From Rumbline Rose,

Our league photographer just got the pics up last night (see more at
www.steveflusche.com )and I'm sending you The HSH as 2006 DDD
Champions. O'Raney (in front in wheelchair) is holding the golden
skate in her lap. She shattered her ankle in an exhibition bout on
Fremont St. at RollerCon. This championship win is dedicated to her.

Final Scores of the Championship

HSH vs. Slaughterers : 55-39
Wrecking Crew vs. Suicide Shifters : 72-46

1st place CHAMPIONS! - High Seas Hotties
2nd place - The Slaughterers
3rd place - Wrecking Crew
4th place - Suicide Shifters

One other note, when I put up Dallas Derby Devils Roster I misscopied
one skater's name, but will be down in Austin Sunday at Stars across
Texas. It would not be fair if I forgot Lickity Splittail who is
also on the Dallas Derby Devils Roster.

Thanks to Rumblin Rose for all her help on the roster information,
the championship picture, and the information on the Sunday bout.

What an opportunity it is to see eight of the best flat track roller
derby teams in the United States skate Saturday. Bumbershoot music
festival will host a roller derby tournament at Key Arena in
Seattle. Key Arena is the home arena of the NBA Seattle Supersonics,
and I hear seating will be limited to 6,000.

Starting off will be group one which includes the National Champion
Texas Rollergirls. Also in their group is Boston, Madison, and
Kansas City. Action starts for group one at noon with warm-ups,
introductions, and the first 20-minute skating period between Boston
and Texas. Games to follow the first game include Madison vs. Kansas
City, and then Madison vs. Texas. Boston should play Kansas City
shortly after 2 p.m., and then Boston will play Madison. Around 3
p.m. Texas is scheduled to play Kansas City to complete the first
group.

My feeling is that Texas should probably be favored in this group,
although potentially Madison could be a real grudge match since the
Madison Dairyland Dolls beat Texas Rollergirl league team the Hot Rod
Honeys by 14 points in Austin. I think both Texas and Madison are
looking forward to this match. The difference in this Texas all-star
squad is they will have eight jammers on a 14-person squad. In
Austin earlier this year, Madison faced only two regular jammers for
the Hot Rod Honeys will Lucille Brawl being unable to skate for all
practical purposes (limited to three jams because of an ankle
injury). But Madison has proved they are a very physical team and
this game scheduled to start around 1:45 p.m. may be a "can't miss"
game for roller derby fans.

Group two should start warm-ups around 3:30 with the first game
scheduled for 4 p.m. This group consists of host Rat City, Bay Area,
Carolina, and Minnesota. The group opens up 20-minute qualifying
periods with San Francisco vs. Minnesota, and then Carolina vs.
Seattle. That is another game that fans will not want to miss with
two very talented teams. Around 5 o'clock, Minnesota will play
Carolina, and then San Francisco will play Seattle. Then around 6
p.m. San Francisco will play Carolina and the final game of the
preliminary round will be Minnesota against Seattle.

Each group will have a ranking after the round robin and quite
probably a team will move to the championship game with a 3-0
record. But you may have a tie between teams that are 2-1 and then
it is likely that point differential would determine who advances to
the championship game and who advances to the grudge match or what
some may more commonly known as the consolation game.

The consolation game looks like it should start around 8 p.m. with a
20-minute period, and will be followed by the championship first game
period. Some time around 9 o'clock the consolation final period
should start with the championship 2nd half to follow. The
Bumbershoot awards post game should start at around 10 p.m.

In my opinion the teams to watch out for this tournament include
Madison and Texas from Group One, and Seattle and Carolina in Group
Two. I like Carolina as a very athletic team, and they are very
explosive. They will not have one of the best skaters I have ever
seen on this trip, Roxy Rockett. Violet Femme who was not in Austin
when the Carolina Rollergirls beat the Hell Marys of the Texas
Rollergirls will replace her. I understand she is one of the best
jammers around, and they will need her along with Teflon Donna who
recently scored 98 points in a game. And almost every all-star on
the Carolina Rollergirls is capable of jamming.

Madison is a very powerful team. Cracker Jack and Jewels of Denile
are excellent pivots, with a squad of very powerful blockers holding
teams down. Mouse is the featured jammer.

