CINCINNATI -- Dusty Baker came to town with 1,162 victories on his
managerial resume. But Baker will have to wait a little longer for win
No. 1 as skipper of the Reds.

Thin hitting against Brandon Webb and a bumpy third inning for ace
Aaron Harang ensured a downer of an Opening Day outcome during a 4-2
Reds loss to the Diamondbacks before a sold-out crowd of 42,498 fans
at Great American Ball Park on Monday.

"You want to start off 1-0," Baker said of his first game in
Cincinnati. "It's always disappointing to lose. We'll get it together
[Wednesday]. We'll come back smoking."

The Reds managed just three hits in the game, none after Harang legged
out a leadoff infield single in the fifth inning. With his sinker and
changeup keeping everyone off balance, Webb (1-0) allowed two earned
runs and three hits over his six innings with four walks and six
strikeouts. Reds batters struck out 10 times overall.

"He did his job. Give it to him," said second baseman Brandon
Phillips, who went 1-for-4 with a triple that went as his team's only
extra-base hit. "He's their No. 1 starter for a reason. He showed us
today. We have to make sure we write down what he threw us this time,
and then when we face him again later this season, we have to [get] him."

It took one regular-season game before Baker had to take a player
aside for a mental mistake, and it happened following the Reds' first
hit of the game.

In the third inning, Javier Valentin led off with a long drive to
right field. Thinking the ball was headed over the fence, Valentin
started in a slow trot. The ball landed short and rattled off the
wall, and the Reds catcher was limited to a single instead of
potential extra bases.

"I thought it had a chance. Not today," said Valentin, who had another
long drive to the wall caught in the seventh.

The next batter in the third, Harang, did not get a sacrifice bunt
down and struck out while attempting to bunt. Valentin would end up
being stranded. His manager was left displeased.

"Whenever you play close games, especially against these guys, you
have to take advantage of almost every situation," Baker said. "Our
pitchers bunted a lot, but they didn't see live action much in Spring
Training. And I've addressed the other situation already."

According to Valentin, it was a big 10-4 following a chat with Baker.

"He's right. If I run right away, maybe I'd have a better opportunity
to get a double," Valentin said. "That's not going to happen anymore."

What's also likely to not happen often is Harang giving up two home
runs and two walks in one inning.

With one out in the top of the third, Chris Young lifted a 2-1 pitch
for a solo home run to left field. There were two outs when a
first-pitch fastball away trailed back in. Byrnes sent it into the
left-field seats for another Arizona homer and a 3-0 lead.

"Those two were the biggest pitches of the game. They cost me," Harang
said. "I was just missing in that inning off the plate -- my slider
and fastball both. Luckily, they were both solo ones."

Following Byrnes' homer, Harang immediately walked back-to-back
hitters but escaped without more damage. The Reds' ace retired the
next 10 batters in a row.

"His pitch count got kind of high in that one inning," Baker said. "He
found the center of the plate, which isn't typical Aaron. He lost his
release point very briefly and then got it back. The damage had been
done."

An unearned first-inning run accounted for the first scoring against
Harang. Third baseman Edwin Encarnacion made a nice pick on Orlando
Hudson's sharp ground ball but threw the ball high to first baseman
Scott Hatteberg for an error.

Two batters later, Conor Jackson rolled an RBI single up the middle
for a 1-0 Diamondbacks lead.

Coming off of a 59-minute rain delay at the game's start, the infield
grass was soggy. Even though Encarnacion has a history of ugly
throwing errors, Baker didn't deem this as one of them.

"That's not a fundamental error. That was a physical error," Baker
said. "At that time, the field was extremely wet. When that field is
wet, you hate for the ball to be hit to you."

A two-run bottom of the fourth against Webb got the Reds on the
scoreboard. Ken Griffey Jr. drew a leadoff walk and scored on
Phillips' RBI triple that got past Young in center field. Phillips
scored on Adam Dunn's groundout to second base.

"The only chance to score runs, we scored them," Dunn said. "When a
guy like [Webb] is on, he's as tough as there is. He made it very
tough. He's obviously one of the premier pitchers in the game. He
doesn't give you much to hit. He's very good.

I'm just as excited about Volquez and how he has looked this spring as I am with Cueto.  Edinson threw 93 pitches today, gave up only 2 hits, and didn't allow a single run.  You cannot ask for a better outing than that.  Could Belisle and Freel be on their way out the door in a deal soon?

Edinson Volquez and Matt Belisle were solid in extended spring games:

Volquez, 7.2ip, 2h, 0r, 0bb, 13k, 93 pitches
Belisle, 6ip, 4h, 1er, 0bb, 2k, 63 pitches

D-Backs 4, Reds 2

The Diamondbacks beat the Reds 4-2.

