OK Trigger Mortis and Made n' Texas, this is a chance to get your
league skaters into a film they are probably going to want to see for
free. And of course any of you Dallas area league folks know how to
pass the word on to your league.

Enjoy!

Carmen is Captain of the Psych Ward Sirens and one of the more
encouraging peoople I know in Houston. She loves her roller derby and
deserves a birthday shout out, if that is what this is.

Of course she's probably out of the country in some place like Costa
Rico on some sail boat or someting. But if she's not, well it's her
birthday and she deserves some congrats from her huge number of friends.

One of the tough things about championship games is when you have friends on both teams, and your friends and both teams are competitive, you know there is going to be some talking.  The best thing about that situation is you are going to have some really happy friends after the game on Sunday night you can congratulate for winning the championship.

What I am looking forward to is an extremely competitive game, that is skated clean and hard.  I am looking for skaters from each team staying within the rules of the game and coming out winners because they will leave their best effort out on the track and will be able to leave the track with their heads held high win or lose.

This comment kind of nauseates me. The Hell Marys you mention below
are Hell Marys now.
Girls switch teams all of the time on our league.
If you look at the Hotrods roster, and listened to their intro at
their last game, (they proudly stated that ) they have many girls
that came to them from different teams.
Tinkerhell
Dagger Deb
Miso Fresh
Morphine
Rollin' Sweet
I believe these fine women are Hotrods all of the way. I'm sure
their fans think so, too.

I have no idea how this game is going to go. On paper the Hell Marys
have a stronger squad, but the Hotrod Honeys, even with their
injuries have been very impressive teamwise on the track this year.
I would say these two teams are the most popular teams in the league
with the fans. I have no idea how the fan division will go for this
bout, although my personal opinion is that the Hotrod Honeys may have
the largest fans base, and the Honeys fans are almost as hungry for a
championship as are the skaters.

I'm not saying this is a bitter rivalry, but the Hotrod Honey fans,
and maybe some of the skaters, don't really consider the Hell Marys
to be the Hell Marys because of the transfer of three all-stars from
the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers.

I think the Hell Marys fans, and maybe some of the skaters, feel they
have been in last place for so long they'll take any help they can
get and the championship trophy. And since the former Heartbreakers
are on the team and they are wearing plaid, they are Hell Marys any
way you look at it.

I hear the trash talking has been going on at league practices, and
maybe even since the first game. I think that the Hotrod Honeys
consider themselves undefeated, and not the Hell Marys since they
were beating the red plaid squad in June when the lights went out at
Playland. I think the Hell Marys will tell the team in black and
pink, that didn't count because it was only a half, and we're a
better second half team plus we didn't have Lady X and now we do.

So take your choice. I favor the Hotrod Honeys in a close game, but
I also think with more depth at the jammer position, the Hell Marys
are capable of winning by 20 or 30. This game could go either way as
far as I'm concerned.

For some of us, Saturday will actually be spent in preparation for
the game, making team related items like pom poms and banners. And
then there is this evening where there will be a pep rally at Wahoos
Tacos, 509 Rio Grand in downtown Austin. This should be interesting
as fans and all four teams gather to drink some liquid refreshments
and listen to some rock and roll. And maybe some will even be
talking some roller derby!

From all that I hear, this is going to be one heck of a bout. Two
undefeated, closely matched teams... it makes me jealous that I'm no longer
living in Austin. It would definitely be a must-see.

Even the "consolation" game will be worth watching. We refs do chat about

We need "Hell on Wheels" quotes from derby girls!!!!

Hello all!

We're assembling our press kit and have compiled some quotes from
press outlets. We are also figuring to see if any derby skaters
and/or fans would like to send us their quotes about the film. So
if you've seen the film and would like to send us a sentence or two
about it for use in our publicity material, please do!

Here are some of the press quotes we are already using:
"Hell on Wheels is an epic doc. It's fast, fun, and inspiring."
- Chris Gore (founder, Film Threat Magazine)
"The kind of twists, drama, cat fights and compound fractures that
only happen in real life. …the story is extremely compelling,
sometimes laugh-out-loud outrageous and above all inspiring."
- Ain't It Cool News
"Hell on Wheels is a killer documentary about the Austin all-women's
roller-derby leagues that inadvertently launched a nationwide (and
now worldwide) revival of the sport."
- Salt Lake City Weekly
"Hell on Wheels is a fascinating story and a fun movie."
- Cinematical
In addition to a blurb about the flick, we would love to include
your skater name, position, team name and league name.

I think it'd be a fun way to convey the vibe of this generation of
derby women and would help us out a good deal. If y'all wanna
participate, please don't post stuff here, but email me your blurbs
at:
Bob at crashcamfilms dot com
bob@...

thanks a bunch!

We have screenings coming up in many places, so if you have not yet
seen the flick, we hope to get it to you soon!

Hell on Wheels is proud to announce the Dallas premiere of the
documentary about the birth of the modern era roller derby movement
courtesy of the 20th Annual Dallas Video Festival.

