We just confirmed that Hell on Wheels will be showing during Texas
Shootout (WFTDA Championships) weekend as well.
There is a really nice blurb here:
http://www.originalalamo.com/show.aspx?id=4808.
Too bad the new downtown Alamo won't be done in time!
to quote Texas Rollergirls' announcer Chip Queso - a "Derby Wife" is similar to the "swim buddy" you used to have as a kid at day camp - someone to play with you in the pool and make sure you don't drown or hurt yourself...everybody should have one!

Well, keep your eye out for one, and marry her next year at RollerCon! We've got the best marrying Elvis ref in... well... anywhere, I suppose.
And this year in the Vendor Village there was someone making rings out of bearing casings. For the average sized skater (non-dangler, heh) it actually fits like a ring. They welded some together and put letters on 'em too.
Wish I'd caught their name, they deserve a plug for great work at great prices. I believe they were Aussies? Still loving my SCRG and derby name bling-rings.

"Hell on Wheels is an epic doc. It's fast, fun, and inspiring."
- Chris Gore (founder, Film Threat Magazine)
"…the kind of twists, drama, cat fights and compound fractures that
only happen in real life. The story is extremely compelling,
sometimes laugh-out-loud outrageous and above all inspiring."
- Ain't It Cool News
"Hell on Wheels is a killer documentary about the Austin all-women's
roller-derby leagues that inadvertently launched a nationwide (and
now worldwide) revival of the sport."
- Salt Lake City Weekly
"Hell on Wheels is a fascinating story and a fun movie."
- Cinematical
"Part rock 'em, sock 'em sports doc (cue Trail of Dead) and part
behind-the-scenes exposé, the film is blessedly free of A&E-style
jiggle and melodramatic pandering, and it makes clear the value of
Derby for misfit girls who like to clothesline people. Best of all
is the film's coda, which tracks the subsequent formation of Roller
Derby leagues across the U.S. and the globe."
- The Austin Chronicle
Hell on Wheels takes a from-the-trenches look at the dizzying clash
of athleticism, exhibitionism, egos, politics and business that is
modern-era roller derby. A group of hard-hitting Texas women
overcome myriad obstacles in resurrecting and revamping the sport,
only to find internal strife ripping the fledgling organization
apart. Two leagues emerge from the clash, and what follows ignites
an international roller derby revival. Shot over a five-year period
by Bob Ray (Rock Opera) and Werner Campbell, Hell on Wheels was
edited by award winning editor Conor O'Neill (Murderball, Word Wars)
and features original music by …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of
Dead.

For all of you fans and skaters in Austin this is a great chance to
meet the Texecutioners, to help them raise funds, and in general just
to have a blast. You can ask them questions about what kind of wheels
they will use on the concrete floor in Raleigh? There might even be
some skaters selling tickets to Nationals.
I guess you can tell that I'll be there because who wouldn't want to
hang out with their local rollergirls and help them raise some travel
funds? And I don't have to show up at work the next day!
Thanks for the information Cheap Trixie!

Thanks Don! Keep us informed about what is going on in Tucson and
with your show. I know we have kicked around a few ideas about
television/video taped shows with a couple of people in Austin. I
know that Hambone has some broadcasts, maybe podcasts he does in New
York. The Colonel does some very good podcasts on Houston Roller
Derby and occassionally will throw in derby information from other
locations like Austin.
It will be great to meet you at Nationals!

Hi all,
So I've been lurking here for awhile and love all the bout recaps and
discussion, etc. at this
group. It really helps keep up with what's going on with roller derby.
I'm particularly interested because I do an Access TV show in Tucson on flat
track roller
derby called Roller Derby Rocks. All the various web-sites of the leagues have
differing
levels of details, and for some reason scores come very slowly. So, this site
has been
awesome in helping keeping track of whats up. Thanks to Phil for all the work.
In particular, I'd like to thank Hurt Reynolds and Justice Feelgood Marshall for
the great
info on the Heartland Havoc. Unfortuneatly, my computer was not allowing me to
keep up
with Leadjammers blog, who I also know was providing real time info.
I'll be at the Nationals and hope to meet many of the participants of this group
in person.
Although I briefly talked with Hurt at the Dust Devil this year whilst sharing
the DJ space.
I'll probably be starting to post my two cents also.
If anyone is interested in the show, it's simulcast at:
http://www.accesstucson.org/whatsontv/watch_online/
and click "Watch 73/98" on Saturdays at 2:30pm Tucson time (MST)
Thanks again and see y'all at the Nationals!!!

