Most people went on to the All's Fare Cafe. Two trikers stayed at the tunnel to fix what turned out to be a case of snakebite ... twin punctures side by side, with no tire penetration.  Unfortunately, we couldn't remove the Bionx wheel without a specific wrench, so we couldn't use his spare tube. I patched the first hole before finding the second hole, but we decided the safest thing to do was call Steve Schwartz who we knew to be at home expecting to meet another REB rider.  Steve dashed out and SAG'd the trike and rider back to his place.  Great service, that.

A car stopped and the driver told us that Alan Jensen and the few remaining REB folk were climbing the hill back towards the starting point, so I rode out to the Red Oak Victory, because I always do. They were in the midst of a very successful breakfast fundraiser for the old tub, so while I paid the donation to get aboard, I decided that I didn't want to stand in line behind 25 or 30 others for a mess of scrambled eggs, pancakes and bacon.  I gave myself a brief topside tour and rode back to my car.

Which puts me in mind to assume that there may be a line of people for us to stand behind at the Bay Trail segment dedication in July.  I think we might want to get there as early as we can.  Perhaps fewer people will show up for a trail segment and old WWII factory building, and more expensive grub.  Who knows.

I and the tandem and final trike did go to All's Fare. The Trike turned back to find you and the snakebite case...Maybe you had already left for Red Oak. that left me and the tandem with Dan? anf Molly. to have a spot of tea and cookie before also backtracking to find out how you and the flat tire were doing. We went through the tunnel and back through Marina Bay where I peel off.So let's talk up a large group of recumbents for the July 5th event. Again, meet at the "Usual Place" (Central and Rydin) and be prepared to leave for the Ford Bldg. promptly at 9 am.

Can someone email the Sacto club and invite them down? Then a few of us suggested we  meet the Sacto club on their 1`st of August ride..

Al Zeno, can you explain where you went after your pee break? to miss all of us? anyway, glad you made it back safely. You get the prize for most mileage again this month.

I enjoyed the ride and look forward to meeting new folks and the camaraderie. Getting the flat was a drag but I learned a lot about what I need to carry that I didn't have, lol and some other very useful tips that I am sure will help me in the future. Richard thank you so much for all your help. I really appreciate it!

One of our policies on an REB ride is to never leave a fallen comrade behind. I guess it was my turn to offer assistance this time, seeing as how I wanted to see your trike up close and ask about your Bionx experience. Back when I rode a road bike, I never rode very far from home because of the discomfort, and I could always call home for a lift, or walk home if my bike stopped carrying me.  It never did break down though, and all flats were discovered at home the next day.

Now that my rides are twice as long as before, and I can no longer call home for a ride, my policy is to be very well-equipped to deal with a breakdown while on a ride.  I'm sure glad I decided to start patching rather than swapping tubes, and carry a patch kit now.  However, I had never seen a snakebite or pinch flat before.  I suspect that a more knowledgeable rider would have looked for two holes immediately, and gotten you under way faster.
Thinking back on it, can you remember where you smacked your back rim hard?  Was it a railroad track, or curb?  I' suspect you had been riding on a flat longer than you think, because I can't think what you might have hit before entering the tunnel.  Unless your rear wheel fell off that little asphalt ramp just before the tunnel. The railroad tracks are the worst on our rides, unless you're pumped up firm.  I do notice a lot of debris, like nuts and bolts, on Cutting Blvd, but that should only account for one hole, not a pair.  Your 1.5" Marathon Racer is a good rear tire as long as it's kept above 70 lbs., preferably 85 psi. for best speed.

Thanks for coming so far to ride with us.  Hope to see you again somewhere. Are Fremont and Union City closer for you?  We love doing the Alameda Creek Trail down there, and that's 27 flat round-trip miles.

REB riders (and all bicyclists),

Here is your official invite and information on the July 5
festivities here on the Bay Trail for the ribbon cutting and
restaurant opening.
I hope to see many of you at our usual meeting place (Central Ave and
Rydin Road) for a leisurely 2.5 mile ride to the Ford Bldg. We can be
part of the Bay Trail Ribbon Cutting ceremony and then have Brunch at
the new Boiler House restaurant and then those who wish, may want to
continue a ride on into Point Richmond to enjoy the scenic ride there
around to Brickyard Cove and environs.

