Sorry Gang, we won't be making it today. I spent all day in bed yesterday and continue to need to take it easy. Not to mention I don't really want to share, just in case. Much to my children's dissappointment as they love to go to archery class!
thanks, the hull crew

Hi everyone,

Starting this Monday, we are going to have archery lessons every week
at Gander Mountain. Feel free to attend as few or as many times as
your schedule permits ($10 per student), but please SIGN UP in the
database so we have some ideal of how many people will attend. I set
up the sign ups in the database for the next 3 weeks.

Also for people just interested in practicing at the archery range,
Gander Mountain has a 'membership' program where you can go there and
practice (when there aren't classes).

Hi everyone,

As stated above, our next archery class at Gander Mountain will be in
two weeks, and going forward I'm going to have the archery classes
every 2 weeks. There will be a sign up in the database as usual. This
week we mostly lined up, practiced our shooting, and received some
pointers from the instructors.

I am sorry we missed today. We really wanted to make it. Our house
has been a sick house for almost 2 weeks now. I was hoping that
everyone would feel up to it by today but not so. I hope our absence
didn't lend to a small turn out. We really want to continue with
archery and will be at the next lesson.

The funeral is right at the time of the archery lesson, so James and William (my husband) wont be able to make it tomorrow :(
I am sorry about this Scott, we had really hoped to make it because James enjoyed it so much!

We will make it to the next one, just let me know the time.

Hi everyone,

I set up the sign up for the next archery class in the database
section. The class will be on Monday January 28th at 11:00 AM. Sorry
for the delay in responding to everything. Things got busy.

Overall, I thought the first class went well. I doubt the Gander
mountain people would be willing to have us bring in someone else to
teach the class itself, but maybe the SCA longbow person could help
out or we could have them come in after the class and work with anyone
who wants to stay late. The Gander Mountain setup might not be ideal,
but I don't know of any alternative sites. Maybe the SCA guys can
give us a few ideas for alternative practice sites.

In regards to the instruction, should I request that the class be
split up by ages? Also, could they have used our practice time more
effectively? For example, would it be better if they had us line up,
and then provided individual instruction while the other students
watched? It seems like that would work well if they continue to let
us stay after class and practice in their facility.

-Scott

I know my son had a wonderful time there with his Dad, although he has
been informed that he is to allow the other kids to answer questions
next time! ;)
Would you believe that he thought he didn't want to go at first?!
We're not fussy about the lessons, and I believe both DS and DH would
love to learn about the longbow!

We really enjoyed the class you set up, Scott. My two are really into
it. Jacob already requested that we get there early enough next time to
buy more arrows. It was amazing that so many kids with weapons in an
ecnclosed space could avoid maiming each other!

We are up for more lessons. I'm assuming that as we go along, the
instruction will get more detailed.

Anyway, I've personally enjoyed telling people about taking archery.
Most of them are green with envy!

Thanks again for planning the class and we look forward to more.
Heather

Thanks Scott for setting the class for us. We had a blast. We didn't leave Gander Mountain until 2pm! My girls practiced outside yesterday for an hour. They broke two arrows in the process! See everyone in a few weeks!

Good Point, Becky! I completely agree!

I spoke with a friend of mine yesterday who is active in the SCA
(Society for Creative Anachronism) and she told me that there are
folks in the local SCA who (obviously) specialize in long bow archery
and who teach kids at events. She said they would probably love to
teach a class to home school kids, but just need a place to teach.
Perhaps we can bring the two together and see if one of the SCA
teachers would teach a class at Gander Mountain? That way it would be
someone who knows how to teach long bow specifically TO KIDS.

I will pursue this if anyone is interested.

Yes Scott, Thank you for organizing this group.  Eli really enjoyed himself and is ready for more.  The one thing I would like to see for future classes is more individualized time with the instructor.  Even if it is just 2 minutes here and there so that the kids aren't just shooting but being instructed at shooting correctly each time.

Thanks Again,

I just wanted to remind everyone that the archery class is on Monday
at 11:00 AM. If you signed up and need to back out, please contact me
either by email or phone 737-0814. I hope to see everyone there, and
remember to bring bows (and arrows) if you have them.

Gander Mountain is located near Virginia Center Commons at:
10150 Lakeridge Parkway
Ashland, VA 23005
Their phone number is 550-2414

Mapquest it and give yourself a few minutes to get there.

Thanks

Thanks so much for this reply - I don't mind at all having my boys supervised by other parents as long as the other parents don't mind.  I would also be glad to help watch out after other young siblings if that would be helpful to anyone else.  My 9-year-old is very responsible, even with a bow and arrow, but my 6-year-old will be very excited and I need to be sure someone is watching him.  He's obedient and wants to do the right thing but he is excitable at his age.  And this will be VERY exciting for us!
Thanks again for all you are doing to make this happen!

Pam,

I don't think it is a problem if you don't mind other parents in the group helping your sons out.  We are probably going to have between 10-20 people and 2 instructors.  My understanding is that they will only let 4-5 people into the range at a time with an instructor and other parents, so there should be very good supervision.

Thank you so much for setting this up.  Our family would like to participate - I have two older boys who would participate - Ben, age 9 and Daniel, age 6.  My only question is whether there is room for me to be with our toddler (I don't have daytime childcare for him) while my two older sons are where I can see/ supervise them, or is it the sort of thing where the kids will be supervised by one or more parent volunteers or the teacher?

We are committed to participating, but I just need to know how it will work for me bringing three kids, with only two of them old enough to participate in the archery.  If you need me to, I can drive out there in advance and check out the layout.

Hi everyone,

I finalized everything for our archery lesson at Gander Mountain.
This is a (big) new sporting goods store that has an indoor archery
range. Our first lesson will be on Monday, January 7th at 11:00 AM
and will last about 1 hour. We will get some instruction outside the
range and then range time to get practice in. If there are enough
people, they will split us into two groups (likely by age). The cost
is $10 per student for the lesson. We (our group) will need to
bring/buy our own bows/arrows and they will supply the targets. I
figure if some of us get bows, we can share with the group. I'll buy one.

They need to know how many people we will bring...just in case they
need to have a second instructor, so I need an RSVP for this. I would
prefer everyone signup/RSVP in the yahoogroups database, but you can
also email me at ssernaker@hotmail.com or call me at (804)737-0814. I
need to know how many kids you are bringing for the lesson and what
age they are. Also, if you sign up and can't make it, let me know.

Ultimately, I'd like to have a lesson there once or twice a month for
the group, but we can figure that stuff out when we meet. Their
normal rate is $25 per person, so we are getting a pretty good rate.
It seems like the instruction will be fairly individualized, so if we
have more than 10 people, they will probably have a second instructor.

Gander Mountain is located near Virginia Center Commons at:
10150 Lakeridge Parkway
Ashland, VA 23005

If you plan on going there to buy a bow, call ahead and make sure
Bobby (the instructor) will be there that day to help you with your
purchase. Wait until after Christmas though...they seemed to be out
of their midrange $$$ bows when I went there today. Their phone
number is: 804-550-2414.

Thanks

I signed up, but my Dh was talking about being the one to take DS there :)  I am not sure if he wants to participate in the lessons or not, SO, I am saying he doesn't, but will ask him :)

Hi Scott,
I added our family to the database. And I added myself as well. I hope
it's okay for the parents to participate? I'd love to learn...

Thanks again for setting this up,
Heather