I suppose there are a lot of people traveling this long weekend, but
not many are likely heading to roller derby events since I have only
been able to spot three weekend events.
On Saturday, the Hard Knox Rollergirls of Knoxville, Tennessee will
be in action. The Lolitas Locas will be skating against the Black
Betties at Cool Sports, 110 South Time Road in Knoxville. Doors open
at 6 p.m. with first whistle scheduled to start the bout at 7
o'clock. Tickets are $10 in advance. For more information please
visit the Hard Knox web site at http://www.hardknoxrollergirls.com/.
Sunday a four team round robin tournament is scheduled for Conway,
South Carolina. The Palmetto State Rollergirls will host the
Charlotte Roller Girls, the Reedy River Roller Girls, and the
Columbia Quad Squad Rollergirls. The event will be held at DreamLand
Skate Arena, 4475 Privetts Rd in Conway. Tickets are $10 for general
admission, with tickets and more information being available online
at http://www.palmetostaterollergirls.com/.
A tailgate party will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. with free beer
while it lasts. Also there will be opportunities to arm wrestle the
refs!
It looks like the FoCo Girls Gone Derby, of Fort Collins, Colorado,
will play the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls as part of the Thunder in
the Rockies rally. The bout is scheduled for 1 p.m. which will take
place at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, Colorado. Tickets
are in essence the price of a pass. A single day pass is $10 and a
weekend pass costs $15. For more information visit
http://www.focogirlsgonederby.com/.
That is all the events I have been able to find for this weekend in
Roller Derby. As usual if I have missed any bouts that you know of,
please do not hesitate to post the information.
Phil Arnold,
Austin, Texas
Great write-up! But the best part of all was finding-out you all have a skater
named Radar Love. That's awesome.

Maybe this isn't an appropriate post for this group, but I'm looking
to split a room in Austin for Nationals. Any hotel will do, although
the Sheraton is the least expensive of the downtown sites.
This is probably a make or break part of the trip for me, so if you've
made arrangements or are looking to do so, please reply directly to
this mail, and don't clutter up the digest.

