withdrawal. Luckily for you, Texas Rollergirls feel your pain and

October 26-28, 2007 Roller Derby Hall of Fame Weekend
At the International Skate Center in Mount Laurel, NJ, the Penn Jersey She Devils played host to the Canadian team known as the Hammer City Roller Girls. A great crowd was on hand representing both the USA & Canada as fans from Toronto were there to cheer on their beloved Canadian team. Many original skaters from the Roller Derby Hall of Fame were also in attendance. Competition between the 2 teams was fierce with each team striving to win. Unfortunately, one of the Canadians skaters (Danger Mouse) went down and was taken to the hospital where they later found out she had sustained a fracture of her ankle. After all was saidand done, both teams skated around the floor in what may be the most admired form of true sportsmanship. The final score was Penn Jersey 85 and Hammer City 57.
These game photos were taken by Hell City Hooligan skater, King Taco.
On Sunday evening an event was held to induct six more skaters into theRoller Derby Hall of Fame. Old School Derby Association league, the Penn Jersey She Devils, were invited and asked to model the old jerseys worn by skatersfrom years gone by. They also received an award of special merit from theRoller Derby Hall of Fame. As the evening came to an end proud coaches of the Penn Jersey She Devils sat back and said, "Doors just opened for OSDA."
The following photos were taken by super Roller Derby Fan (and OSDA member) Jersey Joe.
Doors Open for OSDA
This past weekend on Saturday October 27, OSDA League the Penn Jersey She Devils(representing the USA) took on the ladies from Hammer City (representing Canada) in a game skated under OSDA rules. It was a tough game with a lot of excellent skating, but when all was said and done, the She Devils took it 85 to 57.
Both teams joined each other for a victory lap around the track with their flags held high. This event was held in conjunction with the 2007 Roller Derby Hall of Fame Induction Event and many Old School Banked Track Skaters were in attendence including stars such as Buddy Atkinson, Judy Arnold & Little Richard Brown. For many, this was their first Flat Track Game and the reaction was very favorable to the OSDA style.
The following night, the Hall of Fame held their induction dinner making six more skaters members of the Hall of Fame. The She Devils were in attendence along with representatives from other OSDA teams like Corpus Christi Rolling Thunder and the South Jersey Derby Girls. The She Devils were chosen to model uniforms from Roller Derby's past and did a fashion show during the event. After the induction ceremonies, the She Devils were surprised by the Hall of Fame with a Special Merit Award for keeping the spirit of Old School Derby alive. One of the highlights of the evening was seeing Buddy Atkinson, former coach of the incredible Eastern Warriors, running an unplanned training session with the OSDA skaters in the hallway outside the banquet room. One could feel the love & respect that these two generations of skaters had for each other. From the many offers of coaching and training assistance offered to the OSDA by these banked track legends, I think we can safely say that doors that had long been closed were opened to the OSDA that night.
There has been an overwhelming response to the most recent age
demographic poll for those involved in roller derby. 71 people have
responded, a record for any Roller Derby Is Sport poll. I think in
part this reflects the growth of the group, and the responsiveness of
the group.
So far, the largest group of skaters is in the 30-39 age group,
slightly over 50% of the skaters. The second largest group is in the
21-29 year old group. There are a few 40 year olds, and one 50 plus
skater and one 18-20 year old skater.
The fans are dominated by the 30-39 year old age group. Next up is
the 40-49 year old group, and then the 50-59 year old group.
There is time to vote if you haven't yet. I believe the poll will be
open until about November 27th. To vote just come the the Roller
Derby Is Sport main page. Look in the left column where it says
Polls, and mouse-click on that. Then choose the poll you would like
to vote in. Currently there are two active polls, the age
demographic poll of roller derby and the penalty that always should
be called a major.
Thanks for your participation!

Here's a post I lifted from the yahoo roller_girls group
__________________________________________________________________
I'm somewhat hesitant to raise this, as it recommends an additional
expense for us all... nonethess I believe that in principle it's a
sound idea for a few reasons.
Consider the advantages to having to pay an annual fee for
registering a name in the roster.
Firstly, it would help compensate Paige and crew for an effort that
must surely be taking up greater amounts of time and effort as the
number of skaters and support staff grows.
I for one would be willing to pay $10, $25, $50 annually to register
my skate name. Although the fee requirement would entail more work
for the roster keepers at first, in the long run I believe that it
might allow someone to take on its maintenance as an actual, full
time, paying job.
Secondly, it would help keep the roster pared down to those who are
actively involved in RD. If a potential skater happens to be a "90
day wonder" her name is not renewed and becomes available to another,
more active participant.
Comments?
.....................................................................
First off let me say I'm a fan & only a fan. I've been to Austin for
The 2007 Calvello Cup Championship and some of the Jacksonville
Rollergirls bouts in Fl. These thoughts are mine, I have not spoken
with the ladies that keep the list or to Mel Practice only the voices
in my head have heard these.
I thought why not combine the two.
Say each skater pays 25.00 a year to register a name for a year. This
might work better as suggested by having each league collect money
and make the once a year payment.
I don't know what it costs to run a nonprofit, but say you took 5
dollars from each registered name for expenses and put 20 dollars
into a fund for injured skaters.
Now I read there are 10,000 names in the list, I'm sure not all of
those are active but, just to keep it simple.
10,000 x 20 = 200,000.00
I would think that would go along ways towards keeping a fund that
could help injured skaters.
That's my 2 cents

