Just getting that bat or two could make the difference.  Its not as important to go out and get a 5th starter when we may indeed have it already on the bench or on the farm.  Getting that couple of bats and perhaps shoring up the catcher and 3 bagger spot seems more necessary.  Our pitching should be fine if we resign our own.

well...as for the reds and FA this off-season...i think i agree with
mj...they actually could be ready to do something this time, with the
dumping of salary they've done...if weathers leaves or signs for
relatively little, and affeldt the same...the team could well find
itself able to compete in some FA cases...

me...i think the pitching right now just might be fine, especially with
the long list of starters or potential starters they have...so for the
first time in over a decade, i kind of like the idea of finding that
rightie hitter they need so badly...

and all the talk of maybe trading bailey, etc., kind of makes me think
there's a chance the reds could find themselves in good shape on both
fronts...more pitching and the hitter...

i still believe, with jocketty's past in view, that trades may well be
the big thing in the end...he's known to trade solid players for solid
players, just to shake things up...something the reds desperately
need...my list of very possible departures include e.e., keppinger,
dickerson, freel, valentin, and a long list of the guys not on the 25-
man roster...toss in some of the pitching too...

this may well make use of the FA market, but i'm so sure that we'll see
maybe half a dozen new faces here next year that i'd about bet the
house on it...

so everybody get ready...like everyone i love to speck, but
really...with jocketty, and with castellini's obvious frustration now,
i don't think we can count anything out...

hey...remember mickey lolich...big and rolly-polly, he was actually a
far more effective and longer-lasting starter for the tigers than
denny mclain...i don't know about wells, except that he's got the
attitude you need...lol...i don't think he'd work out, but just for
fun i'll say this...give me wells before any of those sore-armed
guys...whatever other problems the guy might have, he's always had a
solid arm...

Subject: [Reds-Fest] Re: Fay's Assignment

i think the reds need two outfielders and a solid third baseman...

so first...the question is...can e.e. take the steps to get his
fielding under control consistently, and can he at least limit his
downtime...slumpwise...at the plate...i think he can, but still, if
he doesn't, it is a problem...

the outfield...we've got bruce, and i think it's a lock that he'll be
solid and hopefully show improvement over the next two or three
seasons, finally developing into the guy we all know he can be out
there...so that leaves two spots...

my spec has been centered on some hope for getting holliday...that
may well be out of the question...the reds have dickerson, and he
showed some real ability, so i think it's safe to say they'll give
him every chance to be a starter here...if he continues to hit
consistently, that would go a long way toward filling the need for a
hitter in the one or two hole at the top of the order...

as for who we might get...i won't bother to spec on names, but i
think it's obvious that a solid righthanded bat is essential to give
the lineup some consistency...so if they go after an outfielder, i'd
think that would be one big consideration...surely there will be
several available if the reds have the right pieces to trade to a
specific team's need...

all that said, i'm going to add...catching...hanigan showed well, and
i kind of expect him to make the most of it and set himself for a
nice 6 or 7 year career here...still, a solid catcher to share the
duties with is essential...bako is gone, valentin isn't what i'd want
for that, and so i think getting somebody like laird from texas may
well be on the wish list already...

pitching...the reds are deep but could still use some help...i'm
looking for adjustments based mostly on whether they keep affeldt and
weathers, though even with that they might like to have another
rightie in the pen...

as to how they get any or all of this, i'm thinking mostly
trade...the free agent thing might yield the right guy for the right
need at the right price, but that's always an iffy thing, especially
for a relatively low-budget team like the reds...so specking on the
bucks here seems a little premature, at best...

last...depending on gonzo's return...or not...the bench may well use
a hitter or two now...i like the ability the team already has to put
defense on the field with keppinger, hairston, and so on able to play
all over...freel may well be back, though if he shows well in the
spring, he might also be a part of some deal...

we'll see...

Makes perfect sense if they do.  I like that they think that the Reds who normally aren't big players in FA might be sleepers in 09 FA.

I don't mind gambling on Mulder for the right amount of money.