Hell on Wheels takes a from-the-trenches look at the dizzying clash
of athleticism, exhibitionism, egos, politics and business that is
modern-era roller derby. A group of hard-hitting Texas women
overcome myriad obstacles in resurrecting and revamping the sport,
only to find internal strife ripping the fledgling organization
apart. Two leagues emerge from the clash, and what follows ignites
an international roller derby revival.

Filmed over a four year period, filmmakers Bob Ray (director) and
Werner Campbell (producer) captured the genesis of this rowdy
sport. Bob Ray is a writer/director in Austin, Texas whose works
includes the critically acclaimed narrative feature Rock Opera,
music videos for Riverboat Gamblers and Nashville Pussy, and several
short films and animation. Hell on Wheels marks his documentary
feature debut. Werner Campbell has been working in independent
media since 1995. His web site www.alternativefilm.com was an early
pioneer of streaming video, showcasing short films from all over the
world and providing industry commentary and interviews with
independent filmmakers, including Lloyd Kaufman and D.A.
Pennebaker.

Edited by Conor O'Neill (Murderball), with an original score by …And
You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Hell on Wheels is both an
action packed sports film as well as a dramatic story of the
creation of the first two all-girl roller derby leagues: The
Lonestar Rollergirls and the Texas Rollergirls.

"For 20 years, the Dallas Video Festival has celebrated independent
vision from the subversive to the sublime: from intelligent, witty
30-second television commercials, mesmerizing video art, compelling
documentaries, surrealistic animation, innovative digital features,
intelligent, kid-friendly fare, thought-provoking panels,
interdisciplinary performances, and narrative shorts that surprise,
inspire and entertain. We're known for being authentically quirky,
unapologetically independent, intellectual and irreverent.
Celebrities aren't the stars here, your ideas are."

The fest runs from July 31 through August 5. Films will screen at
the Angelika Film Center and the Dallas Theater Center.

I've reffed at flamingo banks and I've reffed at fremont street...

I wouldn't call the fremont street surface wildly unsafe ... at last
year's rollercon it was 'okay' for skating, especially with outdoor
wheels. However the waves in the surface and the unfamiliar surface
itself make it not a particularly good place to hold wftda-sanctioned
high-quality top-notch derby. There are a couple of drain plugs and
manhole covers which people (especially refs) have to make sure to
avoid. But the cracks themselves didn't seem to present much of a
problem, safety-wise.

But it's a *terrific* place for attracting attention! As long as
people aren't ridiculously emotionally invested in winning at all
costs, it's a total hoot to skate in front of the vegas tourists.

There was one bad injury that I knew of last year on Fremont Street -
a skater from Dallas broke an ankle (?) when joining the Angel City v
Salt Lake exhibition. I didn't get a close-up view of it, but those
who did tell me it was just an old-fashioned spill gone wrong,
sidewalk cracks or otherwise.

New Champion to Be Crowned Sunday Night

Two undefeated teams will go after the Texas Rollergirls league championship Sunday in Austin, Texas.  The Hotrod Honeys will take on the Hell Marys in a game that will guarantee a first time championship in the league.

The team in red plaid has been the Sisters of Perpetual Disarray finishing last in each of the previous Texas Rollergirls' four seasons, so this could be the ultimate last to first turnaround for them.  The Hotrod Honeys have played for the championship three out of the last four years finishing second each time.  So both teams are extremely hungry to carry off the top trophy for the very first time.

One of the main reasons for the Hell Mary's turnaround this season has been an infusion of veteran blood into this year's team.  All Stars Buckshot Betsy, Derringer, and 2006 MVP Sparkle Plenty came over from the tri-champion Honky Tonk Heartbreakers before this season started.  Those all stars in combination with the Hell Mary all stars of Bloody Mary and Muffin Tumble have become a very skilled team.

Add in rookie jammer and pivot Lady X, a national speed skating champion, and even the remaining veterans have improved this year to make the Hell Marys an extremely tough team.

The Hotrod Honeys started off known this year as a speed team led by Cat Tastrophe, Rice Rocket, and Lucille Brawl.  Dagger Deb has come over from the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers and helped bring a solid teamwork approach on defense, along with second year skater Miso Fresh who came over from the Hustlers.  Tinkerhell has had a monster season with almost too many jammer takeouts to count.

The Honeys have lost three key contributors due to injuries this year.  All star jammer Rollin' Sweet was lost in May to a dislocated kneecap.  Texecutioner alternate Rebellika, who was having a tremendous season as blocker and pivot, was lost three jams into the Hotrod's road game in Madison, Wisconsin.  Rookie blocker Morphine, a 4-foot 11-inch bulldog of a skater, is unlikely to skate this game because of a broken bone in her wrist-forearm area which occurred in a recent practice.

Before the injuries, most fans probably would have thought the Honeys should be favored.  But now it appears the Hell Marys may have an advantage as they skate a squad of 13 against only ten for the Hotrod Honeys.

However the four rookies (RadioActive, Shank, Vicious Van Gogo, and Cherry Crush) for the Honeys have done a tremendous job this year fitting into the new team defensive scheme.  The Honeys may have a psychological advantage because they were leading the Hell Marys at the June bout at halftime 27-24 when power was lost, and the bout was called a no-decision.  And the team in black and pink made a tremendous showing in Madison skating to within nine points of the WFTDA fourth-ranked Dairyland Dolls at the Dolls home rink.