As you can tell from the score, I got to ref in a doozy of a matchup on
Sunday that had one of the great all-time chaotic endings. Got a full
bout recap over on DNN, should you wish to read it:

You're in there! It's just in a weird order.
You have a choice of "18-20 Skater" (#2) or "1-19 Fan or Volunteer" (#6).
Bitches Bruze
Go to the poll. I wrote it in as the first selection, but yahoo put it
as the second selection. Nobody has voted in this category yet, but
there is a choice for 18-20 year olds. Believe me, this is an
interesting issue because it seems that many leagues started with a
minimum age of 21 years, but some have modified it down to 18 year
olds. I think the issue may have been insurance.
So far, at least concerning the membership of this group is concerned,
the 30-39 year old skaters are winning with 21-29 year olds having the
second. The fans seem to have 30-39, 40-49, and 50-59 year olds. I
supposed you could conclude that the fans are older than the skaters,
but I think that is limited to this group. I remember Flame & Rage
commented in an interview on radio that a lot of Houston Roller Derby
season ticket holders were salt and pepper types, and actually remember
roller derby from the 60s and 70s. I think that was a perceptive
comment.

Hey Jacquline, Now that is what I call "thinking outside the box!" If you are proposing what I think you are proposing, putting a RollerGirl's team symbol or name on your St. Judes Hospital Quilt for a donation, I think it would be better to put something on the quilt that symbolizes what St. Judes goal is and that is its Children's Hospital. Remember your audience.
But you, my dear friend, may have really hit on something for a fund raiser. It is not a giant leap from making quilts to making battle flags. The one thing about RollerDerby that has just driven me nuts is that it has not taken full advantage of its one great power that it has over all other sports in my opinion and that is its style or panache. Oh yes, they have kinda recognized it but they have just not seen how easy and far they could go with it to grow this sport.
Symbols and symbolic gestures are so very, very important. Symbols are so strong that people die for them. How many war movies have you seen in your life where the soldier carrying the flag falls and another takes the flag from his hands, rallies the troops, and they go on to victory.
For a more personal example you might want to call up some of the pictures of The National Championship that was just held down here in Austin. There is one picture where our team skates out onto the track prepared to do battle. In the lead is one skater holding a pole with a simple white flag on it. It has a symbol of a cannon on it and the words "COME AND TAKE IT". It is a "battle flag" and a symbol of defiance!
This flag dates back to Texas's War of Independence from Mexico. It has deep psychological meaning to many Texans familiar with our history. People not from Texas and not familiar with our history may have a hard time understanding just how deep the psychological attachment is for some Texans toward that flag. I know one Texan that feels so strongly for that flag that he has it on the wall next to his bed. It is the last thing he sees before turning out the light at night.
Jacquline, what I propose to you is that you tweak your wonderful idea a bit from making quilts for fundraisers to making battle flags. If a RollerGirl team wanted a battle flag, they would contact you with their design and ideas. You could negotiate the price for making them a battle flag depending on degree of complexity and quality of materials that they are willing to pay for. A certain amount of the money you collect would go into assisting your team establishing itself and a certain amount would go into a fund for "Fallen Warriors" to assist injured skaters. This is what you call a synergy.
Jacqueline, In closing I would like to tell you another little Indian story. Indians had a very sophisticated, stylized form of combat. Their way of life centered around a number of groups of people dedicated to fulfilling the various needs of their tribe in order that it might survive. They called these groups "societies".
All the needs of the people were channeled through these various societies. They even had a cheerleader society to maintain the spirit of the tribe when times were bad. Members of this group would often dress up as fools or clowns in order to make the people laugh. An off shoot of this society was "the contrarians" who would do everything backwards. They would walk around camp all day backwards. If you would set down, they would stand up. If you would stand up, they would sit down. If you would say "it is a hot day", they would say they were very cold. They were artists in thinking of clever ways of doing things backwards. They must have been hilarious, and they were much loved by the people. They remind me of the mascot from the Louisiana RollerGirls, "Ruby The Duck Lady".
And yes, Jacquline, they had a "care giver society" too. The people understood how vital all the various societies were for their survival, and all members of the tribe afforded them much honor and respect.
They did not have a "camera society" though, simply because they did not have cameras, I suspect. If they had had cameras, I believe they would have immediately made a connection as to how cameras might be useful in their survival, and they would have had a "camera society".
The Indian military units had a number of societies too. One of those military societies was called "The Sash Wearer Society". This group of warriors' mission was so profound that I still can not fully grasp how people that we considered savages could operate on a level of this degree of sophistication. I still have a hard time grasping all the deep meanings these people must have represented to their tribes.