My guess is that Seattle should be favored. Their best team Derby
Liberation Front played a fairly close game in Texas against the TXRG
champs the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers. They will be playing at home,
and may be most familiar with the style of officiating.

The Texas Rollergirls should be an interesting team. Two skaters
will not be participating from the national championship team. Pivot
Hydra, although she will be coaching, will not skate along with Dust
Devil MVP Eight Track who has retired. And teams will be allowed to
skate fourteen team members. That means that the Texecutioners will
add power/speed jammer Dinah Mite, who is also the leading scorer in
league regular season competition. Also added is second leading
scorer during regular season of the Texas Rollergirls Rice Rocket.
Add in speed jammer Trouble, power jammer Cat Tastrophe, a healthy
Lucille Brawl, Honky Tonk jammers Buckshot Betsy, and Loose Tooth
Lulu, along with Hustler jammer Barbarella and you have a potential
scoring machine.

But the TXRG squad's strength may be their pivot position. Sparkle
Plenty and Slim Kickens can be tremendous defensive pivots. Dinah
Mite is also an extremely effective pivot, and Cat Tastrophe is
another good pivot. But how can the Texecutioners replace Eight
Track? Although Heartbreaker Jen Etonic will move up from an
alternate position on the National Championship team, and power
blocker Derringer can be intimidating, it still may be difficult to
replace the size and power of Eight Track. But this team will be
blazing fast, and it should be interesting to see if they make it to
the championship game, exactly how all that speed will play out.

All in all it should be a great experience for roller derby fans to
see these eight top quality teams competing. I will roll in and
catch most of the tournament on Saturday, and will try to get a
report back on this web site on Sunday.

Mike Judge's latest flick, IDIOCRACY, is getting royally screwed by
Fox. They are giving it NO promotion, not running trailers,
only putting it out in 100 theaters and then sticking it straight to
dvd. Not cool at all.

I know many rollergirls were used as extras in this
movie and I even had a speaking part, but who knows
what made it to the film (and what hit the cutting
room floor).
We all need to come out in hoardes to go see this film
and STICK it to Fox. We need to show the Mike Judge crew some
serious "Austin Love".
Mike Judge has been a HUGE supporter of the Texas Rollergirls, and we
need to give back. Tell your friends. Tell everyone. Have them go
see IDIOCRACY in the theater before it disappears!! !

Cat and I have been friends for a long time. Hey, if Mike Judge,
creator Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill is a roller derby
fan, maybe derby fans and skater can find it in their heart to back
him up.

Sunday evening, Roller Derby will come to Austin in a tournament
format. At Playland Skate Center, at 8812 McCann in North Austin, the
Stars Across Texas tournament will start with a first round game of
Alamo City's Tejanas versus the Special Ops of Assassination City
Derby. Then Houston's HaRD Knocks plays the Dallas Derby Devils.
Each team will skate 15-minute periods. The winners of this round
will play in a championship game, with the losers of the first round
game playing a consolation game. The winner of the championship game
will play a "super jam" against a squad of Texas Rollergirls.

Who will make it to the final game? Well, earlier this year
Assassination City beat the Dallas Derby Devils at South By Southwest
in a qualifying period skate off. But both teams, plus Houston also
played in the Dust Devil Tournament in Tucson in February and picked
up a win. So they should be basically even except maybe since
Houston has it's season championship game less than a week away, and
several top players will not be playing, it may not be full
strength. In addition, broken ankles have knocked out two of the
best players in the year in Death By Chocolate and Team Captain
Catazon. Alamo City has no Interleague experience, but they have
potentially six solid jammers, and some pretty good interior blockers
in Copper Penny and Megahurtz. Even though I think they have all
sorts of talent and potential, still their lack of Interleague play
makes them an underdog.

Tickets are $12 in advance and may be purchased from
http://www.txrollergirls.com, or may be purchased at the door for
$15. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. This special bout features live music
from The Jungle Rockers (Austin, Texas) and Charley Horse (L.A.,
California).