The evening's first
battle saw the 1-3 Junkyard Dolls giving the 3-1 Night Terrors a
serious run for their money before finally going down 86-60 in a
contest that was in question throughout the night. The Dolls' lineup
was notably different than it had been in the first meeting between the
two teams -- the talented jammer/pivot Dolly Rocket, previously of
Providence Roller Derby, was playing in her first game as a
full-fledged member of Charm City Roller Girls, and it was also the
first game as a Junkyard Doll for ex-Mobtown Mod Schiesty McFeisty. The
Dolls were also suffering a significant loss, though, as team captain
Sizzle-Leen was still recovering from a recent broken ankle, relegating
her to bench-coaching duties for the bout. Meanwhile, the Night Terrors
were without one of their speediest jammers in Dr. Skabs, who was ill
and unable to suit up for the bout, and were also missing
jammer/blocker Minerva Vavoom, out with a rotator cuff injury.
The
bout opened with both teams' highest-scoring jammers on the line, but
it was the Night Terrors' Joy Collision who beat the Junkyard Dolls'
Cherrylicious out of the pack, grabbed lead jammer status and put up a
quick 4-0 to start the game off on the right foot for the Terrors.
However, the very next jam saw the Dolls' jammer, Ali Kaida, put up a
5-0 grand slam on the Mexican Fury, helped out considerably by Dolls
pivot Dolly Rocket keeping the Fury from starting her second pass. The
lead would switch twice more in the next two jams, as the Terrors'
Rosie the Rioter took it back with a 4-0 jam over Radar Love,
immediately answered by a 6-0 jam for the Dolls' Killer Kitten over
Pixie Rocket. After Dolly Rocket won a 3-0 jam over Joy Collision in a
crowd-pleasing matchup of strength and speed, the Dolls were up 14 to
8, but a Night Terrors rally on the next three jams swung the momentum
solidly back to the scream queens. First, Dolls jammer Cherrylicious
was sent to the penalty box during a failed attempt to get past a
tenacious booty block from Frenzy Lohan, and Joy Collision capitalized
on that to go 5-0. With Cherry still in the box, the Night Terrors'
Marzipain was able to collect 8 unanswered points on the following jam,
and then Joy Collision went again to pick up 4 points against none for
Killer Kitten, who was on the business end of a colossal block from
Mibbs Breakin' Ribs that sent her careening into the VIP seats. At the
end of that 17-0 run, the Terrors were up 25-14, a margin that would
stay almost exactly the same as the teams traded victories over the
next six jams. On the period's last jam -- the only jam of the half
without a lead jammer -- Terrors blockers Frenzy Lohan and Sister
Midnight teamed up to bottle up Dolls jammer Cherrylicious for a
significant amount of time until Frenzy could finally take her down,
letting Terrors' jammer Pixie Rocket skate to a 7-3 victory. At the end
of the half, the score stood at Night Terrors 45, Junkyard Dolls 29.
Through
the first few jams of the second half, the teams again seemed evenly
matched, with every small margin victory for the Terrors being answered
in kind by the Dolls. On the fifth jam of the period, the Terrors'
blockers set up a grand slam point for their jammer Marzipain, as Joy
Collision, Rosie the Rioter and Nasty Trick all took turns taking down
Dolls' jammer Killer Kitten. That put the score at Night Terrors 59,
Junkyard Dolls 37, but on the very next jam, Dolls' blocker Mistress
May Eye was a guided missile on Terrors' jammer Mexican Fury, deploying
booty blocks and shoulder checks that kept the Fury trapped on her
opening lap long enough for Dolls' jammer Cherrylicious to lap her
twice. With that 10-0 jam, the Dolls were suddenly back to within
striking distance, just 12 points down at Terrors 59, Dolls 47 and
about 11 minutes left on the game clock. Clearly sensing momentum was
on the line in the next jam, the Terrors sent Joy Collision to the
jammer line on the next jam and put in the bruising Mibbs Breakin' Ribs
to block for her, and they did their jobs -- Joy sent opposing jammer
Ali Kaida sprawling as soon as the jammer whistle blew, while Mibbs
ripped open a path in the Dolls defense for Joy to follow, making for
an easy 4-0. Rosie the Rioter followed that up with a 4-1 over Coach
Ballbricker, and Joy came back to complete the trilogy with a 6-0 jam
over Schiesty McFeisty. With only about 6:30 left to play, the score
was Terrors 73, Dolls 48, and Terrors would hold that 25 point margin
right about there for the rest of the bout. Final score at the end of
40 minutes was Night Terrors 86, Junkyard Dolls 60.
Joy
Collision led all scorers with 31 points on 9 jams and a jammer point
differential of +21, but perhaps her most impressive stat was grabbing
lead jammer on 8 out of 9 jams for a gaudy 88% lead jammer percentage.
On the opposing bench, Cherrylicious put up 21 points on 10 jams to
lead the Dolls. The Terrors' Pixie Rocket had the highest average
points per jam, hitting 4.6 in her 5 jams.
The Night Terrors
earned 41 minors and 6 majors over the course of the game, while the
Junkyard Dolls received 65 minors and 6 majors. Rosie the Rioter was
the most penalized Night Terror, getting 9 minors and 1 major, while
Dolly Rocket led that category for the Dolls, hit with 7 minors and 2