An unearned run and a late run given up by Jared Burton was difference.

Aaron Harang went six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits. He walked two and struck out six. Except for five batter stint in the third he was good. He retired the last 10 he faced.

Play-by-play:

D-Backs 1st: Orlando Hudson reached on Edwin Encarnacion's throwing error, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Conor Jackson's single.

Reds first: 1-2-3. Brandon Webb struck out Jeff Keppinger and Junior Griffey.

D-Backs 2nd: Perfect inning for Harang, two Ks.

Reds 2nd: They got a runner on via Edwin Encarnacion's two-out walk. But Webb looks sharp.

D-Backs 3rd: Harang struck out Webb, gave up a home run to left to Chris Young, got Hudson to fly out, then gave up a bomb to left-center to Eric Byrnes. Harang walked the next two hitters. But he struck out Mark Reynolds to escape further damage.

Reds 3rd: Javy Valentin hit one to the base of the wall in right to lead off. With Valentin's speed and the short wall it, was long single. Harang struck out trying bunt him over. Corey Patterson flied to short center and Keppinger grounded out.

D-Backs 4th: 1-2-3, quick inning for Harang.

Reds 4th: Griffey walked to start the inning. Brandon Phillips hit a shot to right-center. Young came in to try to cut it off. It got by him and to the wall. Griffey scored easily and Phillips ended up at third with a triple. Adam Dunn’s groundout got Phillips in.

D-Backs 5th: 1-2-3.

Reds 5th: Leadoff single by Harang. Great play by Hudson, great hustle by Harang. DP from Keppinger ended it.

D-Backs 6th: 1-2-3.

Reds 6th: Two-out walk from Dunn.

D-Backs 7th: Jared Burton pitching. He got two quick outs. Then Jeff Salazar turned on a pitch. It stayed just inside the foul pole in the right. Arizona 4, Reds 2.

Reds 7th: Norris Hopper was hit by a pitch with two outs.

D-Backs 8th: 1-2-3 inning for David Weathers.

Reds 8th: 1-2-3, thanks to a nice play by Hudson on Griffey's grounder.

D-Backs 9th: Francisco Cordero gave up a hit on the firdst pitch, then retired the side in order.

There was a 59-minute delay at the start. It was the first rain delay on Opening Day since 2000. The Reds had a three-hour delay that day. The game with the Brewers was declared a 3-3 tie. It was first delay at start since a 17-minute delay in 1991.

I hope it’s a bit warmer than it looked today.  Opening Day can either be great or if the weather is rainy and stormy, quite miserable day to watch baseball.  You're either going to have a nice day or freeze your asteroid off.

MLB Trade Rumors

Latest On Rios Negotiations

Posted: 31 Mar 2008 12:27 PM CDT

12:24pm: J.P. Ricciardi is optimistic the Rios extension will get done, and the two sides are pushing their deadline back a few days.

8:17am: According to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, the holdup in the Alex Rios negotiations is the amount of money for the option year.  It might be the salary or the buyout amount.  Sounds like a minor stumbling block before completing the six-year, $65MM pact.

J.P. Ricciardi is cautiously optimistic; the Jays kick off their season in less than four hours.  That is supposedly the deadline, but stretching it another day or two doesn't seem like a big deal.  The Jays are getting a solid price relative to other recently signed right fielders.

No Multiyear Deal For Aaron Hill

Posted: 31 Mar 2008 11:48 AM CDT

From Buster Olney's blog this morning:

The Blue Jays attempted to sign second baseman Aaron Hill to a multiyear deal but could not reach an agreement.

Hill, 26, broke out last year with a .291/.333/.459 line.  He could be even better this season, with a shot at 20 home runs.  His defense is among the best in the game at second base.

Hill will reach arbitration for the first time after this season.  Orlando Hudson might be a solid comparable.  Hudson made $2.3MM, $3.9MM, and $6.25MM in his arbitration years.

Odds and Ends: Cashman, Matsuo, Durham

Posted: 31 Mar 2008 09:54 AM CDT

Some random links to ponder today...

  • Peter Abraham submitted nine reader questions to Yankees GM Brian Cashman.  I liked reading about how Cashman deals with agents who lie to him.
  • The Red Sox signed free agent Terumasa Matsuo, who was pitching in a Japanese independent league.  I have no idea what the 26 year-old pitcher is capable of.
  • Tracy Ringolsby says the Giants really want to move Ray Durham and Dave Roberts, and will pick up some salary to do so.  Durham makes $7.5MM in '08.  Roberts gets $6.5MM in each of the '08 and '09 seasons.