Because of the very special role they played in the survival of their tribe they were held in the highest regard of them all. Various tribes had different ways of acknowledging "A Sash Wearer" when they met one. Some would step aside to let them pass first. Some would bow their heads, and I even think there were a few that would raise their arm with clinched fist (a universal symbol of defiance) to show their deep understanding and profound appreciation of what the role of the Sash Wearer was and what he was prepared to do if necessary to save his tribe.
The dress of the Sash Wearers varied from tribe to tribe, but their dress was universal in one way. They all carried four things. A shield, a spear, a war ax and a long sash, usually about ten ft. long. The sash could be made from a number of things but they preferred cloth, either traded or taken from settlers. They preferred crimson or red color because of its symbolism to blood (their blood). They did not carry bows and arrows in that they were not necessary for their very special task. When they fought, it was in very close combat indeed. Although they had a spear it was not used as a weapon but as an anchor. When they fought the only real weapon they had was their battle ax.
The role of the sash had very significant symbolism for many American Indians. It was a symbol of sacrifice and a love so deep that I can hardly begin to grasp it.
When a war party would ride off to go to war with another tribe, there would always be at least one Sash Wearer who would go with them. His job was to stand upon a hill and survey the battle. If his warriors started to get the worst of it and there was a danger of them being wiped out, he would come down to the field of battle, take the end of the sash that was not tied to his body, and pin it to the ground with his spear. The ground within the radius of that ten ft. sash then became sacred ground for it represented his people. The moment he pinned his sash to the ground he was duty bound not to leave the radius of his sash and defend that ground to the death.
Now here is where it really gets deep. He could only be released from his pledge by his tribe's enemies. When an enemy tribe saw the sash wearer pin his sash to the ground, they would disengage from slaughtering his brothers and immediately surround the sash wearer. Then they would begin a long and torturous campaign to test his bravery and love for his people by taking turns fighting him. Not quite killing him but almost, unless they found him unworthy and then they would kill him and the rest of his surviving party immediately and then attack the camp of defenseless women and children.
But if he showed sufficient bravery they would spare the surviving members of his war party and allow them to return home to their women and children. On rare occasions if he was really brave they would even release the Sash Wearer from his vow to stand his ground to the death. But even if they spared the other members of his war party if he was sufficiently brave, they usually killed the Sash Wearer in the end as atonement for their lost warriors.
Now on first look, you might think this highly symbolic system of warfare was crazy. Far from it. This was a highly sophisticated system of warfare that allowed tribes to go to war if necessary to settle disputes and at the same time guarantee that neither side would be totally wiped out if the losing tribe could prove that they were worthy of surviving by showing that their society was capable of producing warriors of great love.
So Jacquline, I think your question was "how much is it worth?" Oh, that is a really good question on so many levels and I am not sure Honey Man can answer that. But this I do know. RollerDerby has produced in you a "warrior of great love". Keep on rolling and sewing.....Honey Man (retired!!!)

Oh Honeyman, I am so cracking up here with all the assumptions.
*large grin*
A little background you may not be aware of. Morphine made the HRD
league and very shortly afterward, was offered a "job she couldn't
refuse" in Austin. So for the next year, she skated for HRD, making
the drive back & forth between Houston & Austin 2-3 times a week
after work, occasionally 4, for practices & bouts. She was on the
Psych Ward Sirens team (this is also Dirty's team), and participated
the year they won the 2006 championship. After a year of all that
driving, she tried out for TXRG, made that league and you know the
rest of the story.
So hubby & I are faithful HRD fans, attending every bout but one for
the past 2 years (missed that one because I was at Heartland
Havoc/Eastern Regionals that weekend). We are also TXRG Hotrod Fans,
and have made most of the Austin bouts. And----I will continue to do
so. Hopefully, Morphine won't be moving any further away because I'm
not sure just how far I will drive to see her skate. I don't think
so, though, because she just bought her first house, so I think
she's there to stay.
Hmmm, it's entirely possible I may be thinking of keeping that quilt
myself if I win it, but like Dirty, I may donate it for a fund
raiser. Of course, that all depends on how bad Morphine wants it
too. I'm think seriously of making my own quilt for her. I've just
got to find the fabric.
So tell me how difficult it was deciding who to cheer for during
that HRD/Hotrod game last year and the Governor's Cup this year!!
Mama Morphine
ps: I definitely agree--Jackie needs to start on her next quilt
right away. There's money in them thar threads.