majors. The Night Terrors completely controlled the lead jammer battle,
getting lead jammer on 20 out of 30 jams, while the Dolls were only
able to secure it on 8 of those 30.
Speed Regime 104, Mobtown Mods 62
In
the second match of the doubleheader, a understaffed but still very
effective Speed Regime team used almost every available weapon to
defeat a Mobtown Mods team still in the process of rebuilding from
injuries and departures, 104 to 62. The Speed Regime was down to 10
players, with effective blocker Cindy Lop-Her out with an arm injury,
tenacious pivot Dirty Jersey out of state, multiple-threat Buzz Kill
out for the season with a severe case of pregnancy, and feared blocker
Berzerker having returned to her native Australia after last month's
bout. The Mods were celebrating the return of their leading scorer from
last year, Lady Quebeaum, who was playing in her first bout of the 2007
season after suffering a broken ankle in March, but also mourning the
final CCRG game for one of its founding members, Mercy Less, who was
moving to New Mexico and Duke City Derby after the bout.
While
the final score seemed to reflect an overwhelming win for the Speed
Regime, the Mods played them tightly for most jams in the bout -- it
was a handful of major defensive lapses that accounted for the large
point spread. After a series of three closely-contested opening jams
that put the score at Speed Regime 9, Mobtown Mods 7, Stormin' Mormon
came to the line to jam for Speed Regime against Duchess of Torque for
the Mods, and it was bad news for the Mods. Speed Regime's Reckless
Ndangerment and Jules Burn pummeled Torque relentlessly, and the Mods'
blockers, focused on giving offensive help, twice missed Stormin'
coming around for a scoring pass. With no lead jammer on the jam,
Stormin was able to lap Torque twice in the course of putting up a 13-2
score on her, which brought the total to Speed Regime 22, Mobtown Mods
9. Tough breaks continued for the Mods when their jammer Penaltyna went
to the penalty box in the next jam, allowing Pistol Whip to put up a
4-0 jam on her, but the Mods defense stepped it up on the following
jam, with Siouxsie Slaughter and Angthrax battering Regime jammer Flo
Shizzle long enough for Penaltyna to get out of the box, claim lead
jammer, and put up a respectable 4 points to the 8 that Flo had already
gotten. Still, though, the momentum was all Speed Regime. With about 7
minutes to go in the half, Mods jammer Ang Thrax got lead jammer and
put up a 4-1 over Speed Regime's Deathany, who had been put on the
floor by Anarchy Kournikova. That put the score at Regime 39, Mods 17,
but the Regime won the last four jams of the half to leave the Mods in
a disheartening 60-26 hole.
The Speed Regime wasted little time
in severely undercutting the Mods' comeback hopes at the beginning of
the second half. On the period's third jam, Speed Regime's Psycho78
fell just one point short of tying the CCRG record for most points in a
single jam by running up a 17-2 jam over a penalized Ang Thrax, moving
the score to Speed Regime 82, Mobtown Mods 32. The Mods surprised the
Regime by firing right back, though, with Mods pivot Roxy Toxic putting
Regime jammer Reckless Ndangerment to the hardwood twice on the next
jam and letting Mods jammer Duchess of Torque get on the right side of
a double grand slam, running up 10 points to 0 for Reckless. The 40
point margin got stuck right there for the next 4 jams, though, with
each of them ending in 4-4 or 0-0 ties, and the Mods couldn't afford to
let so much time go by without chipping away at the Regime lead. While
the Mods once again played a much better second half than first -- in
the second half, the total score was Regime 44, Mods 36 -- their rough
first half sandbagged their chances for a comeback. When it was all
over, the scoreboard showed a 42 point victory for the Speed Regime --
Speed Regime 104, Mobtown Mods 62.
Psycho78 had a stellar game,
leading all scorers with 28 points over 6 jams, leading the jammer
point differential stat with +24, and getting lead jammer on 5 out of 6
jams for an 83% lead jammer percentage. For the Mods, Duchess of Torque
was right behind Psycho with 26 points on 9 jams. Speed Regime's
Stormin' Mormon led in average points per jam, averaging 9 points on
her two jams.
On the penalty side of things, the Regime racked
up 48 minors and 2 majors while the Mods were hit with 56 minors and 5
majors. Siouxsie Slaughter was the most penalized Mod, with 10 minors
and 1 major, while Pistol Whip got 11 minors and 1 major in her
services to the Regime. The Speed Regime had a small but significant
lead in the lead jammer battle, taking it on 12 out of 25 jams while
the Mods grabbed it on 10 of 25. The Speed Regime sent 8 of their 10
available skaters to the jammer line during the bout.
-----
With
only one bout left in the regular season, the Night Terrors' victory
guarantees them a spot in October's championship bout against the
currently undefeated Speed Regime. On September 16, Baltimore gets
treated to a preview of that championship clash, as the 0-5 Mobtown
Mods try again for their first win of 2007 against the 1-4 Junkyard
Dolls, and the 4-1 Night Terrors attempt to equalize their season
record with the 5-0 Speed Regime.

