CINCINNATI — Scott Nethery had his title and responsibilities upgraded by the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. General Manager Wayne Krivsky named Nethery assistant general manager and senior director of professional scouting.
Nethery, a longtime friend and traveling companion when both were on the scouting trails, was hired by Krivsky on Feb. 12 as special assistant to the general manager/player personnel.
Nethery spent the 2005 season with the New York Mets, first as a special assignment and professional scout and then as a special assistant to GM Omar Minaya.
In 1986 and 1987, Nethery served as an assistant coach at Duke University, the school Krivsky attended.
Other Reds news
• Grant Balfour, who never threw a pitch for the Reds, was claimed off waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers. Balfour, an Australian, was signed to a major-league contract in January by former GM Dan O'Brien, now a special advisor in Milwaukee. Balfour was coming off rotator cuff and labrum surgery and was unable to pitch all year.
• Pitchers Sun-Woo Kim and Chris Michalak, plus outfielder Dewayne Wise, cleared waivers and were assigned to Class AAA Louisville.
• Catcher Dane Sardinha and pitcher Joe Mays have filed for free agency. Sardinha's departure ends a curious episode in Reds history. Shortstop David Espinosa and Sardinha were drafted 1-2 in the 2000 draft by former GM Jim Bowden, and both were signed to major-league contracts.
Espinosa was later traded to the Detroit Tigers and played at Class AAA Toledo this year.
Sardinha appeared in two games with the Reds, once each in 2003 and 2005.
• Pitcher Aaron Harang, a 16-game winner this year, became a father Tuesday when his wife, Jennifer, gave birth to Addison Kay Harang, a 7-pound, 7-ounce, 191/2-inch daughter.
Harang said his daughter's first name has nothing to do with the street behind the Wrigley Field bleachers in Chicago, where many of the home runs he's given up have landed.