But, personally, I'd rather see them try and do something like was suggested in SI: sign Derek Lowe. A ground ball pitcher in our park would be awesome. Not to meantion he's thrown 200+ innings 3 of the last 4 years (and missed the one year by 2/3's of an inning). And I realize some of those ideas are out there, but I can dream. Sign him for 2 years (3 at the most) to give the youngsters more time.

i think the reds need two outfielders and a solid third baseman...

so first...the question is...can e.e. take the steps to get his
fielding under control consistently, and can he at least limit his
downtime...slumpwise...at the plate...i think he can, but still, if
he doesn't, it is a problem...

the outfield...we've got bruce, and i think it's a lock that he'll be
solid and hopefully show improvement over the next two or three
seasons, finally developing into the guy we all know he can be out
there...so that leaves two spots...

my spec has been centered on some hope for getting holliday...that
may well be out of the question...the reds have dickerson, and he
showed some real ability, so i think it's safe to say they'll give
him every chance to be a starter here...if he continues to hit
consistently, that would go a long way toward filling the need for a
hitter in the one or two hole at the top of the order...

as for who we might get...i won't bother to spec on names, but i
think it's obvious that a solid righthanded bat is essential to give
the lineup some consistency...so if they go after an outfielder, i'd
think that would be one big consideration...surely there will be
several available if the reds have the right pieces to trade to a
specific team's need...

all that said, i'm going to add...catching...hanigan showed well, and
i kind of expect him to make the most of it and set himself for a
nice 6 or 7 year career here...still, a solid catcher to share the
duties with is essential...bako is gone, valentin isn't what i'd want
for that, and so i think getting somebody like laird from texas may
well be on the wish list already...

pitching...the reds are deep but could still use some help...i'm
looking for adjustments based mostly on whether they keep affeldt and
weathers, though even with that they might like to have another
rightie in the pen...

as to how they get any or all of this, i'm thinking mostly
trade...the free agent thing might yield the right guy for the right
need at the right price, but that's always an iffy thing, especially
for a relatively low-budget team like the reds...so specking on the
bucks here seems a little premature, at best...

last...depending on gonzo's return...or not...the bench may well use
a hitter or two now...i like the ability the team already has to put
defense on the field with keppinger, hairston, and so on able to play
all over...freel may well be back, though if he shows well in the
spring, he might also be a part of some deal...

we'll see...

Please, no more sore armed reclamation projects. Didn't we have one of those last year who pitched well up through the end of July (3.29 era, 45K, 14BB, 52 IP), then tired badly in August. I am speaking of Mike Lincoln and most of the discussion on this blog has been to dump him. Why would anyone expect Mulder to do any better?

If you want a cheap lefty starter, I bet David Wells is available :-)

Got a press release today:

Cincinnati Reds veteran Brandon Phillips won the 2008 Fielding Bible Award for second base in an announcement made November 1, 2008, in The Bill James Handbook 2009. This is Phillips' first Fielding Bible Award.

Phillips was chosen by a panel of ten experts, including Bill James and John Dewan, author of the award-winning book The Fielding Bible, which revolutionized fielding analysis in the major leagues, and the forthcoming The Fielding Bible—Volume II.

In granting the award to Phillips, Dewan wrote: “Brandon Phillips finished third in our voting last year and now has won his first Fielding Bible Award with 86 points. The panelists who watched Phillips play have seen what he can do on the field and rewarded him accordingly.”

Officially announced annually on November 1 (before any other fielding awards), The Fielding Bible Awards name the best overall fielder at every position in the major leagues each season. This year, National League players were chosen at five positions and American League players at four. 2008 marks the third year of the Fielding Bible Awards.

The other 2008 Fielding Bible Award winners are:
First Base—Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals
Third Base—Adrian Beltre, Seattle Mariners
Shortstop—Jimmy Rollins, Philadelphia Phillies
Left Field—Carl Crawford, Tampa Bay Rays
Center Field—Carlos Beltran, New York Mets
Right Field—Franklin Gutierrez, Cleveland Indians
Catcher—Yadier Molina, St. Louis Cardinals
Pitcher—Kenny Rogers, Detroit Tigers

Reds explore options with their free agents

Reds notebook

By John Fay • jfay@... • October 30, 2008

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty has kept the lines of communication open with most of the nine free agents that ended the season on the Reds roster.

The club has talked with the agents for right-handers David Weathers and Mike Lincoln, left-hander Jeremy Affeldt, outfielder/infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. and catcher Javier Valentin.