Below are the player rosters for the teams with positions, which are

I will give you a scouting report on how to beat the Texas
Rollergirls. First of all their captains are first year skaters so
don't panic. Secondly, they are jammer light, since eight other
jammers have headed to Seattle on that all-star team. Try to wear
their jammers out if possible. Thirdly, find somebody who can joke
with Tomcat. She has a hilarious sense of humor. Next, have one of
you blockers study up on Molecular Biology so she can talk shop with
Cheap Trixie.

Then, double team Muffin Tumble. She hates that! Finally be sure
you congratulate Speedy Marie for her long career with the Texas
Rollergirls. She is retiring after this year so this is probably her
last game. Come to think about it, Tomcat is retiring too, although
she is thinking about changing her name and coming back to skate for
the Texas League that bids the highest. Mainly, have some fun!

Skate Ranch says skaters all over the country have crashed their website and
phone lines
trying to get their address and time for speed skate tonight. It's located at
1162 Maiden
Lane, Lizard Lick, North Carolina, down past the Sonic behind the Shady Lady on
your left.
Talk to Rufus out back. He has your USARS cards, courtesy of the Carolina
Rollergirls. If
you're gettin this email that is. Oh, at Rufus has a lazy right eye. He don't
like people
lookin at it wrong. Just saying.

Me too Roxy.  I think Box Noxious actually wrote one on myspace to me that disappeared into myspace's rings of Saturn (lost messages).  I'll check to see if he put it up on his blog and repost it.  He is up against the gun heading out to Seattle.

The featured team is the champions of the Dallas Derby Devils league.
I haven't received a final score yet from Sunday night's game, but
here is the Roller Derby Is Sport home page tribute to the High Seas
Hotties from Dallas (Arlington, Lewisville, and Plano too). I believe
they were undefeated this year, which is a pretty solid accomplishment
for the top team in a league with 100 skaters.

Thanks Hurt! I really appreciate it. Hopefully all the preparations
for Bumbershoot are going well! It is pretty tough for me to wait
until Saturday morning to hit the road without be very excited. I
have never been to Seattle, and never ever dreamed I could go to
watch eight roller derby teams from around the country skating at a
major venue like Key Arena.

Thanks Rice Rocket! Congrats to the High Sea Hotties. Now I hope to
find one of their team pictures so I can put it up here on the
homepage to give them a litle more visual kudos.

See you in Seattle.

Congratulations to the High Seas Hotties for winning the DDD's first
championship game! In my excitement, I completely forgot to write down
the score. The Slaughterers were a serious threat to the Hotties, who
had dominated all season, and until last night, had never been behind
on the scoreboard. I think the Slaughterers took second place only by
about 10 points.

Meanwhile, the Wrecking Crew pulled together after their last defeat
to play a very strong game against the Suicide Shifters. Both teams
were playing extremely well, and I've been so impressed by how much
they've improved over the season! I think next season is going to be
very interesting... especially with the addition of the fifth team -
the Death Row Rumblers!

Both games were extremely intense and full of hard hits, great
defense, and lots of great teamwork. Now the girls will get to work
together to fight for the Governor's Cup.

Congrats to all the Dallas Derby Devils for finishing your first
season so successfully!!!

I believe that some of the Texas Rollergirls have already headed up to
Seattle as early as today. This is a great time to escape Texas, and
head north for 80 degree highs! Other skaters from Austin, will be
heading into Seattle on Thursday. I on the other hand will be getting
there Saturday as the tournament is underway. You may think, Phil,
isn't that poor planning? I would go along with that, except I got a
Southwest Air Fare from Austin to Seattle for $99 on Saturday. So for
about $100 less than a Friday flight, I will be a little late.

I am still trying to figure out the quickest way to get from the
airport to the Seattle Hotel downtown, and from that Hotel to the 1.4
miles to Key Arena. I think I have worked out a deal for a Bumbershoot
pass from somebody who can't make it to Seattle who had purchased one.
I am doing this in exchange for trade. I will be downloading photos of
skaters and announcers, and getting them printed out at Walgreens in
Austin, and buying a silver sharpie, and bringing them all to Seattle
to get autographed.

While I am away, and in particular on Monday I will be in transit from
Seattle to Las Vegas. You may think, hey Phil, that's a lousy excuse
to make a trip to Vegas, but the air fare was actually cheaper if I
flew on Monday to Vegas, and on Thursday back to Austin, than if I flew
on Friday to Seattle, and back to Austin on Sunday. But the point is I
will not have access to approve posts. Some of you that I know I have
approved as unmoderated, but some of your yahoo names, I don't
recognize so please be patient.