Yea COBRA is an option, kind of. Its $300/ month and I dont have any income right now. Hopefully something will come up soon enough.

Oh, Now that's funny. What a wonderful lesson about how assumptions can get you in trouble. Because daughter "Morphine" lives in Austin and Momma Morphine always attends daughter's bouts, Honey Man assumed that Momma Morphine lived in Austin too.
Now to think that Momma Morphine might have also been using Dirty Sanchez's phone or computer to order her quilt raffle tickets, that is doubly funny. Now to think that Momma Morphine, because she is such an avid fan, might be thinking of keeping the quilt herself and not giving it to daughter is another possibility that Honey Man had not considered.
Maybe "Jackie Jawbreaker" might want to start thinking about making another quilt. After all, she was soliciting us for ideas about what she could do for a winter fund raiser. Why would she want to do anything else for a fund raiser than what she has done already.
Jackie is truly an artist with very rare talents. I guess she could cut fire wood and sell it on the side of the highway for a winter fund raiser, but with her rare gift why would she want to? Maybe Jackie is "assuming" that her talent is not quite that valuable. Boy would she be making a very big old mistaken "assumption" if she thought that!
What a wonderful lesson for us all about "assumptions". Keep on rolling and talking.....Honey Man (retired!!!)
I agree, this is the perfect gift for either a roller derby skater or roller derby fan. Honey might not know that Dirty Sanchez and Morphine's Mom lives in Houston. In fact, it was Morphine's Mom that was calling from Heartland Havoc giving us the Eastern Final's score on Dirty Sanchez's phone. And besides, maybe Morphine's Mom wants the blanket for herself. She is an old school roller derby fan just like I am. What a one-of-a-kind gift!

Hey Dirty Sanchez, To turn around and use the quilt for yet another fund raiser, now that is what I call a real "synergy". That would be very generous of you. I don't know if I could do that. I am just plain nuts over that quilt! Keep on rolling and talking....Honey Man (retired!!!)
You're quite welcome, Jackie, but I should be the one thanking you for making such a unique piece of Roller Derby memorabilia available.
It's said we do things bigger and better here in Texas. I'm not surprised by the Texas representation; after all, Texas is the birthplace of the Roller Derby revival.
Should I be lucky enough to win the quilt, I will donate it to the Sirens to use as they see fit, a fundraiser I'm sure.

Even a Roller Derby Team can hope to win this and use it as their own
fundraiser at a bout!! A Christmas gift! Something for yourself! There
are many things that this Quilt can been used for! I might even become
famouse one day and it might become worth more money! I am here in
Roller Derby to stay for a long time! I will be here as a coach, fan,
supporter and a LOVER!!! I just thought that I would let you all know
that I don't just use my quilts for Roller Derby fundraisers. I am
working on a project with St Jude to have a silent quilt auction. In
June I will post a quilt just for Roller Derby again and all the money
will go to St.Jude. This will be a auction not a raffle.
I only need to sell about 600 more tickets ... if I sell that many tickets between now and Dec.14,2007 I will make that the cut off date so that I can mail it to the winner in time for them to get it for Christmas ...but I really need to sell that many tickets!!! So at this point I need each member to buy at least one ticket!!

Hey folks, I am glad "Jackie Jawbreaker" is extending the cut-off date for her quilt raffle past Oct. 31st. But I think she may be making a mistake to extend it to Dec 31st. Anyone that loves a Roller Girl could not possibly give her a better Xmas present than this quilt with a Roller Girl theme. If they have not checked it out on line yet, they should do so.
By the way, if Dirty Sanchez wins that quilt he better not ever show his face in Austin, Texas again because Momma Morphine wants that quilt real bad and if she gets hold of him she will tear him a new one. I am already in deep, deep trouble with her myself for buying a sizeable block of raffle tickets.

Thanks Nigel!
An outdoor venue is better than no venue at all. But it is ashame
that several leagues have problems getting indoor venues. It makes
me wonder if the WFTDA might not be able to form a resource committee
to help other leagues, not necessarily WFTDA leagues, find some
alternatives. I think local leagues do the best they can, but
sometimes they need a broader point of view, and who would be better
than already established leagues who have had to deal with these
issues before. I can think of four leagues right now that either
don't have indoor arenas, or have no venue at all. I don't want to
put any more work on the WFTDA, but they would be a natural to
address these issues because of their collective experience.
