Morning Fellow Shooters,

I own a small design firm in NC. We normally design products for other
companies. A few months ago we decided to create our own products. Since we have
several shooters (including me) at the office we thought that a product for the
firearms industry would fun! Here is the press release for our new shooting
rest. If you get a chance check it out on our website and let me know what you
think.

Cheers,

New Portable Shooting Rest Released by Montie Design

(Morrisville, N.C.) Collaborative product design and development firm Montie
Design announces the availability of its unique portable shooting rest, the
second original product conceived, designed, and distributed by the RTP-based
company in the last nine months.

Designed to meet the needs of the majority of shooters, and most firearms, the
easy-to-carry rest weighs less than two pounds and disassembles easily in three
pieces, fitting neatly into a small carrying pouch. Unlike conventional bench
rests, which are heavy and complex, the novel Montie Design model -- made of
sturdy yet lightweight aluminum -- provides steady support for different sized
firearms ranging from semi-automatic and bolt action rifles to shotguns,
carbines and pistols from a prone position or bench rest.

"There's nothing like this on the market," said Montie Roland, president of
Montie Design and active shooting enthusiast. Roland, who used to shoot
competitively and has a daughter on a local junior rifle team, said he got the
idea for the product after tiring of carrying around a conventional combination
of a heavy rest and sand bags for recreational shooting.

"I realized that a lighter weight version would serve the recreational shooter
better,"
he said.

Karl Frank, business development manager at Montie Design, received positive
feedback on the portable shooting rest at the recent Special Operations trade
show in Fayetteville, N.C. "The X-Rest also has military or police applications.
It is useful in training environments, sniper deployment and for sighting in and
maintenance operations," Frank, whose background includes experience developing
fire arms and tactical equipment for military applications.

Roland said the idea for the product came not only from personal experience but
also from what he saw as the market prospects for such a product. Nationally,
approximately 200 companies are actively involved in the U.S. firearms industry,
combining for an annual revenue of $2 billion. In the Triangle region of North
Carolina there are more than five shooting ranges and multiple firearms
retailers, not to mention major chains selling guns and ammo to hunters and
competitive shooters.

The design and distribution of the shooting rest comes on the heels of Montie
Design's innovative radio frequency identification (RFID) detector card which
was released in January and is now being sold throughout the U.S. and seven
foreign countries.

"Sometimes there is no better way for a design firm to find the next client than
to show off a simple, well-designed product to a potential client and say, `we
did this in our spare time, imagine what we could do for your product line,'"
Roland said, adding that concrete examples like the RFID detector and portable
shooting rest show initiative, leadership and capability to his clients.

Both the RFID detector and the shooting rest are produced in the Research
Triangle Park region of North Carolina, using local manufacturers.

"The Triangle is full of ideas for great products and many innovative, quality
firms with talented professionals who can produce, market, and distribute those
products throughout the world," Roland said. ADR Hydrocut, a veteran owned,
Morrisville company that waterjets the parts for the portable shooting rest was
instrumental in the development of the product.

According to Frank, ADR Hydrocut provided prototypes and extremely valuable
input. "Having the manufacturer literally just down the street made the
development process much easier and convenient. We call this approach `Made
Right Here,'" he said.

Future plans for the portable shooting rest include releasing drawings and
design specs as open source in addition to designing an adjustable,
pistol-oriented version of the product.

I have a Winchester Low Wall chambered for 32 Long with a few barrel
pits and would like it converted to a center fire cartridge.

My interest is not in holding this gun for appreciation nor for hunting
small game but rather just plinking.

I would like to have the current barrel relined and chambered for a
currently available, [i.e., read cheaper] cartridge such as a 32 H&R
Magnum, 32-20 Winchester or similar cartridge.

Conversion of a rimfire barrel to a centerfire barrel is problematic and
may be prohibitive in cost.

It will require some degree of Hammer/Firing pin modification to insure
ignition.

I won't know until I can locate someone, with references, who can
do the job and will give me a cost estimate.

Can a member of this group suggest such a person and give that gunsmith
who would be so interested an opportunity to send me an email to discuss
the nature of this project?

I find myself in need of replacment magazines for my Colt 9mm Ar 15, I
got 3 Magazines from another maker last year and the quality is less
than outstanding. They fit poorly and feed even less than poorly.
Colt magazines have gone out of sight on price. The C Products 32 rd
magazines are priced right. Does anyone else on this list have
experance with the C Products 9mm magazines.

Thank-you for your replys

With all the panic buying going on these days, I had not planned to
participate until a brand new AR lower fell into my lap for slightly
over $100. I had an extra lower build out kit, so I assembled it,
using the excellent CAA 6-position collapsible stock.

Now, the question is, what style of carbine upper? The way I see it,
my options are

1. An M4gery upper from akpartskits.com. It has a 16 inch barrel with
1:9 twist on an LMT A2 style upper. $330 and no bolt assembly or
charging handle.

2. An A3 upper from akpartskits.com. It has a 16 inch barrel with no
grenade launcher cut on an LMT flattop style upper and 1:9 twist with
an A2 style front sight. $290 and no bolt assembly or charging handle.

3. CMMG M18M SPR Upper. It has an 18 inch heavy barrel with a rifle
length gas system, 1:8 twist, and is a "dissipator" configuration with
a rifle length sight radius. It comes with a flattop upper, but can be
uipgraded to an A2 upper for $25. It also comes with the bolt assembly
and charging handle. Total is $625.

The CMMG is my favorite option, but I wonder if the carbine will be
very front-heavy with the barrel that is 0.875 inches behind the gas
block. I like the idea of the extra 2 inches for velocity sake, and
the heavy barrel for heat dissipation and stiffness. OTOH, the other
two options will be a lot lighter.

The other issue is that I know that CMMG is quality. I have lots of
friends that have CMMG uppers and guns, and all are very satisfied. I
don't know a lot about akpartskits.com, except that they use LMT
forged uppers, and barrels from Wilson and Mossberg. They are run by
a company called Blackthorn, which is, IIRC, a subsidiary of Hesse.
My one experience with a Hesse product (stainless FAL receiver) has
been wonderful, but, I have read of a host of problems that other
people have had.

If it makes any difference, my other AR is a Bushmaster, and I would
expect at least the same performance from this carbine as I would for
my Bushy.

So, what do you guys think?

..Phil

the tricky part is the extractor...if the case head is smaller than the size of
8mm it will not extract unless you do what george did and handpick a bolt that
works best

Some outfit in idaho also makes chamber inserts to convert 8mm to other
calibers.  They made 30-06 to .308 chamber inserts for navy M-1's

I was wondering whether anyone on the list had experience of fitting
better sights to one of these lever guns?

I did buy a Marbles rear sight but didn't fit it because I hadn't
measured the dovetail size! I'm now thinking about trying to fit
the 'Rossi 92'Marbles tang sight but not sure how well this would work.

I don't have a problem with people posting a brief invitation on this
group to join another Yahoo gun-related group.