Three July Trade Predictions

Posted: 31 Mar 2008 08:59 AM CDT

I'm in a prognosticating mood; here are three July trade deadline predictions.

  • Phillies acquire Joe Blanton for Carlos Carrasco and Adrian Cardenas.  Pat Gillick's last hurrah.
  • Padres acquire Jason Bay for Kevin Kouzmanoff and Wade LeBlanc.  Bay returns to San Diego to provide some power and solve the left field issue.  Chase Headley takes over at third for the Padres.
  • Rays acquire Javier Vazquez for Wade Davis and Desmond Jennings.  Just a fun prediction to ponder.  In this scenario the Sox opt for a complete rebuild and the Rays make a somewhat surprising playoff push.
  • Your turn.  Why are my proposals ridiculous?  What reasonable July trade scenarios can you concoct?

Blocked Prospects: Brent Lillibridge

Posted: 30 Mar 2008 10:04 PM CDT

One of the key components of the Adam LaRoche to Pittsburgh deal in early 2007 was shortstop Brent Lillibridge, who came over to the Braves along with Mike Gonzalez. Lillibridge, who had a decent shot of making the Braves as a utility player this spring, was one of the team's final cuts and will start the year in Richmond.

Lillibridge's instincts have always drawn raves and he's matured quickly. Many would argue he's Major League ready now. But for the foreseeable future he's blocked by Yunel Escobar, himself a newly appointed starter. Lillibridge managed a .400 OBP during two Class-A stops in 2006. In 2007 he hit 10 homers in 87 games at Triple-A Richmond and projects as a 15-20 HR guy in the bigs. He's got good, but not blazing speed. Yet in 309 minor league games he's swiped 105 bases, including 28 with an 85% success rate in Richmond. It's the instincts, man.

However, with Escobar's fantastic close to the 2007 season there was little doubt who the Braves starting shortstop would be going into 2008. Lillibridge had a shot to make the team as a utility player, and in early March was even given a surprise start at third by manager Bobby Cox despite not having played the position since the 2004 Cape Cod summer league. "He can play, man," said Cox after the game when questioned about the move. Lillibridge also saw time at second and in center (where he spent two seasons in college) during the spring.

The reason he didn't head north with the team this year was partly because he hit just .224 this spring (and led the team with 18 whiffs), but also because the team would like to get him regular at bats, something that wouldn't happen if he'd made the team as a bench player. At the very least a late season callup seems in order, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that he'd get some starts in center should Mark Kotsay's back flare up.

You get the feeling Cox would like to find a place for Lillibridge. His name often surfaces in trade talks, but that probably has more to do with other GMs coveting him than any willingness to deal on the part of the Braves. Still, it's fun to think about what an "intangibles" kind of player like Lillibridge might fetch. He could end up being a key piece to the Braves getting a top player for the stretch run.

Rangers DFA Tejeda, Cruz

Posted: 30 Mar 2008 08:10 PM CDT

As expected the Rangers DFA'd outfielder Nelson Cruz and pitcher Robinson Tejeda over the weekend. Tejeda is a casualty of the Rangers' Friday deal for Dustin Nippert, and has been undergoing a thus far unsuccessful transition to the bullpen. He went 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA during the spring, but did manage to run a streak of four scoreless appearances prior to giving up a game-ending RBI triple to Felix Pie last week.

Cruz's release was expected. There was some light talk of him possibly being moved to Tampa last week, but that evaporated when the Rays acquired former Angels prospect Nathan Haynes. Ironically, according to Lone Star Ball, Haynes was once offered to Texas along with Casey Kotchman in a proposed deal for Mark Teixeira. Sands through the hourglass...

Control problems have always plagued Tejeda (67/60 K/BB in 2007), but he's got a live fastball that touches the upper 90s and a decent change to compliment it. Plus he owns Orlando Cabrera (1 for 10 lifetime). It seems likely someone might give the 6' 3" Dominican another shot.

Aaron Shinsano writes for East Windup Chronicle.

Odds And Ends: Quintero, Rios, Pierre

Posted: 30 Mar 2008 05:06 PM CDT

A few random notes from around the MLBiverse...