If anybody has any posts on Monday concerning the Stars Across Texas
event, please make them. Maybe I can find a volunteer moderator who
will check to make sure that any on-topic posts are approved. Tuesday
and Wednesday in Vegas will be easy to check the group from business
services. Thursday I will be back in town, and Saturday I will be
heading down to Houston for their championship game.

All and all it will be a busy week. Please do not hesitate to make any
posts, whether it be about Bumbershoot in Seattle, Stars Across Texas
in Austin, the event in Denver between Pikes Peak and Rocky Mountain
teams, or any other events that may be going on.

And thanks for participating, and reading this yahoo group.

Thanks Tatum! That is an impressive victory. Hope you all had fun
skating oudoors on a track in the outfield in a baseball stadium.
That has to be a unique experience.

I hope to make it to the latter portion of the playoff period where
Madison skates against the Texas Rollergirls. I believe that period
is scheduled to start at 1:45 p.m. and I am scheduled to land in
Seattle at 1 p.m. I will get to check in and drop my bags, and then
hook it up 1.4 miles from downtown to Key Arena. I don't have a pass,
so I am hoping they are seeling passes at the arena. But I suspect it
won't be quite that easy so I may miss seeing you all play in that
crucial preliminary round 20 minute period.

Thanks again for the information. There will be plenty of info coming
up this week about the structure of the tournament and the teams
participating.

Thanks for giving credit where credit is due, Lucha Dora. It is
always fun watching Hottie skate because not only can she jam, but
she often delivers some takeouts at one time or another during the
game. It was great seeing her take care of Anita Spanking of the
Dragon Divas. And glad you pointed this out because now I get to
wish her a Happy Birthday!

Thanks for noticing this gesture of ACRG sportswomanship, Phil. It
was actually Hottie McNaughty, though, who tended to Nita. She's
the one who flew on top of her and, upon realizing that she had
slammed into her head pretety hard, stayed with her to make sure she

Great to hear from you Catazon! Hopefully you will get the surgery
done early this coming week so you can be with your traveling team
next Sunday. I will be out of town in Seattle, but I've a hotel
reservation not too far from the after party on September 9th.

Get well and healthy as soon as possible and I plan on seeing you in
two weeks.

I'm still waiting on the surgery to repair the ankle. I've got what
they call an x-fix on my leg right now, that allowed me to leave the
hospital on Thursday. As soon as a small abrasion on the top of my
ankle heals, I'll go back in for the surgery. Hopefully Tuesday or
Wednesday, since Monday I'm going to see the surgeon that did DBC's
ankle. That way I can at least sit on the bench at Stars Across
Texas. If I don't get in early in the week, I won't make it because I
can't go anywhere with this metal contraption screwed into my bones.
Otherwise, I will be watching my Brawlers take the HRD Championship on
Sept. 9th, and since I won't be skating, will have much more time to
get to know the fans and thank them for their support, like you, PHIL!

Thanks Chris for the excellent report. One of the things I
understand because I have officiated in basketball before, is you
are trying to focus on your job. In most games I didn't know what
the score was, and didn't want to know the score. The only exception
was late in a quarter and in particular late in the game, when the
clock becomes absolutely crucial in certain situations.

It sounds like the Tai-Chitas had a marvelous comeback in the last
period. I suspect you were so busy watching for fouls in what I
have heard was a "brutal" match. But perhaps everybody was backing
off and doing everything the could to avoid minors. I don't know
what the most common minors are, but 50 minutes into a game you
think the skaters should pretty well know what is being called. And
I suppose it's good that I don't skate and ref, because if I heard
anybody talking negatively to skaters, I would be calling
unsportsladylike conduct. Certainly in basketball if I hear trash
talking going on it's a technical foul, probably proceeded by a
warning.

But from what I have seen with Carolina, it is one of the cleanest
skating leagues around, perhaps because it called so tightly.
Personally, I think that is the way it should be called, and the way
the sport should be skated. That is one of the reasons I have such
an interest in Carolina, having met a fair number of their skaters
when they were in Austin in interleague competition.