Sincerely,

Allan Jensen

I'm going, but what to wear to a ribbon-cutting ceremony with dignitaries when you're the constituency?  If you haven't registered your bike or trike this year, law enforcement will be on-hand to help you with that "requirement". I may have to get myself registered.

I'm curious to see whether the valet bike parking is required or not.  I might want to keep my comfortable seat for the ceremony, although the view from a trike may be obstructed.

Afterwards, I'd like to ride out to the Red Oak Victory and try to buy my way aboard. They take $5 donations, but aren't always open for visitors.  The view from the deck and superstructure are great.

Richard,
Since when do we have to "register" our bikes and under whose authority is this required? I have never been required to register my bike. Registration usually requires a fee and if that's the case I'll steer clear of this event.

You can look up The National Bike Registry online and register your bike there
if you want to. I guess they'll be at the ride to do it onsite, also. If your
bike is stolen here, and the Seattle police happen to come upon it, say in
November, they will probably not come across the fact that it's stolen if you
reported it to your local police. The National Bike Registry is a "one stop"
registry where any law enforcement agency, or even a bike shop or individual,
can find out if a bike is stolen, and who the owner is. It's basically a
national database of your bikes. Yes, there is a fee.

Good riding

Sorry you won't be there AZ.  Last I heard, each community has the right to require bicycle registration to help the police find the owner when they recover a stolen bike.  I think the fee is a couple of bucks. Mine aren't registered, but if Richmond Police are registering locally, I'll happily register my trike to support my local police.  I wasn't referring to the National Registry which is another registration altogether.  There is no penalty for not being registered.  I don't even know if Richmond bothers to register bikes locally. Berkeley does, but Berkeley does everything.

Richard, Really?
The Richmond police are going to force us to register our bikes? That sounds absurd! Alameda has bike registration but there is no forced requirement or enforcement of it. What happens if I refuse to register my bike anyway? I'm not a Richmond resident. Where did this registration info come from?

I've been a Richmond resident for 22 years, and I've never heard of any Richmond bike registration.

I wouldn't give it a second thought--I'm sure any registration is completely voluntary, and will have nothing to do with Richmond.

Ride free in Richmond!

Like Paul said.  I didn't say anyone was forcing anyone to do anything.  I don't know how you came to that conclusion. But if you don't want to be seen by the Richmond police, don't come on the ride because they will be there. Just read AJ's attachment.

Each local government has the right to regulate the registration of bicycles by their own residents, with some restrictions.  They might find out it's not worth the trouble:

http://www.bicyclelaw.com/blog/index.cfm/2008/12/31/The-LA-Bicycle-License-Controversy

The details of what they can and can't do are listed here:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/tocd16_7.htm

For example, CVC 39004 lists the fees, ranging from $2 to $4.  Under 39011, the maximum fine is $10.

Under 39002, if licenses are made mandatory, it's only for the residents, not for cyclists passing through.  So if you're not a Richmond resident, it's moot.

In theory, the point of all this is to recover stolen bikes.

Great information, Michael, and a fun read.  Finding out whether Richmond registers bicycles required real patience, because neither the Police nor Fire Depts. do it, and bike shops haven't a clue.  Richmond has no requirement for bike registration, BUT the Police Activities League (PAL) will provide a registration form at their MacDonald Ave. office, and take a picture (or you bring a picture) and register your bike with the Richmond Police Dept. for $10 for the life of your ownership of the bike. PAL will not be at the ribbon-cutting ceremony to take registrations.

Local bike shops have not received advanced notice of the ribbon-cutting ceremony this Sunday.  I guess they only want bike trail users to know about it.

The City of Alameda advised me to go to the Fire Station at Park and Encinal if I wanted to register my Alameda bike.  They still do things the old fashioned way in Alameda apparently.  Berkeley seems to be the only local city that encourages citizens to register their bike.