  • Henry Schulman says the Giants are in need of a backup catcher and a logical choice may be Astros backup Humberto Quintero, whom Bruce Bochy is familiar with from his days with the Padres. He also notes that the Rays have two experienced catchers that were just reassigned to the minor leagues in Josh Paul and Mike DiFelice.
  • The Jays and Alex Rios are closer today to an agreement on a long-term extension than they were yesterday. That according to Rios' agent, Paul Kinzer. Yesterday it was reported that the Jays had offered a six-year, $65MM deal. No word yet on what any new offers might look like. Kinzer reasserted that a deal needs to be done by tonight or negotiations will be put off until after the season.
  • Bobby Kielty initially accepted his demotion to Pawtucket, but he is now having second-thoughts and will wait a few days to see if any other teams are interested in a switch-hitting outfielder. With all the rumors swirling recently about teams in need of outfield help, I have to believe that Kielty will land a major league gig. PECOTA projects a line of .253/.331/.418 based on 159 plate appearances and Kielty can play all three outfield spots.
  • The Dodgers made it official today, giving Andre Ethier the left field job.   This puts one more nail in the coffin of one of the worst free agent signings in recent memory. The move means that Juan Pierre will be a reserve, one year after signing a five-year, $44MM deal. The Dodgers will certainly look to trade Pierre, but will have to swallow a good portion of the $36.5MM remaining on the deal.
  • A couple of big names have made major league rosters after only earning non-roster spring training invites prior to spring training. The Rockies have given a job to Scott Podsednik, while the Rays did the same with former Rookie-of-the-Year Eric Hinske. In fact, Hinske will start on Opening Day and will be the Rays' right fielder against right handers to begin the season.
  • Phil Sheriden notes that Adam Eaton was named the Phillies' fifth starter, but that may not last long as Pat Gillick will certainly be looking for a better option. Sheriden feels that Gillick is much better at making moves in-season than during the offseason.

Cork Gaines writes for Rays Index and can be reached here.

Well there has been some rumors floating around today but nothing has happened so far.  The deadline for submitting opening day rosters has passed without a deal being announced.  I still think something is in the works.  There is just to many rumors floating around this morning without something being worked on.  Can they get something done for a catcher?  For who?  Who goes?  All questions inquiring Reds Fans want the answers too.  Spread the word about the group to your friends who are baseball fans.  Now that the season is here lets step up participation in the discussions.

Wes Helms to be released by Phils?

Still no word on a Wes Helms trade. If that doesn't happen, he'll likely be released if and when Brad Lidge comes off the Phillies D.L. next weekend. -- Delco Times

Phils consider Stanton and Kline?

The deadline to submit opening day rosters passed without the Phillies making a last-minute move. General manager Pat Gillick said the club had been mulling a few possible additions, but he didn't elaborate. Veteran relievers Mike Stanton and Steve Kline became available over the weekend. The Reds bought out Stanton's $3.5 million contract, while the Giants designated Kline for assignment, giving them 10 days to trade or release him. -- Wilmington News Journal

Reds first baseman Scott Hatteberg is drawing more trade interest than utility man Ryan Freel, but to what end? Hatteberg, 38, could beat out rookie Joey Votto, 24, for the Reds' first-base job. Hatteberg batted .386 this spring, Votto only .206. Even if manager Dusty Baker goes with Votto — unlikely at this point — the team almost certainly will keep Hatteberg as protection.

Any surprises?????

SARASOTA, Fla. -- For the second straight day, the Reds made a trio of
reassignments. Prior to Saturday's final Spring Training game, Jim
Brower, Jolbert Cabrera and Jerry Hairston Jr. were reassigned to
Minor League camp. The move puts Cincinnati's healthy roster at 28,
with three cuts remaining to be made before Monday's Opening Day.

Brower, a right-handed reliever, was competing for the final spot in
the Reds' bullpen. The 35-year-old was signed to a Minor League
contract in December 2007, and compiled a 9.82 ERA in 7 1/3 innings
pitched.

Cabrera was signed to a Minor League contract by the Reds on March 3,
and batted .296 with 14 RBIs this spring. A versatile player with
Major League experience, Cabrera was vying for a position in the Reds'
outfield.

Hairston was also signed to a Minor League contract on March 3. The
30-year-old has played 10 seasons in the Majors with the Orioles, Cubs
and Rangers and batted .296 with six RBIs in this year's camp.

The Reds must reduce their roster to 25 before Monday's home opener
vs. Arizona.

With Mike Stanton already told that he will not be on the team and
catcher David Ross expected to start the season on the disabled list,
the Reds will likely release one more pitcher before the season's start.

I actually went a step further this year and spent the extra money to get the high definition package added on.  Very costly but if you cannot get to a home game it’s the best you can do.

yes, both cable & DirecTv will have opening day. It's
part of the package when you buy it. I have to work,
so will miss all the games but then the following day,
all the games should be in the evening, so all of us
can enjoy them. I have my cable package of Extra Innings
& I'm SO ready.

Don't forget, the Braves open tonight on ESPN in the Nationals
new ballpark. If you can, check out the game, Hey, it's
opening night! Should be a good game......
