Hi everyone-
Thanks for hanging with me on this stuff. The Mines race has been
chosen by you all as our race weekend for September 15-16.
Now, I'd like your input for the weekend of October 6-7. Bear in mind
that there is a gravity-only race at Angel Fire that weekend, which we
could use as a gravity event as well.
There are three choices: Mesa, CU and UU/USU. Please let me know what
your team would prefer by the end of the day on Friday. Here are
their race request forms:
Mesa:
4.) Disciplines included in race (i.e. XC, DH, RR, Crit): XC, XCST,
Super D (possibly)
5.) Location(s) for race: Grand Junction Colorado. The XC and Super
D will be on the Tabuache Trail, the XCST will be in the desert north
of town.
6.) Preferred weekend for race: September 9th (We would like to be
the first race of the season) This has traditionally gone to schools
that might get snow – so we can give it up if that is the case, but if
not we'd like it.
8.) Why would your race be a worthwhile addition to the schedule? Our
course is one of the most technical of the season, giving riders a
wide variety of challenging single track and worthwhile climbs. We
have received positive feedback from most riders on our race for the
past four years.
9.) Do you have any additional activities planned beyond the actual
races (i.e. banquet, social, movie, gear swap). We will have a
Saturday night movie and gear swap / raffle at Mesa State College.
We'd also be willing to put on a Sadie Hawkins formal dance if that
would help!
10.) Do you, or any of your teammates/coaches/advisers, have
experience hosting a race? We have hosted this race for the past four
years. It has been a successful event each year. This year we hope to
improve upon our race by adding a Super D course.
CU:
4.) Disciplines included in race (i.e. XC, DH, RR, Crit): XC, Short
Track, DH (Super D)
5.) Location(s) for race: Golden Gate State Park, Golden, CO
6.) Preferred weekend for race: September 16th and 17th, the later the
date the more risk of adverse weather conditions as our venue is at
9,000 feet.
8.) Why would your race be a worthwhile addition to the schedule?
The cross country courses allow us to have an advanced course for more
experienced racers and a beginner course for new riders. The Super D
course is challenging for downhillers and also safe enough for
cross country riders thus providing more racing opportunities
Last year we provided free and subsidized camping for all participants
and the race is centrally located in the middle of the state and close
to the Front Range. Our events are well organized and an ambulance is
always on site in case of emergencies.
9.) Do you have any additional activities planned beyond the actual
races (i.e. banquet, social, movie, gear swap).
We intend to sponsor a social around the camp fire.
10.) Do you, or any of your teammates/coaches/advisers, have
experience hosting a race?
Yes, over 100 races promoted since 1999.
USU/UU
4.) Disciplines included in race (i.e. XC, DH, RR, Crit):
Mountain Cross Country (XC), Mountain Short Track (ST), …
5.) Possible Location(s) for race:
XC – Green Canyon, Logan, Utah
XC – Sherwood Hills, south of Logan about 15 miles
ST – Logan area Logan is in the northernmost part of Utah
6.) Preferred weekend for race: Any
8.) Why would your race be a worthwhile addition to the schedule?
The Green Canyon course was used in the past for MTB races. The
Sherwood Hills course is used in the Intermountain Cup – for more details:

9.) Do you have any additional activities planned beyond the actual
races (i.e. banquet, social, movie, gear swap).
Could easily do a social, dance, or movie. Also, most likely could
provide adequate host housing.
10.) Do you, or any of your teammates/coaches/advisers, have
experience hosting a race?
Our coach organized the Green Canyon race, so we would utilize his
knowledge and experience. We have relationships with those who do the
Sherwood Hills race too, so we could easily have their assistance too.
11.) Would you be interested in co-hosting the weekend with a nearby
school?
Yes – the University of Utah, provided they are interested still.
They could most likely provide a much better venue for a downhill
course, such as Park City or some huge ski resort already set up for
summertime biking. Idaho State University (ISU) or Weber State
University (WSU) might also be interested in co-hosting. ISU is 1.5
hours north of Logan and WSU is 45 minutes south. U of U is 1.5 hours
south of Logan.
Thanks for your help,
Spencer