The Reds are unlikely to bring back all five players.

"We're piecing things together," Jocketty said. "Nothing is imminent. We're seeing what their expectations are."

In other Reds developments:

The Reds will at least explore signing left-hander Mark Mulder, whose option was turned down by the Cardinals last week.

"I've got to see what the medical situation is," Jocketty said. "I traded for him and re-signed him. I obviously liked him."

Mulder has been limited to 122/3 innings over the last two years by shoulder problems. He was 97-50 with a 3.87 ERA before his shoulder problems began three years ago.

Jocketty said the Reds "haven't discussed" pursuing Ken Griffey Jr., whose option was reportedly turned down by the Chicago White Sox.

The Reds, according to terms of the trade that sent Griffey to the White Sox, are responsible for half of the $4 million buyout of the option.

Griffey begins collecting the $57.5 million in deferred money from his Reds contract in 2009. The Reds fully funded the deferred money before the trade.

Thought I read somewhere that supposedly he could have signed with the Mets for more but chose the Reds instead.

I was on the Bring Up Bailey as much as anyone but now feel moving him to acquire a couple much needed pieces of the puzzle could indeed be in the best interest of the club as well as Bailey's.  He needs to develop a much more effective off speed pitch or he's just going to end up a one pitch wonder who quickly fizzles out as a professional.  A corner outfielder who can hit in the clutch with marginal power and a third basemen who can play defense with the same specs (Defense, average power, hits in the clutch) would go a long way in restoring the glory of a once proud franchise whose fallen on hard times for most of the last decade since its last post season appearance.  Mostly due to mismanagement of the club but it takes time to fix those mistakes.  The farm is starting to produce.  Soon we're going to have some nice sweet corn to munch on I hope.

yeah...jocketty has yet to really do much, at least openly...what
we've seen up til now really goes back to dan o'brien, and i think
it's fair to give hime a fair slice of credit for what's coming along
already...of course, krivsky made a lot of moves, and i think he did
a really good job overall, even if not everything came up big...i
know the bray/majewski thing is still there, but really when you look
at how the guys we lost have done since, i still have to say the reds
are ahead...

and jocketty has something to work with, too...the speck on bailey
going for something new and better seems like a good opinion...still,
i'm a firm believer that having 7 to 8 good starters on the 40-man
roster is needed if a team is going to go through a whole season and
be at or near the top...

who knows how w.j. will do...but one thing is sure...he doesn't own
any leather britches...

Not many said Pete did a bad job.  The Ownership clearly wanted a "NAME" manager to run the team and spent money to get one.  Dusty was if not the best available you'd have to concede at least that he was one of the best available at the time in the Reds price range.  Whether or not ya'll like him or not is irrelevant when you take into account given the amount of time he's been on the job.  It takes time to turn around a team whose had 8 straight losing seasons.  It doesn't always happen as quickly as one would prefer.  IMHO they're close to doing that and just need that one or two guys to push them over the top.  IMHO Dunn nor Junior was going to be able to accomplish that monumental task and therefore was impeding the ability of the team to restructure itself and move on due to their large salaries.  There is a transition going on with them as they go from a power hitting team that strikes out allot to more of a small ball team.  Yes same result this year but get back to me next year as the transition completes itself, Jocketty has a chance to make a few of his own moves, and we'll see if ya'll get a much different result next year this time around.

wow virg...should have read your take before ticking out my own and
just said 'ditto'!!!

your right about the relative situations...and when i look back at
jocketty's 'transformations' in st. louis and before, i have to say
that he made some good deals, as they worked out...but remember, many
of them didn't seem so hot when he did them...point is, i think we
might have some gulping time coming...

as for baker, well, i don't know...what i saw this past year was a
team that should have done somewhat better than it did, and if flat
out didn't...i remember all the hammering jerry narron took, but it
would be nice if someone explained to me how baker's results were
really so different...and how pete m. could have been any worse,
considering how well he got things going those couple of months he
ran it in the interim...

whatever...sometimes i just don't get the 'magic' thing so many
people in and out of baseball are looking for...right now the only
two managers i'd really bet on are torre and larussa because of what
they've done in all kinds of situations over an extended
time...pinella has had two or three really good years, but his record
is still, overall, finishing third...maybe this guy joe madden down
in tampa might have the touch, who knows...

all i'm saying is...there're still a lot of things to get settled
here in cincy, and everybody knows that it takes more than just
having 25 all-stars...check out the yankees over the years...

one thing else...this past season, i got pretty cranky about it all,
especially after krivsky got dumped...i'm patient, like so many reds'
fans, and i'll be around as long as my share of air gets to me before
i suffocate...but the club is even better stocked right now than it
has been in years, and it's time for somebody's magic to at least
tickle us a little...