I know next week when I am in Seattle I will be following them
closely and if injuries permit them, I suspect they will be one of
the top teams in the Bumbershoot tournament.

Again thanks Chris for the report. It is wonderful to read about
the many athletes I have met from Carolina skating in their league
championship game.

I'm still a little stunned.  I don't remember most of the game very clearly, so this won't accurately reflect the details of the game.  I will, however, try to give you my observations and thoughts as the game progressed.  We were so busy trying to keep on top of the game that I really didn't get much of a chance to figure out what was going on at any point in time.  At the end, I knew the Tai Chi-Tahs had won, but I couldn't really tell you what the score was at just about any point in the game.  Looking at the scoreboard logs I can see what was happening on the scoreboard but during the game I had no idea what the score was at various points ... just too busy.

And, for what it is worth, another sell-out crowd!

Period One
The Debutante Brawlers OWNED the first half of the first period.  They came out and nearly put the game away instantly.  In the first few jams they put such a beat-down on the Tai Chi-Tahs that I thought the game might have been over right there.  They certainly set the tone.  To the Chi-Tahs' credit, they managed to put together a response on the scoreboard at least ... even if they couldn't match the punishment the Debs were handing out.

There were alot of girls headed into the crowd during this period and a few stops due to injury.

DEFINING MOMENT:  The fantastic and super-fabulous Eva Lye left the game early due to a pulled hamstring.  Playing without her would be a real challenge for the Debs.  She normally plays pivot but is also a very good jammer.  One jam in the first period, 19 points for Eva.

  Current Score:
  Debutante Brawlers = 61
  Tai Chi-Tahs = 53

FAVORITE MOMENT:  "Marcy Killer is your lead jammer!"  Easily the cutest Carolina Rollergirl, it was great to hear Rockerboy's announcement.  She's a rookie skater this year and was pretty pleased to get lead jammer in her first jam for the Tai Chi-Tahs.  She'd subbed for the Debutante Brawlers last game and jammed for them, but jamming for her own team was something she was looking foward to ... and she's my favorite Carolina Rollergirl.

Period Two
We're calling majors like pitches in baseball.  My recollection is alot of sloppy play and majors during this period mostly from the Tai Chi-Tahs.  They are really having a hard time matching the strength of the Brawlers.  The penalty stats aren't quite in yet and I really want to see them ... but my recollection is this was a messy period.

The Brawlers are also exceptionally good at playing a 20' trap and several Tai Chi-Tahs got caught way out from the pack during this period.  They use every weapon in their arsenal to control the game ... when the Debs execute on their plan they can be scary good.

The period ends with several players with multiple majors.  Luckily for them they aren't three of the same kind (and thus an expulsion).  The penalty staff are having a hard time keeping up with the paperwork.  We call several official time-outs so they can straighten out the tangle of penalties and punishments.

   Current Score:
   Debutante Brawlers = 113
   Tai Chi-Tahs = 101

Period Three
There were a couple of VERY key moments in this period.  I'd rotated to the center-ref position so I witnessed more of the bout during this period instead of the skaters directly in front of me.

DEFINING MOMENT:  On one jam the Deb jammer can't make it through the pack without serious punishment.  The Chi-Tah blocking crew are firing on all cylinders and driving over her and taunting her.  She manages to make lead jammer but is caught up in the moment and doesn't see or hear her bench yelling for her to call off the jam before the Chi-Tahs score.  Part of the problem in any sport is getting too distracted.   This is a problem of being too absorbed in the game.

DEFINING MOMENT:  Of course, the Debs are the masters of manipulation.  Not much after the Chi-Tah jammer breaks through the pack closely followed by Teflon Donna from the Debs.  Donna is chatting constantly and the Chi-Tah jammer is doing her best to ignore her.  Unfortunately, ignoring her is exactly what Donna wants and when the Chi-Tah is sufficiently distracted Teflon Donna sends her flying off the track.  I have to confess I'd love to have some skaters mic'd up for the bouts ... maybe not for all the fans to hear, but I'd like to hear it!

