Reds head to St. Louis hoping to end slide

The Cincinnati Reds are expected to have one of their aces back in the rotation tonight in the opener of a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Edinson Volquez is expected to be activated off the disabled list in time to make Monday's start, his ninth of the 2009 season. Volquez left his last outing on May 16 at San Diego with back spasms and landed on the DL a few days later. He did not factor in the outcome of a 6-5 loss to the Padres and was reached for two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Volquez, who underwent extensive rehab, is 2-0 over his last four outings and 4-2 with a 4.25 earned run average overall this season, while holding opposing hitters to a paltry .185 batting average. He faced the Cardinals in an 8-7 home loss on May 10 and recorded a no-decision despite surrendering a season- high seven runs in 6 2/3 innings of work. The righty, who won 17 games a year ago, is 1-1 with a 4.79 ERA in three career starts against St. Louis.

Cincinnati hopes Volquez can put a wrench in its current losing streak after the team suffered a three-game sweep in Milwaukee over the weekend. The Reds entered the series riding a season-high four-game winning streak, then lost Friday's series opener by a 3-2 score and dropped a 9-5 decision the next day. In Sunday's 5-2 setback in the series finale, Reds starter Micah Owings was roughed up for five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings for the loss.

Brandon Phillips went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the setback, Cincinnati's sixth in a row as the visitor.

"We had chances to win the game today. We had chances to win the game the day before. We just didn't come through," Phillips said. "Good teams do little things to win. We have to do the small things. Get (runners) over and get them in. (The Brewers) executed. That's why they're in first place."

The Reds are 3 1/2 games behind Milwaukee for the top spot in the National League Central standings. St. Louis is just a game off the lead, but has dropped four of its last seven games and lost two of three contests in San Francisco over the weekend.

St. Louis was beaten, 5-3, in Sunday's series finale. Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright was touched for four runs on 10 hits in seven innings to absorb the loss for the Cardinals, who got a two-run double from Nick Stavinoha and three hits apiece out of Albert Pujols and Brendan Ryan.

"(The Giants) had a couple of key hits and we missed a couple of chances," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "They did some things and it went their way."

The Cardinals are 17-9 at home this season and will also host Colorado for four games on this residency. Taking the ball for tonight's opener of the homestand will be Todd Wellemeyer, who has won two straight and four of his last six trips to the mound. Wellemeyer previously took the hill on Wednesday in a 3-2 win at Milwaukee and hurled 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball for the victory.

Wellemeyer improved to 5-4 with a 5.02 earned run average over 10 starts this season. The right-hander is just 2-3 in six home starts this season and 2-3 with a 4.54 in 18 career meetings (4 starts) against Cincinnati.

The Reds won two of three games versus St. Louis at Great American Ball Park from May 8-10 this season, but the Cardinals went 10-5 in the series a year ago. Cincinnati went 1-5 at Busch Stadium last season and is 3-13 over the past 16 matchups as the visitor in the series.

I can understand that but its going to be even worse starting tomorrow with a guy named Pujols. Maybe for the series we should start Rhodes, Weathers, and Herrera and bring the starters in for relief. j/k  I have a very bad feeling about this series in St. Louis and I'm hoping the Reds prove me wrong.

Reds mum on Votto's trip to DL
The Enquirer - 5/30/2009
The Reds put first baseman Joey Votto on the 15-day disabled list with stress-related issues. At Votto's request, team officials wouldn't discuss the nature of Votto's problem much beyond what was in the two-line press release. More

Hernandez won't be such a bad fill in but the Reds are going to miss Joey's offense regardless to who fills in while he is gone.  Sounds like this quite possibly could continue for awhile.  It just may force the Reds to make a deal with someone out of necessity.  If they are going to stay in contention they are going to have to score runs.  So far this series they're wasting ops to make Milwaukee and St. Louis nervous.

Yeah but what we've all been saying several times, Homey is out of options after this year and the Reds are going to be forced to decide what to do with him whether they are out of patience with him or not.  Father time has run out on Homey in the Reds Organization.

On a side note though its cold here in Milwaukee this morning.  I'm still shocked that Harang wasted such a strong start from the Reds yesterday with multiple homers in the first and lost the game.  We're going to the game today as well so hopefully the results are going to be much different.  Reds are wasting opportunites to push further for the top of our division.

I know all about stress related dizziness or anxiety as I've had severe panic attacks since 1997 after a car wreck. The sad thing is that I still have them and I never know when they're going to occur so if this is the case with Votto this could be a real problem in being able to keep him in the lineup on a consistent basis. There are times I have a spell maybe once a month and other times I can have them several times a week.. The medication I take for them would also interfere with his time playing.

Castillo is not here to replace Joey, he is here to provide insurance to cover our catching position. Hernandez and Hanigan are going to both be playing the next couple of weeks a lot of baseball and to me that is the best way to go. Now about Joey, did you notice that the release said stress-related issues. It now is coming out that perhaps this is an anxiety disorder thing, the bottom line to me is that they aren't sure what is going on yet so with Joey's and the club's best interest in mind, especially Joey's they are going to DL him. Now, they can really check him out without the stress of playing, remember his Dad died last year so there are all kinds of things going on here in this special young man's life. Speaking from experience, not knowing what is wrong can really play mind games with you and affect your health too.

Castillo in his second stint with the Reds this season...he was on the roster Sunday and Monday but did not play in either game.

I wonder if he is Bi-Polar?  Hernandez can fill in at first and Hannigan can be the catcher while he is out yet.  Hernandez came in for him yesterday.  This is getting quite interesting.  I wish Joey a speed recovery and a quick return.  Reds will miss him while he's gone.

I don't know if I agree with that about Sabo as I liked Pendleton and Boone at 3B. I also believe that Lenny Harris played 3B after Sabo too.

But we definitely haven't had a reliable 3B for the past 3-4 years.

Bruce has shown signs of life recently and has raised his average up to .241 the last I checked.  1st isn't the problem.  Reds haven't had a reliable option at third since Chris Sabo last held it down in the early 90's.

There's been a few trades made recently so this may be a good time for the Reds to try and get a power hitter. He doesn't necessarily have to play 1B as Reds seem to have some solid fill ins there. We would be ok if Bruce would start producing like he should.

As some of you already know railroads are my main hobby, I have ridden Amtrak frequently. Madden actually rode Amtrak till they got him the Madden Cruiser, Outback helped sponsor that land yacht by the way. Amtrak's setup between Milwaukee and St. Louis is not bad and I sure wouldn't fly Joey there right now.

I agree Virg my grandfather had this problem and it eventually became a permanent thing that he would have the problem several times a month. The doctors, I believe, started calling it a different problem but it had initially been called an inner ear infection but the infection caused permanent damage which caused the dizziness.

I was afraid of this, I made a joke about it on some sites saying that
we need to get the Madden Crusier for Joey as each game after flying
the inner ear thing flairs up. It really isn't funny and Joey doesn't
even want to talk about it because of how upsetting it is to him.
Let's all hope and pray for the best for Votto.

If Joey goes on the DL and everything points in that direction, the Reds are going to need someone to step up and at least moderately fill the void that it will create with Joey gone in run production.  This is a bad break for a surging Reds team.

Herrera a quiet success
The Enquirer - 5/29/2009
Daniel Ray Herrera, once an uncertainty to make the club out of spring training, has been a major boost to a Reds bullpen that boasts a 3.65 ERA and is allowing opponents to hit just .243. More