Thought I read somewhere that supposedly he could have signed with the Mets for more but chose the Reds instead.

He got a hunk of money and is in favor with management.  He's not getting paid Miley or Narron type money so he's not going anywhere for awhile at least.

MLB Trade Rumors

Royals Close To Jacobs Deal

Posted: 29 Oct 2008 09:35 PM PDT

10:38pm: Joe Frisaro of MLB.com says the deal would be Jacobs for Nunez, and it could be announced this week.  Nunez, 25, posted a 2.98 ERA in 48.1 innings.  His strikeout rate was weak, but he managed to keep the ball in the yard despite flyball tendencies.  He threw quite hard, averaging 94.4 mph on his heater.  He missed some time with a strained lat.

8:31pm: Dutton says this evening that the Royals are moving closer to a deal for Jacobs.  The Marlins apparently rejected a trade for Rosa, and current discussions involve a ready-now reliever.  Dutton believes it could be Leo Nunez or Ramon Ramirez.

9:02am: According to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star, first baseman Mike Jacobs remains a possible acquisition for the Royals.  Jacobs, 28, hit .247/.299/.514 in 519 plate appearances this year.  He struggled mightily against lefties this year and in '06, but handled them in '07.  Trade talks with the Marlins stalled over the health of pitching prospect Carlos Rosa.  The Mariners, Blue Jays, and Giants are also in on Jacobs.

It's surprising to see the Royals apparently willing to give up a prospect for a first baseman - they have a couple of palatable (and cheaper) options in Kila Ka'aihue and Ryan Shealy.  Ka'aihue's minor league equivalent says he could hit .243/.390/.442 in the bigs.

Dutton was the original author of Sunday's Mark Teahen/Indians rumor, and he wrote today that sources from both clubs gave it to him.  Royals GM Dayton Moore says "somebody lied" along the way.

Type A/B Free Agents

Posted: 29 Oct 2008 12:04 PM PDT

Using Eddie Bajek's estimates on Detroit Tigers Thoughts, here's a list of the possible Type A and Type B free agents this winter.

Type A

Bobby Abreu (Yankees)
Milton Bradley (Rangers)
Doug Brocail (Astros)
A.J. Burnett (Blue Jays)
Pat Burrell (Phillies)
Orlando Cabrera (White Sox)
Juan Cruz (Diamondbacks)
Ryan Dempster (Cubs)
Adam Dunn (Diamondbacks)
Brian Fuentes (Rockies)
Brian Giles (Padres)
Orlando Hudson (Diamondbacks)
Raul Ibanez (Mariners)
Jason Isringhausen (Cardinals)
Derek Lowe (Dodgers)
Damaso Marte (Yankees)
Jamie Moyer (Phillies)
Mike Mussina (Yankees)
Darren Oliver (Angels)
Oliver Perez (Mets)
Andy Pettitte (Yankees)
Manny Ramirez (Dodgers)
Edgar Renteria (Tigers)
Francisco Rodriguez (Angels)
Ivan Rodriguez (Yankees)
C.C. Sabathia (Brewers)
Ben Sheets (Brewers)
Russ Springer (Cardinals)
Mark Teixeira (Angels)
Jason Varitek (Red Sox)
Kerry Wood (Cubs)

That's 31 Type As, though Giles and Marte may have their options picked up and Mussina may retire.

