.

It was, in short, a blast.  I've said it a couple of times already but I can't wait for the rematch in Vegas.   The website (http://www.carolinarollergirls.com) has been updated and shows a couple of pictures of the bout on the front page.  I'm not sure they properly convey the scale, but going from 650 folks to near 2000 was really impressive.

That's it for now.

Here's the recap of the Ohio Roller Girls first championship written by superfan
and "OHRG
reporter" Mr. Take Out. Photos can be seen here: http://www.pbase.com/
millsartphotography/ohrg_championship

Battelle Hall was filled with emotion before the battle even began September 10.
Fans
showed up with an array of colorful signs, getups, and prepared to scream in
support of
their favorite Derby teams. Several derby leagues from across the region came
out in
fervent support of the best in the Midwest: the one the only Ohio Roller Girls.

The first bout of the night featured the brutal Blackeye Bullies and a winless
but tough
Sprockettes. Jammers from both teams exploded with excellent strategy and
explosive
speed to score some major points. The Bullies started out with four solid jams
totalling 16
points. Luna Chicken and Holly Hotwheels sped through the Bullies defense to
score 29
points in the first four jams and the Sprockettes took a commanding 13-point
lead.

The Bullies fought back with stiff defense from the likes of Hell Camino and
Wild Irish
Rose, and held the Sprockettes scoreless for five jams. Living Dead Grrl lead
the rebuttal,
helping keep the Bullies scoreless for four jams before being ejected for too
many major
penalties. Toxic Spill and Barracuda, both with double-digit point totals, wore
down the
Sprockettes' D in the second half. Then, the Bullies were able to tie it up with
just a few
jams left. However, it was not enough to overcome a determined Sprockettes, who
proudly
took home their first win and 3rd place in the OHRG.

As the final 86-84 score was announced for the Sprockettes' victory, the crowd
erupted
with cheers. Both benches cleared and the teams piled on top of each other in an
orgy of
hugs. It was the single best showing of sportsmanship and respect this reporter
has ever
seen.

The Championship and second bout of the night showcased the undefeated Take-outs
and
the bodacious Band of Brawlers. The crowd was anticipating a veritable slug fest
and that
is exactly what they got! Overall the match was a clean one, but defense would
make the
difference.

The first half of this ticking time bomb proved to be one of the closest match
ups OHRG
has seen all season. Girlzilla and Killa Fitzgerald made it hard for the
Take-outs to rack up
points holding four jams to zero. Ruby Doom and Royal Pain responded by
preventing
more than 5 points on any single jam the first half. Pippi Ripyourstockings and
Foxy Force
led scoring with 15 and 13 points respectively. Brawlers' captain Meg O' Death
led her
team's offense with 12 points. Sid Vixxxen and Gypsy Warfare were not far behind
but
unable to break double digits. The end of the half saw the Take-outs up 2 points
31-29.

The second half started with Foxy's jam heard round the world, as she easily
pulled in 8
points. Take-Outs captain Pippi came back after a goose egg in the second jam to
rack up
9 more in the fourth. Foxy led the half in offensive production with an amazing
31 points
giving her 44 total for the night. Many Brawlers got a shot in the jammer
position, trying
to throw off the Take-outs Defense. Meg O' Death and Sid Vixxxen combined pulled
in 31
points, from the pack-controlling Royal Pain and Dixie Heartless, in a valiant
effort.

The Take-Outs held a commanding double-digit lead most of the second half. In
what
would be the last jam of the night after a last minute time-out, a determined
Meg O'
Death stole lead jammer with absurd quickness. The Brawlers' pack held back the
formidable Foxy Force. It looked as though Meg might just snatch victory away
from the
jaws of defeat. After what seemed like an eternity, Foxy broke through and
hurried to pull
out 4 final points and preserve a double digit win. Congratulations to the
Take-outs for
coming away with the Envy Cup in an 86-73 jam fest.

Please keep your eyes on ohiorollergirls.com for info on the November Bout in
against the
fourth-ranked Minnesota Rollergirls. Also swing by team's Myspace pages and
leave them
some comments and thank them for this amazing season of flat track roller derby.
Even
though champions were crowned this season there were no losers. Every last
player
brought their heart and soul to each bout and deserve our appreciation. Last but
not least,
thanks to the fans that made this season and our seasons to come possible.
