Competition Opportunities Survey
To: Members of USATF Potomac Valley Track and Field and Road Running Community

From: George Harris, President

Subject: Competition Opportunities

USATF Potomac Valley is considering creating new competition opportunities for its members and would like to offer you the opportunity to provide input.

Our proposal is to have:
  • Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field meets for adult members in different parts of the Association every weekend during the Indoor and Outdoor season lasting through the end of the summer
  • Cross Country Meets for adult members in different parts of the area every weekend during the Fall, Spring and Summer.

Needless to say, this will only be done if there is sufficient interest.  If you are interested in being a part of this (either competing or helping out) please complete and return the questionnaire found at the bottom of this email to Tim Baker, tbaker03@...

Entries for the meet would be online and the following would apply:
  • We need to be able to cover the expenses of the event and hope to develop a fund which will be used to stimulate the sport, e.g. free membership to those unable to pay (decided on a case by case basis), paying the way for those with qualifying standards to National Championships, compensation for Officials' expenses, etc.
  • A regular fee will be charged for those entering up to a week before.
  • A significantly increased fee will be charged for those entering up to the day before.
  • An exorbitant fee will be charged for those wishing to enter the last day up to an hour before - we hope not to make too much money with this.
We plan to publish the results of each meet online.  In addition, we will try to get the results of those who compete and tell us the email address of the papers that want to be listed in to that paper within the week.

If you have any questions of ideas, please contact Tim Baker at tbaker03@....

Runners,

If you want a FAST 5k time, I recommend doing the Rite Aid 5k on Sunday,
Aug 16th.

Jeff Damiano, Nelly Budrow and I calibrated the course on July 30th
using the USATF calibration procedures. Using 2 bikes equipped with
the required Jones Counters, we were only 6 ft apart at the end of the
5k. It's as accurately measured as any 5k course in the area.

Brad

P.S. If you're not running, we can still use a couple more helpers with
the Finish Line.

I recently saw a great movie about running and I thought I'd pass the good word
along.

Please visit http://www.runningthesahara.com/

This is a documentary about 3 men who ran across the Sahara desert in Africa.
It took them 111 days and they covered about 50 miles per day on average (that's
2 marathons per day). They never took a day off, and temperatures reached 140 F
at times. Their total mileage was more than 4,300 miles, which is almost from
here to California and back – without a break.

Also take note of http://www.h20africa.org/ which is the website for the charity
that these men started after completing this run. It focuses on bringing clean
drinking water to remote, arid regions of Africa.

Trust me when I tell you that your long runs will never be quite the same after
you've watched this film.

Enjoy

Aqua jogging is a great substitute. It might be the best substitute actually...
besides not getting used to the pounding. If you are a bouyant body (like I
am), and you keep your turnover high, you might be able to get used to not
having a belt. When I had IT & patella tendon issues, aqua jogging helped me--
but I wasn't training for a marathon... There might be limits to how far you
can effectively train using aqua jogging.

Good luck!

Zach

Hi everyone,
My wife Erin and I just joined RASAC this year. We went to one meeting, then
both of us got injuries and we're finally recovered, so we'll be joining you for
some runs soon.
During my injury downtime, I started a blog (www.NoMeatAthlete.com), all about
being an endurance athlete and eating a pescetarian diet (vegetarian, plus some
fish). I'm also really into cooking, so I post lots of fun and easy recipes
that are really good! So even if you're not vegetarian, you still might find
something good to mix it up with.
Thanks for your time, and I would really appreciate any feedback you can give
me about the blog!

2009 University of Maryland Heart Center Baltimore 10-Miler Date Set
for June 20th

Baltimore, MD - Corrigan Sports Enterprises (CSE) announced today the
University of Maryland Heart Center will again be the title sponsor
of the second annual Baltimore 10-Miler. Race day is set for
Saturday, June 20th at 7:30 a.m. at Druid Hill Park near the Maryland
Zoo.

"Get on your running shoes! We are proud to once again sponsor the
Baltimore 10-Miler. Last year's event was a huge success. This is a
great way for us to reach out to the community while promoting the
importance of exercise for heart health," said Alison Brown, Senior
Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at the
University of Maryland Medical Center.

The course will be similar to last year's which ran along two of
Baltimore's lakeside parks, Druid Hill Park and Lake Montebello.

"Baltimore area runners really wanted and needed a race of this
distance. We limited to the race to 2,000 people and were able to
sell out in 30 days. This year we are allowing the event to grow to
3,000 runners and we expect a sell out again. Ten miles seems to be
the perfect distance for this time of year" comments Lee Corrigan,
event organizer.

The event will feature some of the best post race amenities including
cold wash clothes, watermelon slices, complimentary beer for runners,
and a post race celebration with live music taking place at the Zoo.
Registration will cost $50 and will open on February 20, 2009.

To sign up visit www.baltimore10miler.com

Proceeds from the event will benefit the University of Maryland Heart
Center, the Baltimore Police Foundation and the Maryland Zoo.