Type B

Jeremy Affeldt (Reds)
Moises Alou (Mets)
Garret Anderson (Angels)
Joe Beimel (Dodgers)
Casey Blake (Dodgers)
Paul Byrd (Red Sox)
Mike Cameron (Brewers)
Carlos Delgado (Mets)
Alan Embree (Athletics)
Eric Gagne (Brewers)
Jon Garland (Angels)
Luis Gonzalez (Marlins)
Ken Griffey Jr. (White Sox)
Mark Grudzielanek (Royals)
Trevor Hoffman (Padres)
Bob Howry (Cubs)
Jeff Kent (Dodgers)
Braden Looper (Cardinals)
Mark Loretta (Astros)
Brandon Lyon (Diamondbacks)
Greg Maddux (Dodgers)
Trever Miller (Rays)
Miguel Olivo (Royals)
Brad Penny (Dodgers)
Dennys Reyes (Twins)
Brian Shouse (Brewers)
John Smoltz (Braves)
Frank Thomas (Athletics)
Salomon Torres (Brewers)
Juan Uribe (White Sox)
Tim Wakefield (Red Sox)
David Weathers (Reds)
Randy Wolf (Astros)
Jamey Wright (Rangers)
Gregg Zaun (Blue Jays)

That's 35 Type Bs, though Cameron, Delgado, Embree, Miller, Olivo, Penny, Torres, and Wakefield could have their options picked up and Alou, Griffey, Kent, and Maddux could retire.

Talking to a few people in the game, it seems that the Type A/B free agent quota depends on the number of Type A/Bs who file.  If 62 or fewer such players file (which is possible) then each team will have a quota of three Type A or B signings.  Regardless of that, teams are allowed to sign as many Type A/Bs as they lose.  As far as I can tell, the quota has never been an issue in the past.

Yankees Rumors: Mussina, Giambi, Teixeira

Posted: 29 Oct 2008 08:33 AM PDT

George King of the New York Post has a handful of Yankees rumors this morning.

  • Mike Mussina's agent, Arn Tellem, will travel to his client's Pennsylvania home this week to talk about the pitcher's future.  The general vibe is that Moose will retire, but he may file for free agency after the World Series to keep his options open.  I imagine the Yankees would like to resolve this quickly.  Currently, GM Brian Cashman is not counting on Mussina.
  • Tellem told King that Jason Giambi would like to stay in New York if they'll have him.  While it may not be the ideal solution, 30 home run bats are rare and it's worth considering.
  • King says the Yankees "haven't been wild" so far about chasing Mark Teixeira.  Tex hasn't even filed for free agency yet, so there's still plenty of time to get wild.
  • The Yankees are counting on a healthy Jorge Posada behind the dish in '09.

Will Anderson Remain An Angel?

Posted: 29 Oct 2008 07:39 AM PDT

Yesterday, the Angels decided to buy out left fielder Garret Anderson's $14MM '09 option for $3MM.  Anderson's friends told the L.A. Times he prefers to stay in Anaheim, but the Angels may not have a spot for him.  Said GM Tony Reagins:

He still wants to play. He still thinks he can play a significant role, as far as getting 500 or 600 at-bats. We just need to determine whether we have that place for him.

The quote seems to imply that the Angels may not view Anderson as an everyday player anymore.  He hit .293/.325/.433 in 593 plate appearances this year, spending significant time at DH.  The Angels have more pressing concerns this winter, and they'll deal with those first.  Waiting around for the Halos could be a risky move for Anderson.

"Dead Weight" meaning they were impeding progress of those than will come from the farm and crippling the ability of the Reds to bring in outside help.  As long as either was being paid by the Reds we were seeing what we were going to get until the youngsters fully matured.  Now the healing can begin.  Given time Jocketty will work some magic.  I don't feel this team needs more than a minor tweak or two here and there to take the next step.  As bad as it looked at times last year 1 to 2 run producing players with RISP could have made the difference between winning and losing.  They're that close IMHO.  With both on the squad we were always going to be on the verge but always on the outside looking in.

two zingers, mj...lol...

first, griffey was the dead weight...dunn, well, he wasn't dimaggio,
but the lineup misses him still...

two...spring training won't be enough to make much of a grade...we'll
see some new things, players, etc...but we all know that the real
problem is getting the crew together and actually play baseball...and
that will take me at least until the all-star game to really start
evaluating...my final grade will come maybe mid-september...

i'll be fair too...i want to see, say 80 wins by that time, with a
chance to make it, say, 87 or so...see where that gets us...