My impression is that East Coast bouts are usually tighter officiated,
with some notable exceptions. But then again, I live somewhere between
the East Coast and the West Coast.

I think it will be easier to characterize after the Championship

Come cheer for your west coast sisters from WA Sept. 29-30 in downtown Austin - it's gonna be a riot! You'll not only get to see the best teams on the planet, but you'll make friends from all over the Derby community. For groups of 14 skaters or more, TXRG is reserving rows (to make up for VIP floor seats selling out so quickly.) Drop me a line with any questions - I'll be glad to help your league find reasonably priced hotels and transportation. Nationals happens once a year - don't wait till next year to experience it!
Best from Austin,

There's a nice new feature up on the Texas Shootout web site, which
there is a web link to in the "Links" section here.
http://www.wftdachampionships.com The new feature is a Visitor's
Guide to Austin in the "More Info" section. It has very good
information and a few coupons to be used.
Just to add a couple of other recommended places to eat if you get
the chance while in Austin. And no, I'm not getting paid for these
recommendations.
Stallion Grill-5201 Airport Blvd--Super home cooking, but only serves
lunch 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. I'm always looking
for an excuse to get over there. They have daily specials at $5.99
that includes the specialty of the day which can range from Catfish
and Gumbo to Chicken Fried Steak (best in Austin in my opinion) to
Flame Grilled Chicken Breast. The specials and regular entrees come
with two vegitables and a salad. The veggies taste too good to be
veggies!
Sam's Barbecue-2000 E. 12th Street--The ribs (pork of course) are to
die for. This is soul barbecue at it's best, and if you happen to be
in this tin shed-looking eatery, check out the many stars' pictures
that have stopped by to have their Austin barbecue fill. And the
brisket is delicious too!
On the whole though I would say the visitors guide has done a very
good job of including many restaurants I've eaten at and enjoyed, but
if you get a chance to stop on by Sams or the Stallion, it's worth
your while.

I've seen an old school game in that facility, and it's perfect for
roller derby.
You may not be able to drag all your fans there. You have to draw from
the locals, but you have a whole lot of potential there. You can get
people from as far as Hollister and Gilroy, not to mention Santa Cruz
and that whole section of the BA that just never makes the north trip.
You'll find out who your real fans are from the north bay, and you'll
make plenty of new fans in the south bay I'm sure.
It may take some time for the word to get out, but you already knew
that. You just have to be able to stick it out long enough to do that.
I've got one bit of free (worth what you pay for it) advice: promote
local, promote local, promote local.
You know the Derby Dolls sympathize with your plight.

Yes I am too. It took a while for BADG to decide to come here. Let's just say that the price of such a venue is "challenging" and requires an increase in their ticket prices. But if the BADG can fill the place, all will be well. BADG insisted that the venue they skate in allow the sale of beer, several places said to their faces "We don't want your kind in our facility."
BADG is based in the San Francisco/Oakland area, this is where the majority of their fans are. Going to San Jose in the Southbay (the origin of my handle) is a risk. For me it is wonderful, I simply hop onto the light rail and ride to the station that is right in front of the Civic Auditorium. But will BADG fans follow? The San Francisco and Oakland transit systems are well connected and even further strengthen with BART (a regional transit system), but BART does not go to San Jose.
Basically if you live in San Francisco or Oakland you can crawl out of a pub in either of the cities, any time of night and be taken home. The links to San Francisco and Oakland from San Jose are few. BADG has started their bouts an hour earlier than they normally do, so that when the bout is over you have time to catch the last bus/train back to San Francisco or Oakland. If you miss it, you're staying over night in San Jose. Good Luck! Of course you can drive, but in a major metropolitan area that requires some planning.
So will BADG fans travel to San Jose, an hour earlier than normal and pay an increased ticket price, with iffy transit systems, to see our girls skate? Of course we are plastering San Jose with flyers to advertise the bouts to get San Jose residents to come, but it's like starting all over again.

If I were a Bay Area Derby Girl, I'd be very excited about skating in
this facility.
Phil
I have a bunch of these "jar opener" type rubber things (about 5in
square) in red, white and blue. We use them to mark out our track
instead of cones. They stick to the floor and dont move but are much
better than cones!! Let me know if anyone would like some! Just pay me
for shipping! I looked and looked and could not find any that were not
printed with logos or something and that were not really expencive.
These I got on ebay for 12.! We love them.

I'm looking for Derby stories!!!If you can write, and have a story to tell...PLEASE send it to me!
After a grueling practice in a parking garage with just 2 other girls, I wrote a narrative of what happened that night on our team/league yahoo page. The responses I got were so sweet and encouraging it got me thinking.
I know I can't be the only one who can write (meaning able to use proper spelling, grammar and have a little bit of wit.)AND, I am sure we ALL have more than one Derby related story that is either funny, or dramatic or sweet etc. in regards to a practice, a bout, Rollercon etc.
What if I could get more stories from girls from all the leagues across the country? Guys too…I totally appreciate the refs and support crews as well as significant others of skaters so please feel free to contribute.I am sure there are hundreds of great stories out there.I would love to hear yours and I think others would too.
So think, write, and show me what you got!TALK DERBY TO ME!!!
Oops. Fight Crew's record is 1-2, not 1-3.

Please keep us informed on how Coos County Rollergirls are doing. If
you have a scrimmage or bout, please don't hesitate to put it up
either in the calendar section or in the Photos section, Future Event
Posters album. That keeps me in the loop when I am writing my
weekend roller derby events summary.
Coos Bay looks like a very beautiful community, the kind of place I
would like to visit in August when summer is at its hottest in
Texas. Here are some pictures of Coos Bay, Oregon.

The best to you and your leaguemates always!