GEEZ LOUISE!!!!  If I had known I was going to start a revolution, I wouldn't have had to supply the ammunition!!!  HOLY SMOKE people!!! Take a step back and breathe deeply 10 times...
Not sure how anyone got the idea that bike registration was going to be "required". I don't think any one is going to require you to register your bike. So like friend Zeno counsels, come on the ride!!
I know recumbent riders are "different", but I always thought it was in a good way. The little bit of spit and vinegar I sensed in the communiques here lately bothered me a bit, only in the sense that there might be a small schism amongst us recumbent riders. Hell, we've got enough folks in the biking community out there who think we are all weird, no sense aggravating each other...
I have only been the advocate (messenger) for this event, not the orgainizer of all the particulars (like National Bike Registration). I thought it would be great if a whole bunch of us recumbent riders could offer a show of support for the ribbon cutting marking the opening of a new section of the Bay Trail; and the opening of a nice food stop along our "usual route". I did not expect that the call to mount up would quickly morph into a very specific side issue about "forced" bike registration. Hell, if I thought someone was going to force any of our REB's to register their bike, I would be the first one standing up to so "it aint going to happen..." Not in my town (Richmond), not in my county, not on my watch...etc. etc.
You see how these things can multiply...?
OK, enough of my soap box. Get on your bike and be there Sunday...or stay home and watch wimbelton tennis or Michael Jackson re-runs...
Just my opinion....

Well, now that we know that the site doesn't copy and paste Chinese, I'll have
to do it in English.

I'll be there.

Hey gramps, it sounds like you need to take another nap and then read the links Michael G. provided. In one you'll read that a hapless biker in LA got fined $160 for not having his bike registered. And the Bicycle Council has their lawyers working to overturn the fine.  In this time of unfathomable city budget deficits, it's not unreasonable to want to find out what the legal situation is, in case one of our cities is looking for a handy cash cow.  And the situation is that no one in our immediate area need worry about being unregistered.  Not sure about Berkeley riders though.

Richmond Police will be at the Bay Trail event Sunday if someone does want to register with the National Bike Registry. For a while there it sounded like AZ might be in the witness protection program, but that was a misread.

Hey gramps, it sounds like you need to take another nap and then read the links Michael G. provided.
**I WAS taking a nap:-). So when I woke up to my "you've got mail" song I hopped up to see who was sending me an email (I get so few:-))). And I see this barrage of commentary on "don't go to Richmond on a bike without a license" or words to that effect. Ha! no wonder my BVD's got in a twist!!
In one you'll read that a hapless biker in LA got fined $160 for not having his bike registered. And the Bicycle Council has their lawyers working to overturn the fine.
**Not unlike my recent bust for "peddling without a license - that is, selling my extra Cal football ticket on the street. I demanded a court appearance and went. Long story short the $168 dollar fine was waived by the citing agency (UC PD). Get me to tell you the whole sad saga one day--you buy the beer.
In this time of unfathomable city budget deficits, it's not unreasonable to want to find out what the legal situation is, in case one of our cities is looking for a handy cash cow.  And the situation is that no one in our immediate area need worry about being unregistered.  Not sure about Berkeley riders though.
**I have a Berkeley license (which I assume would be honored by any municipality??)

Richmond Police will be at the Bay Trail event Sunday if someone does want to register with the National Bike Registry.

**Richmond Police will be doing the registrations for the National Bike Registry?? In any case, how could it hurt?

For a while there it sounded like AZ might be in the witness protection program, but that was a misread.

**Well, I hope we have 30 bents out there Sunday, Just no bent out of shape riders...

The Fremont Freewheelers have a ride tomorrow morning that is about 15 miles at
a touring pace(10-13 mph). It starts next to a fire station in Newark that has a
pancake breakfast tomorrow to raise money for charity. I do not know how much
the pancake breakfast costs.
The start time is 7:30 AM in the parking lot of the Silliman Recreation Center
in Newark, 6800 Mowry Ave. To get there you come down I-880 to the Mowry exit.
Take that and go to the right at the light. Go to Cherry St and go through that
light. There will be a fire station on the left side with a recreation center
parking lot just past that. Turn into that parking lot and look for bicyclists.
Guests are welcome on our rides. This ride is on city streets out to Coyote
Hills and back.

Don't forget Sunday's ride, July 5th on the Bay Trail from our normal starting
point at our normal starting time.

Good riding

Dave Ransom