All and all, the championship bout may boil down to a team of talented individuals who against a team that one league skater says, "Skates so well together."

In the consolation game, the third seeded Hustlers will take on the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers.  The last time the two teams met in July, the Hustlers took a 73-26 victory against an injury depleted defending champion squad.  Well this game should be a little different as there is a strong chance some key jammers may be returning to the Heartbreaker's lineup.

The Hustlers will feature jammers Dinah Mite, Barbarella, Pussy Velour, and one of the top scorers from last month Das-It.  Featured blockers include Curvette, Cheap Trixie, and if healed Slim Kickins.  The Honky Tonk Heartbreakers will have featured jammer Olivia Shootin' John, and possibly returning jammers Trouble and Mary Lou Threaten.  Featured blockers include Betty Rage, Sic Shooter, and Choctawesome.  And the Heartbreaker should have the return of Belle Starr for at least a portion of the game.

Doors open at Playland Skate Center, 8822 McCann in North Austin at 6:30 p.m.  The first game should start shortly after 7 o'clock.  Tickets are available in advance for $12, and $15 at the door.  For more information please visit the Texas Rollergirls web site at http://txrollergirls.com/.

So what does her book have to do with cracks in concrete causing
injuries? You watch somebody break a leg and that is derby drama.
You watch the reaction of a group of people realizing that somebody
who broke their leg because of cracks in concrete, that's also
drama. And that is also reality. The split that occured is also
reality. Life is full of drama, as it is in sports.

I consider Melicious' book as accurate, as I do with the Hell on
Wheels documentary. Life is not a smooth occurance, and neither is
roller derby or most other sports for that matter. My initial
concern expressed with Fremont Street was the surface of the street
and how safe it's been. I used to go to Vegas three times a year and
I'm just curious as to how they compensate for the surface on Fremont
Street. I imagine those issues have been addressed. But I don't
know that for sure.

I'd recommend Roller Derby by Catherine Mabe AKA Jayne Manslaughter
of Rocky Mountain Rollergirls. I've found it to be a quick read, more
amusing, and definitely drama-free.

Another great use for duct tape!

I believe the cracks in concrete at the Austin Music Hall may have
been one of the big causes of BGGW splitting about five years ago, as
Whiskey Lamour had a serious leg, upper ankle break in the Austin
Music Hall that may have been due to the concrete floor cracks. For
more information don't forget to read Melicious' book Rolergirl:
Totally True Tales from the Track, or go see Hell on Wheels in one of
its upcoming viewings in Tucson and Dallas.

Thanks for the info Zombie!

The Statisfyer and I duct taped what we could and I prayed for the
best while skating! My wheels did hit a giant crater (not enough
tape to fill it and cover it) on the first jam and I spun around a
few times and then fell. When I got up I was very surprised and
relieved that nothing was broken. I've really grown to appreciate
tracks w/ out holes, but cracks are easy enough to tape over if the
surrounding area is pretty flat and the gap is not too wide/deep.

I've reffed away where they had big cracks in the concrete floor. The
Statisfyer and I duct taped what we could and I prayed for the best while
skating! My wheels did hit a giant crater (not enough tape to fill it and cover
it) on the first jam and I spun around a few times and then fell. When I got
up I was very surprised and relieved that nothing was broken. I've really grown
to appreciate tracks w/ out holes, but cracks are easy enough to tape over if
the surrounding area is pretty flat and the gap is not too wide/deep.

And I know I barely skate indoors, and not in the last month because of
a hip pointer from skating at Playland, but does anyone ever worry
about the cracks and such in Fremont Street? It looks to me like
Flamingo Banks would be a lot safer than Fremont Street.

Now I assume if anyone is willing to skate in 110 degree heat at 7 p.m.
at night in Las Vegas, that cracks in the street or bricks is probably
no big deal. Maybe they have a portable track.

But could somebody please explain to me how this is pefectly safe in
comparison with Flamingo Banks, which while probably having abrasive
concrete, I didn't notice any particular cracks in the outdoor track
the last time I was there.

Just curious as I often am and would be happy to be informed as to the
relative safety of Fremont Street.

Bob IS the man - have no doubt.  His shirts would sell for double the money anywhere else, and they'd still be a bargain.

I'm sorry, this will be the only shameless plug I ever drop on this
board. Actually, I'm not quite as sorry after reading posts on square
dancing.

There a scads of you out there who have e-mailed me, yelled at me in
person, and I'm trying to quell all the hip-check threats left on my
answering machine every day. But, FLYIN' SQUIRREL is finally open. If
you've not seen these derby novelty shirts before,
www.flyinsquirrel. com will get you there. Take a gander, read the news -
big piece on Melbourne's league - and soak it in a little. Eventually,
the site will pull together significant aspects of derby culture,
including photography, artwork, and provide yellow pages of other derby-
run businesses.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming where Phil
reminisces about watching Dolly Parton as a teen on the Porter Wagoner
show.