For the last half of the period many of the girls are sitting at 3 minors.  No one wants to get their 4th minor while they are jamming so most of the teams are re-arranging lineups on the fly.  Princess America continues to jam ... apparrently not realizing she's at 3 minors.  I spoke with her after the game and she was in shock ... she would not have jammed had she realized and instead would have sent a sub.  As it is, she jammed cleanly and it didn't haunt her team.  This same situation nearly cost the Tai Chi-Tahs their first game (jammer sitting due to penalties in the final minutes of the game) and I wasn't sure if it would bite them in this one.

In Raleigh in the summer it is hot and humid.  Twice girls fall on the track during this period and we have to stop the game to clean up the unsafe moisture (sweat) on the track.  Or is it perspiration?  Nah, I don't think derby girls perspire, I think they sweat.  Either way there are a few large streaks on the floor that need to be cleaned as they are hazardous and this stops the clocks.

One of these stopages occurs with just under a minute left.  The Tai Chi-Tahs have the lead, but due to the official time-out they can't run the clock.  This gives the Debutante Brawlers a chance to win or tie the game ... but substitue Penelope Bruz from the Trauma Queens manages to get lead jammer for the Tai Chi-Tahs and keep them ahead for the win!

   Current Score:
   Debutante Brawlers = 142
   Tai Chi-Tahs = 149

There were a few injuries, most notably to Eva Lye who pulled her hamstring.  She only jammed once (for 19 points!) and I know the Debs were missing her.  Towards the end alot of players were going down and alot of them were still kinda sore during scrimmage last night.

That's it for now.  The Carolina Rollergirls are headed into four months straight of interleague play ... and I know the skaters are happy to be able to play and train WITH each other as opposed to AGAINST each other as they do during the home season.

Next stop:  Bumbershoot!

After that:  The Carolina Rollergirls host the Sin City Rollergirls at our brand-spanking new home ... Sept 16 is the date I believe.  Everything will be bigger and better in Dorton Arena ... including room for more butts in seats.  You can find info and a link to buy tickets online here:  http://www.carolinarollergirls.com/events.htm

Thanks Death By Chocolate,

I had heard from another Houston source she was going under the
knife yesterday. I know that the Houston ladies treat their injured
skaters very well, as you can testify.

Catazon is one of those ladies I have not met in person, but has been
extremely encouraging to me as a peson who writes about roller
derby. I can't wait to meet her on September 9th, hopefully at the
event if she is up and around by then. If not, well I'll work
something out since I plan on staying in Houston over night that
evening.

Thanks for straightenting out that bit of information.

Would you believe I used to do standup comedy on the same stage as
Howard? I came on early and made the comics who came on later look a
whole lot better! When I used to do it at that same location, the
name of the club was The Laugh Stop. And my roller derby name,
Elactralosis This!, was taken from an adjacent shop in that strip
mall...Jean's Electralosis. And my line for that was, why do jeans
need electralosis?

I'll be there Friday night of course, and see what Howard looks like
15 years after I last saw him.

Concerning Stars Across Texas, I have read a description of the
tournament. I found it very confusing. I think most likely what
will happen is you will have an opening round of two games. Each
team will skate 15 minute periods. The first round will have
Assassination City against Alamo City, and Dallas Derby Devils
against the Houston Roller Derby skaters.

To my thinking it is most likely that after a half-time break (stike
up the band or bands), the winners will skate against each other for
another 15 minute period to determine the overall winner, and who
will skate against the Texas Rollergirls, and the losers will skate
in a consolation game of sorts.

I assume the periods are 15 minutes, instead of 20 minutes because of
the "super jam" at the end of the night. But what exactly is a
superjam? Does that mean that one jammer will have to skate the
entire 10 minutes, or is this basically a 10 minute period, that
allow jammmers to cutoff a jam.

I also have a question concerning the rosters published on the Texas
Rollergirl site. My understanding is that those rosters are subject
to revision. I know for instance team captain for Houston Catazon
was in surgery Wednesday concerning a compound fracture above the
ankle, and a dislocated knee. I also know that Alamo City is working
with 18 girls on their team, and presumably the roster size will be
reduced according to how many girls it is legal to have on the active
roster. And I suppose with the Dallas Derby Devils skating this
Sunday night, they may have some adjustments due to injuries. So are
those rosters set in stone (hopefully not!)?

Thanks for any enlightening explanations.
